Together with the first volume "Inquiries in philosophical pragmatics: Theoretical developments," this book collects contributions that represent the state of the art on the interconnection between pragmatics and philosophy. While the first volume presents the philosophical dimension of pragmatics, showing the path from theoretical advances to practical uses and approaches, this second volume offers a specular view on this discipline. Instead of adopting the top-down view of the first volume, this collection of eleven chapters starts from the analysis of linguistic data - which include texts and discourses in different languages, different types of dialogues, different types of interactions, and different modes for expressing meaning - looking for the regularities that govern our production and processing. The chapters are ordered according to their relationship with the themes and methods that define the field of pragmatics. The more explored and classical linguistic issues such as prototype-based generalizations, scalar implicatures, and temporal ordering, lead gradually to the more recent and debated topic of slurs and pejorative language, and finally to the interdisciplinary and more pioneering works addressing specific context of language use, such as marketplace interactions, courtroom speeches, schizophrenic discourse, literary texts for children, and multimedia communication.Chapter 12 is available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.

“Work hard, and don’t look for excuses,” C. Vivian Stringer’s parents told her, “and you can achieve anything.” But her faith and perseverance would be tested many times. A gifted athlete, she had to fight for a place on an all-white cheerleading squad in the 60s. In 1981, just as her coaching career was taking off, her 14-month-old daughter, Nina, was stricken with spinal meningitis. Nina would never walk or talk again. Still grieving, Stringer brought a small, poor, historically black college to the national championships - a triumph hailed as “Hoosiers with an all-female cast.” In 1991, her husband, Bill, fell dead of a sudden heart attack, but that same year, she led yet another young team to the Final Four. Through these dark times and others, Stringer has carried her burdens with grace. Given her history, it was no surprise that she led her team to respond to Don Imus’s slurs with dignity and courage.Standing Tall is a story of quiet strength in the face of punishing odds. Above all, it is an extraordinary love story - love for the game, for the players she has coached, for her close-knit family, and for the husband she lost far too soon. It will resonate long after the last word.  ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Adenrele Ojo. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/bkot/001058/bk_bkot_001058_sample.mp3. On June 4, 2008, at approximately 5:30 p.m. in a quiet suburb of Phoenix, Arizona, Jodi Arias stabbed Travis Alexander 29 times, cut his throat, and then shot him in the head. The killer then went to great lengths to cover up the crime, including sending his grandmother flowers, going to the memorial service, driving by the victim's house, and calling the lead investigator, Detective Esteban Flores.  It would take five years before the case would be put in front of a second jury and leave them to decide whether Arias was a cold, calculating killer or the victim of extreme domestic violence at the hands of an abusive boyfriend.  Paul Sanders sat in the public gallery for each and every one of the 47 days of the trial, and took extensive notes, transposing every twist and turn of it to social media every night. With allegations of pornography, racial slurs, and a search for the answer to the question of domestic violence and alleged child abuse, the journey is both painful and meticulous.  Humbling, intimidating, and powerful at the same time, this trial would test the jurors in ways they could never have foreseen, in their ultimate search for truth and justice.  ungekürzt. When they took my life, I thought I had nothing left to lose. I was a fool. Backroom deals with corrupt nobles, slavery, and murder were all swept under the rug in the pursuit of gold.Despite everything, I found mercenary life fulfilling, until my guild was attacked. Now, I've got unknown, extremely rich enemies on all sides, a mysterious woman with strange magic and compound eyes, and a guild to save. They brought their war to my home. The girl who was blessed when daddy killed mommy; the bird lady born with four arms and no wings; King Kess's trans widower; the most forgettable prince who ever died; secret agents popping up everywhere: and the mind controlling bunny rabbit. Floppy-eared Noveren Aycker aims to retake control of Vasagne, a country that's lost its traditional values and no longer respects its heritage. To win over this corrupted land, he befriends their most influential leader. Can being around such a liberal individual alter the mind of a tyrant? The Blind King created this more accepting society. He spent decades