Un Sueno en la Floresta-A Dream in the Forest
Cheryl Grice is particularly acclaimed for her exquisitely sensitive performances of Spanish and South American music, and has included many of her favourite pieces in this recording. She won a Scholarship at the age of 16 to the Royal Manchester College of Music (England) studying under Gordon Crosskey and receiving private tuition from International Artist John Williams. She graduated at the age of 20 with the first ever Distinction awarded to a guitarist at the RNCM in her Performance Degree. At 18 she won the 'Lanchester' International Guitar Competition (England), and the 'Concorso Internazionale di Chitarra di Alessandria' (Italy). Cheryl's international reputation was further established by her stunning performance of Albeniz' Sevilla in BBC 2's 'Masterclass Series' with Julian Bream in 1978. Later that year Bream personally invited Cheryl to record a one hour lesson with him in Paris for French television. Both of these recordings can be viewed on You Tube, along with other recordings. In 1979 Cheryl gave the debut performance of Wilfred Joseph's Saratoga Concerto for Guitar/Harp and Harpsichord in the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. In 1980 she gained joint 2nd place in the Segovia International Competition filmed on location in Kent Castle in England. Her performance of the hauntingly beautiful Un Sueno en la Floresta by Augustin Barrios was played many times throughout the film. Cheryl toured for many years before emigrating with her young family to New Zealand in 1997. Cheryl now lives in Wellington where she teaches privately, and regularly tours as a solo artist. She also performs with Duo Mosaica (guitar/violin and soprano sax) and with Trio con Brio (guitar/violin/viola). Trio con Brio have recorded a CD entitled 'Playera' which has various combinations of instruments on each track, and is a beautiful and haunting CD. This will be available for purchase/download in the near future. In 2011 Cheryl became one of the founding members of the NZGQ and their inaugural recording should also be available to purchase in the very near future.- Shop: odax
