A Programing Contingency Analysis of Mental Health presents Dr. Israel Goldiamond's reflections on various ways we formulate behavioral and emotional problems, most often in traditional terms of mental health disorders, mental diseases or illnesses, psychopathological disorders, and so on - what he calls a pathological orientation. Here, Goldiamond argues for a groundbreaking alternative view from the vantage point of radical behaviorism. The book begins by discussing contingency relations between behavior and its past and present consequences, along with other environmental events. It reminds us that this approach sits comfortably alongside other consequential systems in the social and biological sciences, particularly decision theory and evolution. This behaviorist system regards most important human behaviors as being emitted rather than stimulus-elicited. Described are some of the diverse origins of behavior, including the effects of environmental consequences and the programing procedures of social and cultural inheritance. The exposition includes decision matrices which rationalize some of the programed patterns and the accompanying thoughts and emotions commonly found in mental illness. As a result of this nonlinear contingency analysis, such patterns may be considered adaptive rather than maladaptive. The book describes programs based on those matrices and outlines how they might be applied to mitigate any problems or costs associated with those patterns. The book concludes by moving from individual analysis to social analysis, with particular reference to some societal contingencies that may maintain the pathological orientation and others that might shift our gaze in the direction proposed here. Alongside Dr. Goldiamond's original work, this volume features a new introduction from Dr. Paul Thomas Andronis and Dr. T. V. Joe Layng, as well as an article tracing the history of the non-linear thinking of Dr. Goldiamond, first published in The Behavior Analyst. It will be a must-read for anyone working in the analysis of and clinical intervention in problems associated with mental health, or those more generally interested in the work of Israel Goldiamond.

A thorough introduction to computer processing of remotely-sensed images, processing methods, and applicationsRemote sensing is a crucial form of measurement that allows for the gauging of an object or space without direct physical contact, allowing for the assessment and recording of a target under conditions which would normally render access difficult or impossible. This is done through the analysis and interpretation of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) that is reflected or emitted by an object, surveyed and recorded by an observer or instrument that is not in contact with the target. This methodology is particularly of importance in Earth observation by remote sensing (EO), wherein airborne or satellite-borne instruments of EMR provide data on the planet's land, seas, ice, and atmosphere. This permits scientists to establish relationships between the measurements and the nature and distribution of phenomena on the Earth's surface or within the atmosphere.Still relying on a visual approach to the material, the fifth edition of this successful textbook provides students with methods of computer processing of remotely sensed data and introducing them to environmental applications which make use of remotely-sensed products. The new edition's content has been rearranged to be more clearly focused on image processing methods and applications in remote sensing with new examples, including material on the Copernicus missions, microsatellites and recently launched SAR satellites, as well as time series analysis methods. The fifth edition of Computer Processing of Remotely-Sensed Images also contains:* A cohesive presentation of the fundamental components of earth observation remote sensing that is easy to understand and highly digestible* Largely non-technical language providing insights into more advanced topics that may be too difficult for a non-mathematician to understand* Illustrations and example boxes throughout the book to illustrate concepts, as well as revised examples that reflect the latest information* References and links to the most up-to-date online and open access sources used by studentsComputer Processing of Remotely-Sensed Images is a useful textbook for advanced undergraduates and postgraduate students taking courses in remote sensing and GIS in Geography, Geology, and Earth/Environmental Science departments.

Bats are fascinating mammals about which we still have much to learn. As well as using ultrasonic echolocation calls for orientation and while foraging, they also have a complex array of vocalisations for communication. These are known as social calls and are an essential component of their colonial lifestyle. This book brings together the current state of knowledge of social calls relating to the bat species occurring within Britain and Ireland, with some additional examples from species represented elsewhere in Europe. It includes access to a downloadable library of calls to be used in conjunction with the book.Downloadable call library Social calls are complex and intriguing to listen to; they are after all produced with listeners in mind (other bats). To enjoy and fully appreciate social calls the reader must also have the opportunity to become a listener: each of the presented sonograms in the book is cross-referenced to downloadable 'time expanded' .wav sound files which are contained within a much wider library of calls for you to explore.Included in Social Calls of the Bats of Britain and Ireland The authors start with an overview of the species of bats in Britain and Ireland (Chapter 1), and then introduce us to communication within the social world of bats (Chapter 2). Referencing the latest research, the authors explore how these calls can be classified according to their structure, and in many cases the context in which the calls are thought to be emitted (Chapter 3). Chapter 4 addresses aspects of survey methodology to be considered by those studying social calls. This leads on to the analysis of calls (Chapter 5), detailing the specific methods used and parameters commonly measured by researchers. The final, and main chapter (Chapter 6) introduces the 23 species covered in the book giving each a detailed profile including: habitat preferences, typical roosting locations, roost emergence times, mating strategies and maternity behaviour. Each species profile includes what is known about the social calls for that species and this text is supported by colour sonograms (created using Pettersson BatSound V4.1) of most of the calls discussed. Each sonogram is linked to a .wav sound file (Time Expansion x10) within the downloadable library. The sound files allow the reader to hear, as well as see, the calls produced using any bat sound analysis software that supports the .wav format. The authors conclude with a bibliography and an extensive list of references directly cross-referenced throughout the book.

