From New York Times best-selling authors, Penelope Ward and Vi Keeland, comes a new standalone novel. It started out like any normal day. Then the fender bender happened. The guy I collided with drove an expensive car and was drop-dead gorgeous. Too bad he was also a total jerk. We argued over whose fault it was and any other thing that came out of his condescending mouth. Eventually, the police came and we went our separate ways. The insurance companies would have to figure things out. I had a job interview to get to anyway - one I was excited about. Though that excitement changed to disappointment the moment the person interviewing me walked in. The guy from the accident. Whoops! Yeah, so I didn’t get the position. The problem was, I really wanted it. No, I needed it. Anything to get me out of my current career and back into working with kids. So, even though Hollis LaCroix was as intimidating as he was devastatingly handsome, I went back to see him and begged for a chance. To my surprise, he gave me a shot taking care of his troubled niece. At least my attraction to him wouldn’t be able to go anywhere. I wasn’t about to jeopardize my job or the strong bond Hailey and I formed. But resisting the magnetic pull between us wasn’t that simple. (Then there was our little underwear game - don’t ask.) We continued to flirt without crossing the line - until it finally happened. This is the part of the story where we fall in love and live happily ever after, right? Well, life has a way of throwing some major curveballs. Ours was one I didn’t see coming.   ungekürzt. When Barack Obama ran on a platform of "hope and change" four years ago, he promised to unite the country. But as Kate Obenshain reveals in Divider-in-Chief, Obama has done exactly the opposite. Rather than seeking common sense, pro-American solutions, he has pursued far-left policies, a radical leftist agenda, and an attitude that’s both condescending and dismissive of Main Street America. As a result, America has become a nation of even greater polarization and disillusionment. In Divider-in-Chief, Obenshain exposes how Obama pushed for the HHS mandate, forcing people of faith to violate their conscience; how Obama has condoned the actions of Occupy Wall Street, saying, "You are the reason I ran for office," while he vilifies free markets and businessmen across America; how Obama seizes on opportunities to highlight racial discord and then accuses any critic of being "a racist"; and that, although Obama ran as a champion for the downtrodden, the unemployment rate is disproportionately high among minorities and women. Obenshain paints a picture of a president who promotes class warfare, aggravating racial, gender, and economic differences in order to advance his ideological agenda. Searing and controversial, Divider-in-Chief makes the case that we must defeat Barack Obama before he tears our nation apart. Kate Obenshain, a rising star in the conservative movement, was the chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia and is now the vice president of the Young America’s Foundation and a respected board member of the Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute. She travels across the country speaking on college campuses, at Tea Party rallies, and special events. She is also a regular Fox News contributor and has appeared on numerous cable news shows. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Nicole Vilencia. Walking past an alleyway is when it hit. Suddenly, I felt a banging on my skull as though I was hit with a truck. The only thing I could see were stars. As I was going down, I threw an uppercut wildly and kept throwing as I went down. I couldn't tell if I connected, but I sure as hell felt a couple of good kicks to my ribs. As hard as I fought to stay awake, all I saw in front of my eyes was a growing blackness. As I went out, I swore I heard a voice in my ear threatening me and the squeal of tires. Such is the life of John Hasard. P.I. Hasard wasn't always a loner. He was made that way due to the loss of his wife, partner, and pretty much everyone else that he ever got close to. Was he bad luck, or was he just getting what he deserved? But, Hasard isn't alone. Whether it's a sassy cab driver, an arrogant professor, a condescending secretary, or a surly bartender, John's world is full of people who care about him and want to help, regardless if he wants it or not. The stories of John Hasard are a throwback to classic pulp detective stories. Nasty men, beautiful dames, and eccentric sidekicks; people the city, and the stories that Hasard lives within. So, pour yourself a drink on the rocks, tilt your fedora, light one if you got it, and perch yourself on the edge of your seat for a classic PI type two fisted listen. Faced with uncertainty, grief, shame, and battling his own cowardice, Henry Fleming eagerly looks forward to being injured to display his heroism and overcome his fears, volunteering to carry the flag into battle, unarmed, and vulnerable.Story 2: The Open Boat by Stephen Crane (Novel)Four desperate, exhausted men are forced together by fate and nature after being shipwrecked. The reality of their situation is grim as they drift along in their small boat, isolated, fatigued, and uncertain. In an attempt to blame or call out to a higher power for assistance, the protagonist, the iconic condescending observer, understands how nature’s indifference to their circumstances will seal their fate.Five Short Stories:"The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky”"Death and the Child”"A Great Mistake""A Man and Some Others""The Men in the Storm"In these five unabridged short stories, Stephen Crane masterfully depicts the human condition. Through his keen observations of the simple, unnoticed aspects of life, he deftly describes man’s relationship to society, human nature, and the power of transformation. Jane Ramsey was screaming inside. To all appearances, she had it all: a lasting marriage to a corporate executive, a beautiful home in New Jersey, and the freedom to do what she wants. But now her pampered husband Jack has taken early retirement, and he expects her to serve him like his pretty young secretary always did - plus be his maid and personal chef. Jane could tolerate Jack and his condescending attitude when he was working long hours. Now winter is coming and they'll be snowbound. For months. Just him and her. Aren't heart attacks common in men his age? But she has to put such thoughts out of her mind. And quickly, before she does something she regrets. More and more, she thinks about her sister Irene's constant talk about how wonderful life as a snowbird is in Phoenix. Gradually, she wears Jack down and they go to visit Irene and her husband in their idyllic, gated retirement community. Introduced to Irene and her husband's circle of retiree friends, Jane quickly discovers that despite oversized retirement accounts and endless rounds of golf on picture-perfect courses, real life in these communities is nothing like the brochures. Resentment, sexual jealously, envy, and dark secrets seethe just below the surface. Soon the façade of happiness drops completely for one of their friends, and Jane, Irene and the other wives find themselves unwitting co-conspirators in the most heinous of crimes. Will they be able to maintain their pact of silence and return to their comfortable lives - or will a shrewd police detective discover the truth? ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Terry Rose. An eye-opening guide to the communication mistakes we all make and what to say instead. Have you ever been told that your communication style is too confrontational? Do you have problems persuading your coworkers and managers without sounding arrogant or condescending? Have you said something and immediately regretted it? Have you ever said something you can't take back? Have you ever wondered later, "What was I thinking?"We have all been there. We all make mistakes. We all suffer from a lapse in good judgment from time to time. Sometimes these mistakes are a one-off, but when made repeatedly can lead to a domino effect of problems. When that happens, it can be hard to recover. The important thing, as professionals, is that we learn from our mistakes and hopefully do not make the same ones again, thus stopping the dominoes before they all fall. I've been making the mistakes contained in this book for almost three decades as a professional software developer. I was fired from on my first jobs for being too arrogant and also asking too many questions. I once nearly lost my job because I knew better than my leadership. One mistake even nearly got me arrested! All these stories and more are in this book. Had I never learned from these mistakes, they probably would have been the end of my career. Fortunately, we humans are good at learning from experience. This book is your chance to learn from mine, and hopefully have a good laugh at my expense from time to time. In fact, I hope you do laugh. I often look back, chuckle, and wonder what had possessed me to say something. Table of contents:Thoughts Don't succumb to prejudiceDon't assume unwiselyDon't get angryWords Don't whineDon't use so many TLAsDon't talk so fastDon't be dishonestDon't be too honestDon't criticize in publicDon't ta ungekürzt. Powerless moments can feel overwhelming. These moments hurt. We often react to them by experiencing even more emotions: despair, frustration, anger, hopelessness...sound familiar? For example: The news delivers stories of violence, hatred, and tragedy. Murder, rioting, looting, and destruction are presented in abundance in the news and social media sources daily. Work life can be another source of powerless feelings, as we juggle office politics, money struggles, and trying to please everyone while striving for work-life balance. Home life can also be overwhelming, overloaded with responsibilities, expectations, demands, children, teens, hormones, drama, arguments, enforcing rules, and trying to find time for ourselves. People can be mean. People can be thoughtless, condescending, rude, selfish, and insensitive. We can too. And then we feel crappy about it. People we love get sick, have accidents, and sometimes die. Or we get sick, have accidents, and might die sooner than we had expected. It seems unfair. I noticed that when I'm experiencing one of those moments, writing a message to myself helps me feel more empowered. Sometimes the message is a prayer to my higher wisdom, or a poem, or a series of affirmations. After a while of doing this, I had a little collection of them. So, I started putting them into categories organized by what powerless feeling I was trying to change by writing that particular message. I realized that the writings were becoming something cohesive; a little guide to choose an empowering message based on the situation I was facing in the moment. I hope that when you're feeling powerless, or any of the unpleasant emotions that often follow, that you'll listen to this book, identify how you feel, and hear something that speaks to you in such a way that your powerless feeling is replaced by something better. ungekürzt. Many of my readers email me with lifetime symptoms of anxiety and depression. They feel as though they missed out on their childhood. They are frustrated, and their relationships with others are suffering because of it. They are struggling to have a relationship with one of the most important people in their life: their father. Fathers are meant to be the trunk of the entire family dynamic. They are supposed to be rock steady and hard-working. They are supposed to be gentle and emotionally validating when their children need a shoulder to cry on. They are expected to play baseball in the backyard and attend every birthday party. They are meant to be there for guidance and structure. A father's role is to support the mother also in her role in child-rearing efforts. A father who doesn't fill his role leaves us wanting for more. He causes us to have low self-esteem and low self-confidence. He causes us an inability to fully develop who we are, and to form our own identity. He doesn't teach us all of the life skills that we need in order to cope with a busy and hectic world. He may teach us to choose all the wrong partners later in life, or to be noncommittal in our relationships. Many of us did not have the perfect dad. We did not have an ideal or health parent-child relationship with our dad. Our fathers were far from it. They were self-absorbed, selfish, condescending, critical, judgmental and hurtful. They told us that they were too busy to play ball in the backyard, and they failed to show up to many of the life events that were important to us as children. Children were not their priority. It was very evident to us that they had better things to do. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Pete Beretta. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/053455/bk_acx0_053455_sample.mp3.
