La Vecchia, F: Complete Orchestral Music Vol.4
Brilliant Classics' survey of Respighi's complete orchestral music continues here, with a release that explores the Italian composer's modernising of the past (as previously evidenced in works such as Gli uccelli, see volume 1) as well as two of his most mature creations, written in the last eleven years of his life. Starting with the Antiche danze e arie per liuto, three suites in which Respighi balances antiquated forms against modern instrumentation such as the celesta, we move on to Rossiniana, a charming suite derived from Rossini's piano piece Les riens and with a particularly affecting second movement (Lamento). Next follows the Concerto in modo misolidio of 1925, a work for piano and orchestra whose main theme is based on Gregorian chant and with a vigorous Passacaglia of a finale, completing the compilation is the affective Metamorphoseon modi XII, also pervaded by freely plainsong-like themes. As ever, Respighi's imaginative use of timbre and first-class orchestration permeate these engaging works, which are skilfully interpreted by an all-Italian cast. About the first volume in the series, allmusic.com wrote: 'The Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma under Francesco La Vecchia certainly plays very well, with the brass fully on top of the numerous passages in which they are mercilessly exposed.'Other information:- Recorded 2009, 2011 &, 2012, Auditorium Conciliazione, Rome.- This 4th instalment of the Complete Orchestral Works of Ottorino Respighi contains some of his most popular works: the Ancient Airs and Dances, and the Rossiniana.- Respighi wrote his Ancient Aires and Dances on the basis of Renaissance and Baroque dances, either of folk music origin (author unknown), or lute pieces by Italian composers, Molinari, Galilei, Caroso, Roncalli. The rich, brilliant and colourful orchestration by Respighi adds a new dimension, enhancing the joyful or melancholy character of these relatively uncomplicated pieces.- The Concerto Misolidio is a serious large scale Piano Concerto, full of drama and pathos, based on Gregorian Chant (the perfect music for a Dan Brown novel!).- The Respighi series by the Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma, conducted by maestro Francesco la Vecchia received uniform critical acclaim, 4 and 5 star reviews and praise for the power and transparency of the performances.- Contains extensive notes on the music.- Shop: odax

Nadine Sierra - Made for Opera

Piano Recital-Brian Schembri
Probably one of the most brilliant musicians to emerge from Malta, Brian SCHEMBRI started his music studies under the guidance of his father Carmelo SCHEMBRI, very early establishing himself as a highly talented concert pianist. His frequent recital performances on television, radio and in most of Malta's public concert halls rapidly gained him a remarkably popular reputation. He then travelled to the ex-USSR where he studied piano with Alexander SNEGIRIOV and Sergei DORENSKY and conducting with Roman KOFMAN and Gennady ROZHDESTVENSKY at the Kiev and Moscow 'Tchaikowsky' State Conservatories. Since then Schembri has worked as conductor with the Theatre du Capitole and with the Orchestra National du Capitole in Toulouse, l'Orchestre National de Lyon, Permanent Conductor with the OPF in Paris, Principal Conductor with the Orquestra Metropolitana Lisboa as well as lecturer in music at the University of Malta. He has conducted orchestras such as the State Philharmonic Orchestra of Ukraine, l'Orchestra Sinfonica di San Remo, l'Orchestre Symphonique et Lyrique de Nancy, the Malta National Orchestra, l'Orchestre de Bretagne, l'Orchestra Ciutat de Barcelona, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Odessa, the Moscow Soloists, Orquestra Academica Metropolitana, l' Orchestra Filarmonica Marchigiana, the Chamber Orchestra of Geneva, Sofia National Opera Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Apart from giving piano recitals in Malta, Italy, France, Ukraine, Switzerland, Russia and Great Britain, he has performed at the 'Festival Massenet', 'Kiev Symphonic Evenings', 'Octobre en Normandie', 'Les Rencontres Musicales d'Evian', "Festa da Musica", "Lisboa em Festa", "Festival MusicAtlantico", "Festival de Piano Vendôme", "Henley Festival". He has also conducted opera productions at the Rennes and Nancy Opera Theatres and the internationally televised G7 Summit Concert in Lyon. Brian Schembri has composed music for theatre productions at the Manoel Theatre and Teatru Strada Stretta in Malta and the Comédie Française in Paris and has recently recorded Charles Camilleri's new Symphony nr 1 and Kosmos with the the Royal Scottish National Symphony Orchestra. Press comments : These sparkling performances from Brian Schembri and the excellent Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra could not be more stylish or persuasively spontaneous, and the vividly atmospheric recording is first rate. (Gramophone Magazine) A pianist of high calibre. (The Times, UK) ...without the least fault in taste, there was passion and lyrical emotion. (Est Republicain, France) ...very well equipped, both