After a boozy Oxford reunion, Bog,nor is distressed to learn one of his classmates is a killer. Nothing depresses Simon Bognor like a university reunion. Every pimply-faced boy he knew two decades prior has made something of himself, while Bognor languishes at the Board of Trade, muddling along in an investigatory position for which he is hideously unqualified. Although more often than not his job requires catching murderers, he lacks even the observational powers to notice when the head of his old college has been poisoned. Both quite drunk, they totter off to their respective beds. Bognor makes it, but the master doesn’t - he collapses dead at the top of the stairs. Due to the dead man’s ties to the government, Bognor is asked to sort out who did him in. At long last he has the opportunity to prove himself at his old college - but Bognor knows it is just as likely that he will end up in the dunce’s cap. ungekürzt. Language: English. Winner of the Best Picture Oscar 2011 Award One man saved the British Royal Family in the first decades of the 20th century – amazingly, he was an almost unknown, and certainly unqualified, speech therapist called Lionel Logue, whom one newspaper in the 1930s famously dubbed ‘The Quack who saved a King’. Logue wasn’t a British aristocrat or even an Englishman – he was a commoner and an Australian to boot. Nevertheless it was the outgoing, amiable Logue who single-handedly turned the famously nervous, tongue-tied, Duke of York into the man who was capable of becoming King. The King’s Speech is the previously untold story of the extraordinary relationship between Logue and the haunted young man who became King George VI, drawn from Logue’s unpublished personal diaries. They throw extraordinary light on the intimacy of the two men – and the vital role the King’s wife, the late Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, played in bringing them together to save her husband’s reputation and his career as King. ungekürzt. As perilous as our foes may be, the greatest danger in this sphere may very well be ourselves.Wish me luck. David Sedaris' new collection of essays - including live recordings! - tells a most unconventional life story. It begins with a North Carolina childhood filled with speech-therapy classes ("There was the lisp, of course, but more troubling than that was my voice itself, with its excitable tone and high, girlish pitch") and unwanted guitar lessons taught by a midget. From budding performance artist ("The only crimp in my plan was that I seemed to have no talent whatsoever") to "clearly unqualified" writing teacher in Chicago, Sedaris' career leads him to New York City and eventually, of all places, France. His move to Paris poses a number of challenges, chief among them his inability to speak the language. Arriving a "spooky man-child" capable of communicating only through nouns, he undertakes language instruction that leads him ever deeper into cultural confusion. Whether describing the Easter bunny to puzzled classmates or watching a group of men play soccer with a cow, Sedaris brings a view and a voice like no other to every unforgettable encounter. If you are one of the many people thinking of changing or improving your current situation and lifestyle, you may have considered enrolling in a for-profit, postsecondary career training institution. These are the schools that you often see advertised on TV, in local newspapers, and on the Internet. But due to bad business practices and deceptive approaches, these schools have created an environment that puts profit over competence, leading thousands of students to suffer financial and educational losses as a result. This book was written with a specific objective: to create awareness of for-profit, postsecondary career training institutions. It is based on my own experiences working for many years at these kinds of institutions. One of the institutions I worked for is regarded today as the biggest educational failure in the United States and possibly the world. Bad business practices and deceptive approaches, coupled with unqualified instructors, created an environment that put profit over competence and led to the collapse of the company. Thousands of students suffered financial and educational losses as a result. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jeff Werden.
