The Speckled Band: A Sherlock Holmes Story , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 76min
The Speckled Band is one of 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories written by Scottish author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The story first appeared in The Strand Magazine in 1892 with illustrations by Sidney Paget. Doyle agreed with Holmes fans that The Speckled Band was his best Sherlock Holmes story. The narrative moves along at a rapid pace, with Holmes making his many witty and spot-on points based on evidence that only Holmes could deduce. Rationalists love this story because Holmes admits he was on the wrong track about the situation but allowed new facts to guide him in a new direction. Doyle was a doctor himself and much like Dr. Watson in many ways. Holmes was modeled after an associate of Doyle’s whom he had great admiration for. Doyle has fun with the closed room mystery that isn’t so closed! This is the Holmes story to start with. As with all Simply short stories, you should enjoy the ideas put forth in the introduction and afterword: things to think about, or write about if you are a student. A brief biography appears in all of our Arthur Conan Doyle audiobooks. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Deaver Brown. Woman with Birthmark: An Inspector Van Veeteren Mystery , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 434min
After hearing her mother’s deathbed confession and following the dreary funeral, Maria Adler realizes she has no other option but to seize upon her mother’s imperative to do something. Dissolving the life she loathes, Maria changes her appearance and disappears. When she emerges, revenge is her sole occupation. Inspector Van Veeteren and his associates are left bewildered by the curious murder of a man shot twice in the heart and twice below the belt. He was a quiet, utterly dull man, and the only suspicious activity his surviving wife can recall is a series of peculiar phone calls. Repeatedly the telephone would ring, offering nothing but the words of an obscure pop song from the 1960s. This siren song is linked to an identical murder, but the true link between these heinous crimes remains unknown, while a daughter’s pride grows with the satisfaction of vengeance and another detective’s lover offers telling insights that only an outsider could deduce. With the critical eye and cool observation necessary for a successful chess match, Van Veeteren pursues his subject across the country, wading through outrageous leads and fruitless tips to a chilling conclusion. ungekürzt. Seven Skins: Jackie Shaw, Book 2 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 561min
Seven Skins - two words scrawled above a hit list. Six names - targets for assassination by bomb, bullet or blade. Three killers - two vicious professionals and an idealistic young terrorist. Two Security Service officers - confused and at each other’s throats. One lost girl - abused and on the run. And Jackie Shaw - outnumbered, disavowed and ready to tear an entire city apart. When a series of apparently random assassinations hit London, MI5 and GCHQ deduce that the killers are working through a hit list of retired security forces operatives and that their next target is an ex-police officer from Belfast now living rough in the capital. Desperate to find the officer before he too is eliminated, the Security Services coerce Jackie Shaw, a man steeped in the violent history of Northern Ireland, into working for them. While the three killers stalk their next victim, Jackie trawls the city’s underbelly in search of their target as he tries to protect a girl desperate to escape a gang of brutal traffickers. Leaving a trail of bullet casings and bodies, Jackie and the girl find themselves alone and on the run, fighting not just to uncover what or who the Seven Skins are but to save their own lives. ungekürzt.
