In 1834, a German immigrant to Texas, D. T. F. (Detlef Thomas Friedrich) Jordt, aka Detlef Dunt, published Reise nach Texas, a delightful little book that praised Texas as "a land which puts riches in [the immigrant's] lap, which can bring happiness to thousands and to their descendants." Dunt's volume was the first one written by an on-the-ground observer to encourage German immigration to Texas, and it provides an unparalleled portrait of Austin's Colony from the lower Brazos region and San Felipe to the Industry and Frelsburg areas, where Dunt resided with Friedrich Ernst and his family. Journey to Texas, 1833 offers the first English translation of Reise nach Texas. It brings to vivid life the personalities, scenic landscapes, and customs that Dunt encountered in colonial Texas on the eve of revolution, along with his many practical suggestions for Germans who intended to emigrate. The editors' introduction describes the social, political, and economic conditions that prompted Europeans to emigrate to Texas and provides biographical background on Dunt and his connection with Friedrich Ernst. Expanding our knowledge of German immigration to Texas beyond the more fully documented Hill Country communities, Journey to Texas, 1833 also adds an important chapter to the story of pre-Revolutionary Texas by a sophisticated commentator. ungekürzt. Bebette started coming around when Lily Fiore was already too old to indulge in imaginary friendships. First, she showed up only sporadically, and then she became Lily's sole companion.Lily was almost nine when she discovered she had a very serious blood disease. It upended her life and caused her mother and father to move the family from Reverie to Salvation, NY, where Salvation Children's Hospital resided. Three years of treatments hadn't yet cured her, and she was twelve now. Her friends from Reverie never came to visit, and she was too sick to go to school in her new town. Since discovering she was sick, Lily even stopped being able to fly in her dreams. With her young imaginary friend Bebette's help, Lily embarked on a journey to find herself, even if only in the recesses of her own soul. This novel is existential, accessible, sad, joyous, whimsical, and reflective, all at once. It explores the journey of life, how we should tread, and where we should go.They say that every journey begins with a single step, but that first step must begin with a question: How will you face the un-mapped roads when you find them? What is your philosophy of life? ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Kathleen Li. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/134821/bk_acx0_134821_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.

This is a complete novel, no cliffhangers. Dylan had finally come of age. He was now a fully fledged member of the bear clan that resided on a secluded island in the middle of the Pacific. Now the first thing he had to do was choose a mate. But with no women to choose from on the island, the bears had no choice but to send for a mail-order bride, and Dylan picked the curvaceous Sarah. When Sarah arrived on the island, she had no idea what to expect. She knew she was going to be married to someone, but she had no idea just who - or what - he might be. Would she like him? Would he like her? Would she be able to please him the way he wanted? There was only one thing that was guaranteed for certain. When bear meets bride, sparks are certain to fly; and in this case, the sparks flew in more ways than one.... This is a bear shifter romance with elements of fun, love, romance, and sex along with adventure and excitement - the perfect mixture for the perfect escape! Warning: As with all Amy Star books, this one includes lots of sex and scenes of an adult nature. Only listen if 18+. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Pam Tierney. An acclaimed journalist seeks to understand the mysterious allure of peacocks—and in the process discovers unexpected and valuable life lessons. 2022 Carnegie Medal for Excellence Longlist Selection When Sean Flynn's neighbor in North Carolina texted "Any chance you guys want a peacock? No kidding!" he stared bewilderedly at his phone. He had never considered whether he wanted a peacock. But as an award-winning magazine writer, this kind of mystery intrigued him. So he, his wife, and their two young sons became the owners of not one but three charming yet fickle birds: Carl, Ethel, and Mr. Pickle. In Why Peacocks?, Flynn chronicles his hilarious and heartwarming first year as a peacock owner, from struggling to build a pen to assisting the local bird doctor in surgery to triumphantly watching a peahen lay her first egg. He also examines the history of peacocks, from their appearance in the Garden of Eden to their befuddling Charles Darwin to their bewitching the likes of Flannery O'Connor and Martha Stewart. And fueled by a reporter's curiosity, he travels across the globe to learn more about the birds firsthand, with stops including a Scottish castle where peacocks have resided for centuries, a southern California community tormented by a serial killer of peacocks, and a Kansas City airport hotel hosting an annual gathering of true peafowl aficionados. At turns comically absurd and deeply poignant, Why Peacocks? blends lively, insightful memoir and illuminating science journalism to answer the title's question. More than that, it offers surprising lessons about love, grief, fatherhood, and family.

