Seven Classic Plays , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 700min
Now, for the first time in audio, Blackstone presents seven great plays in one volume: Euripides' Medea, Shakespeare's The Tempest, Moliere's The Imaginary Invalid, Dumas' Camille, Ibsen's An Enemy of the People, Shaw's Arms and the Man, and Chekhov's Uncle Vanya. These productions illustrate the development of European drama from ancient times to the threshold of the modern theater. A superb repertory company has been assembled for these recordings, all under the direction of veteran producer Yuri Rasovsky, who has won both the Audie Award for book production and the George Foster Peabody Award for broadcasting. These are not mere readings. Rather, they are full performances using all the resources of audio to full advantage. Just as stage plays are "opened up" when adapted to film, so these selections create greater intimacy. "Staginess" is avoided, lively theatrics enhanced, while the substance of the works remains intact. For instance, in Arms and the Man, audio makes possible the judicious integration of the author's witty scene settings, written for the published version of the play, with the play itself. This is the play that established Shaw's reputation as one of the greatest wits of the London drama scene. Music accounts for another noteworthy aspect of these productions. The Imaginary Invalid employs the score that Marc-Antoine Charpentier composed for Moliere's own premiere. It is conducted by Steven Ovitsky, artistic director of the Milwaukee Symphony. The Tempest, composed by Shakespeare as a multi-sensory theater experience, features music on Elizabethan instruments still extant from Shakespeare's own production, resulting in lyrical textual passages, overflowing with exotic images, tantalizing sounds, and a palpable lushness. ungekürzt. Gerry Faust's Tales from the Notre Dame Sideline , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 343min
From Joe Montana’s heroics to Rudy’s theatrics, Notre Dame football in the second half of the 20th century was always entertaining and more often than not successful. In Gerry Faust’s Tales from the Notre Dame Sideline, former head coach Gerry Faust, Notre Dame sports information director John Heisler, and longtime beat writer Bob Logan combine to take listeners where even a rare Notre Dame Stadium ticket cannot - into the locker room and onto the sideline of college football’s most storied program. The tales begin with Notre Dame’s return to prominence in the 1960s and 70s during the Era of Ara, when head coach Ara Parseghian boasted an .836 winning percentage while leading the Irish to two national championships. Then fans will hear about Dan Devine picking up where Parseghian left off, winning another national title in 1977. The tales eventually turn to Faust’s years under the dome, a period filled with great stories but no national championships. Then comes Lou Holtz, the ever-concerned sideline wizard who led the Irish to their last national title in 1988. Fans will also hear about the Bob Davie era and the team’s first two seasons under new head coach Tyrone Willingham There are fascinating and humorous tales of some of the most famous players ever to strap on a gold-painted helmet, from Joe Theismann and Ross Browner to modern names like Montana, Chris Zorich, Tim Brown, Jerome Bettis, and Arnaz Battle. Gerry Faust’s Tales from the Notre Dame Sideline is sure to be a fun listen for anyone who has ever cheered for the Fighting Irish. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Kurt Elfmann. Call Her Bluffs: A Man's Guide to Dealing with Women and Their BS , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 30min
Dealing with women is something that we men have been trying to do since the beginning of time. They play games and these games have no rules except winning at any cost. We cannot expect them to play fair, but what we can do is learn how to recognize their bluffs and show that they are always holding the losing hand. Whether you have been with her for five days or five years the signs will be the same because their playbook is universal. Women will test you. Women will play games with you. Women will push your buttons and do whatever it takes to take control of the relationship. With this books, I hope to teach you guys about one of their most time worn tools. The bluff. When all else fails, they will reach for the chips and threaten to leave or to cry or to cut you off. How often have you fallen for one of those bluffs and given her want she wants. They will bluff you and make you give up something that you love or love to do. The thing that has been hidden behind their theatrics is the fact that you always hold the winning hand. If you do not fold you will always win. Guys, let's face it - constantly losing these pointless battles stinks. Just because they have been winning does not mean that it has to continue. Every bluff has a tell and I am going to show you how to recognize them. This is no ordinary relationship book. Anyone can write one of those feel good "let's hold hands and everything is going to be all right" candy-ass books. You know what, most of those books have been written by women hiding behind male pen names. You can always tell because they constantly preach that you must change yourself and become a sensitive flower that can relate to her feelings. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: William Bahl. American Legends: The Life of Andy Kaufman , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 55min
A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known. Andy Kaufman never liked to call himself a comedian, so it's a testament to his skills and routines that he is nonetheless considered one of the late 20th century's most famous comedians. In fact, Kaufman's eccentric style and theatrics made him one of the most unique performers of his era, whether it was doing a song and dance routine or staying in character to the extent that nobody could tell whether he was being himself or not. To this day, Kaufman is probably best known for his staged wrestling storyline with Jerry "The King" Lawler, which included one of professional wrestling's most famous bouts, and true to form, Kaufman subsequently went on Late Night With David Letterman with a neck brace, claiming he had suffered a broken neck as a result of a piledriver. For his part, Kaufman admitted, "What's real? What's not? That's what I do in my act, test how other people deal with reality." Given his abilities and propensity for practical jokes and outright hoaxes, Kaufman became extremely popular during the last decade of his life, boosted by countless performances on television shows and as Latka Gravas on the hit show Taxi. However, he was diagnosed with a rare type of lung cancer in his mid-30s and died within a few months near the peak of his popularity, which helped cement his cult status among fans. Fittingly, many of those same fans initially assumed that reports of Kaufman's illness and death were also a hoax, even those who had seen some him look gaunt and sickly during his final performances. It was an odd but appropriate tribute to a perf ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Mark Linsenmayer. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/034751/bk_acx0_034751_sample.mp3.