technically and emotionally... (The Daily Telegraph, UK) ...he tackles the work with character and breadth...giving it delicacy and sensibility. (Ouest France) ...a pianist in the grand manner...daringly unfamiliar interpretative forays kept always within the limits of good taste.... (The Times, Malta) ...aristocratic, vibrant, elegant gestures, clearly designing the music, without dryness or heaviness... (Lyon Figaro, France) As soon as the curtain rises we are sure of success with Brian Schembri's clear and secure conducting. (Opera International) ...conducting...a strong, generous and broad vision, as lyrical as one could imagine, without excess...a completely convincing and magnificent sound. (Paris Normandie, France) Everything sounds as if it has been meticulously prepared, but the control is never paralysing and the final impression is of focused vitality....he infused the interpretation with unbelievable warmth. (The Sunday Times, Malta) Brian Schembri with his nervous baton, his guiding gestures full of complicity and warmth, deserves a general bravo all for himself..." (La Tribune Le Progres, France) The reading was intelligent, musical and it did justice to this masterpiece (Shostakovich Symphony nr 14)...it was a great interpretation...a great symphonic concert...clearly the best concert of the season and the best event of all the Portuguese lyrical season. Streams
The CD 'Streams' presents my latest piano music (played by Swiss pianist Patricia Siffert) and a piece for string orchestra & harp (performed by Sinfonica Aosta, Italy). I am a British composer writing in the classical style. My initial source of inspiration is from within, a place where I feel the life-force, which can be experienced as streams of light and sound, can be accessed. Hence the CD title 'Streams'. If the music inspires or uplifts the listener, and can enable them to discover that place or source within themselves, then I am delighted and feel the music has been successful. One of the loveliest things that I hear quite regularly from people who have heard my music is that they went on a journey through the music. People experience being transported out of the concert hall, often getting visual experiences. I am interested in dreams, in soul and it's nature, and it may be that the music helps people to access that different state where they are able to experience freedom and gain insights away from physical constraints. 'I just wanted to email and say how much I've been enjoying your CD, 'Streams'. As ever with your music, there is something very cleansing about it and to listen to it is to go on a spiritual journey. It never fails to carry me to another world. Many thanks for all the pleasure it gives me.' Jane Pearson (journalist and writer) 'Your pieces brought to mind journeys, traveling, experiencing, in relationships, to places, along rivers, life events. Also the many layers of experience (always changing, moving, interacting, giving and receiving) of mind, body, emotions, heart and soul.' Dr K.P. Leicester, England. The title of 'Passage' (one of the piano solos), is almost a play on words, exploring the ideas of transformation, journey, the passage of time or a tunnel or channel as well as simply a piece of music. Similarly, 'Streams' (4 movements), stems from the inspiration of currents of water, from a small source to a powerful waterfall, a steady flow of energy and streams of light and consciousness. This, too, can be described as a journey, 'within the Eternal', reflected by melody, set against mantras of one note or group of notes, or the hum of the harmonic. The CD also includes two other piano solos, 'Always' and 'Apres', and 'Light Falling' for string orchestra and harp played by the Italian orchestra Sinfonica Aosta. Here are some more reviews of my music: "Rosemary Duxbury has the gift of melody" Brian Lee, Caduceus magazine 'Rosemary's music has that combination of artistic integrity and accessibility to a wide audience that eludes most contemporary composers' Stephen Gamble, classical music critic, Leicester Mercury. 'One admires Rosemary's integrity and the sustained quality of her work which combines subtle techniques and developing her special brand of minimalism within a profound spiritual context. The effect of her music is both powerful and accessible, attracting interest from the music lover to the musically trained listener, performer or composer.' Anthony Pither, Director of Music, University of Leicester 'Your new album is stunning' G.C., Kent, England 'Thanks so much for your lovely CD.It is magnificent! I was particularly impressed with the first track with the strings. Beautiful!' A.S., Tennessee, USA 'I just wanted to write and tell you how beautiful and exquisite your music is - it's really moving.' A.H., Nuremberg, Germany This music has been performed around Europe, in America and Canada, and has been broadcast on American, British and Canadian radio. As well as being performed in the concert repertoire, my compositions have been used in multi-media performances, choreographed for dance, for ice skating, used in theatre, and for short film.- Shop: odax