From Emma Newman, the award-nominated author of Between Two Thorns, comes a novel of how one secret withheld to protect humanity's future might be its undoing.... Renata Ghali believed in Lee Suh-Mi's vision of a world far beyond Earth, calling to humanity. A planet promising to reveal the truth about our place in the cosmos, untainted by overpopulation, pollution and war. Ren believed in that vision enough to give up everything to follow Suh-Mi into the unknown. More than 22 years have passed since Ren and the rest of the faithful braved the starry abyss and established a colony at the base of an enigmatic alien structure where Suh-Mi has since resided alone. All that time Ren has worked hard as the colony's 3-D printer engineer, creating the tools necessary for human survival in an alien environment and harbouring a devastating secret. Ren continues to perpetuate the lie forming the foundation of the colony for the good of her fellow colonists, despite the personal cost. Then a stranger appears, far too young to have been part of the first planetfall, a man who bears a remarkable resemblance to Suh-Mi. The truth Ren has concealed since planetfall can no longer be hidden. And its revelation might tear the colony apart.... Read by Emma Newman. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Emma Newman. Noir Rose, a horror and thriller author, always believed that the fictional monsters that she wrote about were just that - fictional. The true horror of the hideous beasts resided only within the gruesome tales she wrote. Men cloaked in secrets and hidden behind white masks, earning them their chilling nickname "the Faceless".Noir should’ve ran while she had the chance, but the Faceless have set their sights on her. Now that they’ve found her, they’ll never let her go. They’ve waited an eternity for her, intent on using her to save themselves from the dark fate of their cursed immortal lives. Can Noir find a way to stop her fate being tied to their own? Or, will she succumb to their dark desires and break through their black hearts, lifting the curse forever? One thing’s for sure - she won’t come out of this the same person.Because, sometimes, there’s beauty in the beasts within. Note: This is a dark, reverse harem, stand-alone with explicit scenes, light BDSM, violence, and possible triggers. ungekürzt. In 2018 Britain will celebrate the centenary of women getting the vote; during the intervening 10 decades the lives of women in this country have been transformed. Told in their own voices, The Century Girls celebrates seven centenarians who lived that change: what they saw, how they were treated, who they loved, what they did and where they are now. With stories that are intimately knitted into the history of these islands, The Century Girls is a time-travel adventure featuring society’s oldest, most precious national treasures.   In 1918 the Suffragettes famously blazed the trail for women. This book reveals what came next for girls growing up in 20th century Great Britain, whether they resided in Scotland, England, Wales or Northern Ireland; whether they were housewives or in the workplace; and describing their surroundings of the city, the countryside, or coming to the British Isles from the one of the Commonwealth countries. The narrative will travel through the experiences of some key figures who are now themselves well over a hundred years old. It will tell the human story of how women gradually began to build independent lives for themselves in the modern world of post-Great War Britain, by retelling what their actual day-to-day reality was like through the decades. ungekürzt. A Horse Fiction Book for Adults Racism can linger in the strangest of places. Sometimes, even within yourself. For Clara Lacroix, the past was the place she chose to dwell. That's where her memories of Boone, and the life they shared, resided. But for Joe Black Hawk, the past was a painful mix of a fading heritage he didn't want to lose, and a string of mistakes he'd just as soon forget. Spanning thousands of acres across the Sandhills of Nebraska, Crossroads Ranch operates as a mustang training facility and equine-assisted psychotherapy practice. Here, in the beautifully rugged grasslands over which the Lakota Sioux once roamed freely, the lives of fifth-generation rancher, Clara LaCroix, and fifth-generation reservation Indian, Joe Black Hawk, collide in a tragic event that fuels an eruption of racial bitterness. As each struggle to cope with their own personal loss, both must learn to navigate the present with tolerance and, ultimately, forgiveness in order to reconcile with the past and one another. As the first novel to portray the process and effects of equine-assisted psychotherapy, No Dogs or Indians is the story about the importance of history, the relevance of ancestry, and the critical balance between remembering the roots that set us apart while celebrating the humanity that binds us together. ungekürzt. Coming of Age in the Other America shows that despite overwhelming odds, some disadvantaged urban youth do achieve upward mobility. Drawing from 10 years of fieldwork with parents and children who resided in Baltimore public housing, sociologists Stefanie DeLuca, Susan Clampet-Lundquist, and Kathryn Edin highlight the remarkable resiliency of some of the youth who hailed from the nation's poorest neighborhoods and show how the right public policies might help break the cycle of disadvantage. Coming of Age in the Other America illuminates the profound effects of neighborhoods on impoverished families. The authors conducted in-depth interviews and fieldwork with 150 young adults, and found that those who had been able to move to better neighborhoods - either as part of the Moving to Opportunity program or by other means - achieved much higher rates of high school completion and college enrollment than their parents. About half the youth surveyed reported being motivated by an "identity project" - or a strong passion such as music, art, or a dream job - to finish school and build a career. Coming of Age in the Other America presents a sensitive, nuanced account of how a generation of ambitious but underprivileged young Baltimoreans has struggled to succeed. It both challenges long-held myths about inner-city youth and shows how the process of "social reproduction" - where children end up stuck in the same place as their parents-is far from inevitable. The book is published by the Russell Sage Foundation. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Nancy Peterson. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/086578/bk_acx0_086578_sample.mp3.
