Provocation: Phantom Air Combat, Book 2 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 482min
With tensions rising in postwar Europe, the Soviet Union closed the air corridors to Berlin, the former German capital, in a bid to starve the population into submission. The Western allies responded by mounting the largest air supply operation the world had ever seen, which would become known as the Berlin Airlift. Step forward into the 1980s, with the Cold War at its height. A NATO reinforcement exercise held at a British airbase in West Germany brings British, American, and French fighter crews together to practice the air corridor policing mission. When a Pembroke transport aircraft engaged in a covert reconnaissance mission is intercepted by a MiG fighter and forced to land in East Germany, events escalate. Will the crew become a pawn in the relentless confrontation as the Soviets increase the rhetoric? Have Western military plans been compromised by the unexpected aggression? Provocation is a fast-moving thriller that replays the tensions of the Cold War and its dark undertones. As with his other novels, David Gledhill takes you into the cockpit of the Phantom fighter jet to experience the action firsthand. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: David Gledhill. Sslits , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 408min
It Came from Outer Space In 1947, just outside of Corona, New Mexico, on a hot July day, a flying saucer crash lands in the desert. The government immediately sends in the military and has the alien craft and its crew transported to an airbase in Roswell. Four of the five alien voyagers are dead; the fifth, a huge, gelatinous creature, becomes the sole focus of their investigation. Leading in the study is CIA officer Celeste Gains. By accident she creates both a mental and physical bond with the alien, who refers to itself as Sslits. For the next 50 years it will be the entire purpose of her existence. Her mission is twofold. First to keep it out of the public eye and second, prevent unscrupulous government agencies from exploiting Sslits' amazing abilities. Among these is nullifying the aging process for her. At 90, Celeste doesn't look older than her midthirties. When a second Sslits arrives on earth, its sole purpose to locate and destroy the first, Celeste is faced with her greatest challenge yet. Veteran writer Michael Vance offers up a fresh and frightening look at a first encounter unlike anything ever imagined. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Michael Goldsmith. Smoky the Brave: How a Feisty Yorkshire Terrier Mascot Became a Comrade-in-Arms during World War II , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 614min
The extraordinary, touching true story of Smoky, the smallest - and arguably bravest - dog of World War II. In February 1944, as Japanese military advances threatened to overwhelm New Guinea, a tiny, four-pound Yorkshire Terrier was discovered hiding in the island's thick jungles. A total mystery as to her origins, she was adopted by US Army Air Force Corporal William "Bill" Wynne, an air-crewman in a photo reconnaissance squadron, becoming an irreplaceable lucky charm for the unit. When Smoky saved Wynne's life by barking a warning of an incoming kamikaze attack, he nicknamed her the "angel from a foxhole". Smoky's exploits continued when she jumped for the unit in a specially designed parachute and famously joined the aircrews flying daring sorties in the war-torn skies. But her most heroic feat was running a cable through a 70-foot pipe no wider than four inches in places to enable critical communication lines to be run across an airbase that had just been seized from the enemy, saving hundreds of ground-crew from being exposed to enemy bombing. In recognition of her efforts, Smoky was awarded eight battle stars. Smoky the Brave brings to vivid life the danger and excitement of the many missions of World War II's smallest hero. ungekürzt.
The Good Pilot, Peter Woodhouse , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 412min
An endearing stand-alone story from best-selling author Alexander McCall Smith. Val was working as a land girl when the Americans arrived at the nearby airfield in 1944. Mike, a young American airman, came into her life soon after, and so, too, did Peter Woodhouse, a dog badly treated on a neighbouring farm and taken in by her aunt. Little persuasion was needed for Mike to take Peter Woodhouse to the airbase, and over time he became the mascot of the American squad, flying with them whenever their Mosquitoes took to the skies. When their plane is shot down over Holland, both Mike and Peter Woodhouse are feared lost. But unknown to their loved ones at home, Mike and Peter Woodhouse survived the crash. Taken in by the Dutch resistance and with the help of Ubi, a German officer, the pair remain in hiding until the end of the war, when they are reunited with Val. We then follow Val, Mike and Peter Woodhouse as they rebuild a life in England and Ubi as he returns to Germany at the end of the war and tries to build a new life for himself. His dream is to run a Wall of Death, a circus ring that pits motorcyclists against gravity as they attempt to stay upright at ever increasing speed.... ungekürzt. Language: English. The King's Shadow: Obsession, Betrayal, and the Deadly Quest for the Lost City of Alexandria
A lost city. A thousand-year-old mystery. A quest that changed history. Beneath the plains of Afghanistan lie the remains of a fabulous city: Alexandria Beneath the Mountains, founded by Alexander the Great. For centuries, it was a meeting point of East and West. Then it vanished. In 1833, it was discovered by the unlikeliest person imaginable: Charles Masson, spy, archaeologist, deserter, and the greatest of nineteenth-century travelers. On the way into one of history's most extraordinary stories, Masson would take tea with kings, travel with holy men and become the master of a hundred disguises. He would spy for the British East India Company and be suspected of spying for Russia at the same time. He would starve, talk his way out of prison and flee assassins. He would see things no westerner had glimpsed before and few have glimpsed since. Masson discovered tens of thousands of pieces of Afghan history, including the 2,000-year-old Bimaran golden casket, which has upon it the earliest known face of the Buddha. On the plains outside Kabul, where Bagram Airbase stands today, he uncovered Alexander's lost city. He would be offered his own kingdom; he would change the world, and the world would destroy him. This is an astounding journey through nineteenth-century India and Afghanistan, a world of espionage and dreamers, murder, betrayal, and boundless hope. At the edge of empire, amid the deserts and the mountains, The King's Shadow is a story about how our wildest dreams can change the world.- Shop: buecher

Letters to the Lost , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1016min
An accomplished novel from a talented writer, Letters to the Lost is the kind of love story that will sweep you away from the very first minute. Iona Grey's prose is warm, evocative, and immediately engaging; her characters become so real you can't bear to let them go. Late on a frozen February evening, a young woman is running through the streets of London. Having fled from her abusive boyfriend and with nowhere to go, Jess stumbles onto a forgotten lane where a small, clearly unlived-in old house offers her best chance of shelter for the night. The next morning a mysterious letter arrives - and when she can't help but open it, she finds herself drawn inexorably into the story of two lovers from another time. In London 1942, Stella meets Dan, a US airman, quite by accident. But there is no denying the impossible, unstoppable love that draws them together. Dan is a B-17 pilot flying his bomber into Europe from a British airbase, his odds of survival at one in five. The odds are stacked against the pair; the one thing they hold on to is the letters they write to each other. Fate is unkind, and they are separated by decades and continents. In the present, Jess becomes determined to find out what happened to them. Her hope - inspired by a love so powerful it spans a lifetime - will lead her to find a startling redemption in her own life in a powerfully moving novel perfect for fans of Sarah Jio and Kate Morton. ungekürzt.
