It seems to manage this every vintage and is just such a brilliant drinking wine. 2018 is another excellent year here, with deep fruitfulness of brambled hedgerow alongside liquorice and woodsmoke. It has a polyphenol index of 84IPT, so this is full of tannins but they don't feel overpowering.     Château Le Gay beobachten wir bereits seit Jahren. In 2015 jetzt der Durchbruch - dem Team ist ein Blogbuster gelungen, der in seiner Preisklasse seines Gleichen sucht! Im Bukett eine sehr schöne Fruchtsüße, am Gaumen Blaubeere, ganz fein anklingende Cassis-Note (unglaublich interessant), Kaffee und schwarze Schokolade! Der Wein hält sich aufgrund einer betörenden Frische und Mineralität wunderbar lang am Gaumen. Chapeau! (95-96 Punkte) Wine Advocate: 94-96/100 Punkte  The 2015 Le Gay comes from the 6.5-hectare Pomerol estate, of which 2.09 hectares are currently being restructured. It is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc picked from 27 September until 8 October at one degree lower alcohol than Montviel; it has a fragrant bouquet with delineated red cherries, crushed strawberry and hints of vanilla from the 100% new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, ripe and rounded in the mouth, very well balanced and very smooth. This just glides across the mouth and once that new oak has been absorbed, this will be a gorgeous Le Gay to behold. Do not overlook this Cru because it has been on a roll in recent years.  Trinkgenuss: 2020 bis 2050   Weinwisser (Rene Gabriel): 18/20 Punkte 90 % Merlot, 10 % Cabernet Franc. Dunkles Granat, recht satt in der Mitte, rubiner Rand. Das Bouquet zeigt eine tolle, sehr fruchtreife Süsse, rotes Pflaumenmus, Früchtetee und feine Kräuternoten. Im Gaumen dunkelmalzig, fast nur schwarze Beeren, Mokka und schwarze Pralinen, im Finale Heidelbeeren ä gogo. Glücklicherweise habe ich ihn im Saal vom Syndicat in Pomerol nochmals nach verkostet. Das Muster gefiel mir um Längen besser als jenes auf dem Chäteau. Trinkgenuss: 2024 bis 2042  James Suckling: 95-96/100 Punkte  "A tight and racy red with walnut skin, pecan nuts, chili and spice. Blackberry. Full body, round texture. Chewy. Very promising. Like the great Le Gays from the 1980s."

There's no question that here is a firm, structured, complex and concentrated wine with an effortless St-Julien signature, but the tannins are a touch more foursquare on the finish, not quite as supple and full of life as in 2016.