arranging his players to make sure Aycker's power is destroyed once and for all. Nothing would prevent this king from fulfilling his mission. Not even death. Political Nightmare weaves a plot through past and present to arrange a story full of twists. If you suffer from anorexia, schizophrenia, psychosis, depression, OCD or a personality disorder, the themes in this book may trigger your symptoms. This book contains graphic violence, strong language, LGBT slurs, and sexually suggestive scenes. It is, of this author's opinion, not to be listened to by anyone under 18 years of age, or anyone of a sensitive disposition. I, the author, neither condemn or endorse the opinions and actions of Political Nightmare's characters. ungekürzt. China has concentration camps now. Why do Westerners claim our sins are unique? It is now in vogue to celebrate non-Western cultures and disparage Western ones. Some of this is a much-needed reckoning, but much of it fatally undermines the very things that created the greatest, most humane civilization in the world. In The War on the West, Douglas Murray shows how many well-meaning people have been fooled by hypocritical and inconsistent anti-West rhetoric. After all, if we must discard the ideas of Kant, Hume, and Mill for their opinions on race, shouldn't we discard Marx, whose work is peppered with racial slurs and anti-Semitism? Embers of racism remain to be stamped out in America, but what about the raging racist inferno in the Middle East and Asia? It's not just dishonest scholars who benefit from this intellectual fraud but hostile nations and human rights abusers hoping to distract from their own ongoing villainy. Dictators who slaughter their own people are happy to jump on the ?America is a racist country? bandwagon and mimic the language of antiracism and ?pro-justice? movements as PR while making authoritarian conquests. If the West is to survive, it must be defended. The War on the West is not only an incisive takedown of foolish anti-Western arguments but also a rigorous new apologetic for civilization itself.

Anti-racism is a radical idea that reorients and re-energizes the discourse around racism and, even more importantly, leads us toward revolutionary new ways of thinking about each other and about ourselves.Racism is, at its core, a powerful system that creates false hierarchies of human value; its distorted logic extends beyond race, from the way we look at people of different ethnicities or colors of the skin, to the way we treat people of different sexes, gender identities, and types of bodies.Racism is taking many forms, and can occur in many areas. This encompasses prejudice, discrimination, or hatred directed against someone on account of their color, ethnicity, or national origin.People often associate racism with abusive or harassing acts. It needn't involve violent or intimidating behavior, however. Take the name-calling, racial slurs, and the jokes. Or consider situations where individuals may be excluded from groups or activities because of where they originate.Racism can be revealed both through the actions of individuals and their attitudes. It can also be expressed in the institutions and systems. But it may not be shown at all, at times. Not all prejudice is easy to see. For instance, somebody might look through a list of job applicants and decide not to interview people with certain surnames.Racism is more than mere words, convictions, and actions. It includes all the barriers preventing people from enjoying dignity and equality due to race.Buy the audiobook today. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Stan Cunningham. Nearly everyone swears - whether it's over a few too many drinks, in reaction to a stubbed toe, or in flagrante delicto. And yet, we sit idly by as words are banned from television and censored in books. We insist that people excise profanity from their vocabularies, and we punish children for yelling the very same dirty words that we'll mutter in relief seconds after they fall asleep. Swearing, it seems, is an intimate part of us that we have decided to selectively deny. That's a damn shame. Swearing is useful. It can be funny, cathartic, or emotionally arousing. As linguist and cognitive scientist Benjamin K. Bergen shows us, it also opens a new window onto how our brains process language and why languages vary around the world and over time. In this groundbreaking yet ebullient romp through the linguistic muck, Bergen answers intriguing questions: How can patients left otherwise speechless after a stroke still shout "Goddamn!" when they get upset? When did a cock grow to be more than merely a rooster? Why is crap vulgar when poo is just childish? Do slurs make you treat people differently? Why is the first word that Samoan children say not mommy but eat shit? And why do we extend a middle finger to flip someone the bird? Smart as hell and funny as f--k, What the F is mandatory listening for anyone who wants to know how and why we swear. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Benjamin K. Bergen.