Einflüsse von Neil Young, Elliott Smith und Half Japanese. Produziert von Chris Potter (The Verve) und Paul Butler (The Bees, Devendra Banhart, St Paul & Broken Bones)Tipped by many to become one of the most exciting and unique British guitar bands of the decade off the back of rapturous critical acclaim, Pale Seas, on the eve of the release of a long-anticipated debut album, simply disappeared. No hiatus announcement, no press release, nothing. For the following three years the band, led by enigmatic frontman Jacob Scott alongside Graham Poole (Lead Guitar), Matthew Bishop (Bass) & Andrew Richardson (Drums), emitted no signal, instead embarking upon a period of prolonged isolation, rejecting the industry and the outside world to hole themselves away inside a medieval abbey in most remote Isle of Wight. To capture their expansive sound and enhance it further the band enlisted the help of producer Chris Potter (The Verve, Urban Hymns) & Paul Butler (Michael Kiwanuka, Devendra Banhart & The Bees), with whom the band had begun their journey 5 years previously. Scott is influenced by Neil Young, Elliott Smith and Half Japanese but it s not been music that s shaped who he is as an artist. His mother, a painter, was a much bigger influence. I learned more from growing up with her than I have from music. She found a way to channel her life experiences into something beautiful and real. To see that, to witness someone so close to you turning their life in to art was, to me, more powerful than hearing any band play. TRACKS: 1. Into The Night 2. My Own Mind 3. Someday 4. In Bank's vocal writing it is as if a complete physical presence is struggling into existence through the sound of a voice. An entire body with all it's movements, gestures and functions is being emitted through the performer's mouth. Through the text and the creative response within him, Bank allows the music to make a direct and naked communication of the human condition. Jacques Bank often successfully forges a synthesis between text and music so that the whole is not only greater then the sum of it's parts but yields, moreover, something entirely new and unforgettable. Through his original and highly individual ways of combining text and music he achieves new insights and creates intensely expressive works of art. Furthermore, his fine tuning to the drama that surrounds us in everyday life gives his music an added resonance that can be deeply stirring for the sensitive listener and is often touching upon the roots of human existence in a very personal and very original way. Based on quotations from David Barton, Jurrien Sligter and Joep Straesser. Jacques Bank (born April 18 1943) studied composition with Ton de Leeuw and Jos Kunst at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam. In 1974 he finished his studies with the Prize for Composition. After that he broke radically from his early serialistic tinted writing. Reorientation on tonality followed. From that moment on the starting-point of new compositions was the translation of an emotional stimulus, often generated by some extra-musical element, into music. The first result of this new approach was Last Post (1975). He wrote numerous works, varying from operas to solo pieces. Nearly always a text was the starting-point. Consequently, compositions in which the voice is used in one way or other are in the majority. Performances took place in Holland and abroad e.g. during the Gaudeamus Musicweeks, the Holland Festival and the World Music Days in Tel Aviv, Warsaw, Seoul and Zagreb. He participated regularly in radio programmes. Among them was a series dedicated to the life and works of Hector Berlioz. This led in 1993 to Episodes de la Vie d'un Artiste. It was commissioned by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra for the celebration of it's 75th anniversary. The Utrecht Conservatory organized in 1996 a lecture and three concerts, dedicated to Bank's compositions, including Mesmerised and Late of the City of Rome. In 2000 De Bijlmer Opera, commissioned by the orchestra De Volharding, was performed twelve times with great success. Many years of cooperation with the Basho ensemble led in 2001 to a series of concerts with three compositions especially written for this ensemble: Gebroken Sprookjes (Broken Fairy Tales), Fred Walking Badger and Aaron Rivers are missing and John Clare. Also in 2001 the recorder concerto Recorders was performed for the first time by Helge Stiegler and the ensemble Mosaik in Austria and in 2002 Tonal Colours was premièred by Michael Quinn on the organ of Saint Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin. During a concert in Lissabon in 2003 the ensemble Ciudate performed four pieces by Bank. Among them Blind Boy Fuller, his first 'official' composition, dating from 1966. Commissioned by Dutch Radio, he wrote in 2004 the composition Uiteindelijke Dingen (Final Matters) for mixed choir and orchestra. In 2006 the Nederlands Zangtheater went on tour in several towns in The Netherlands with the 'choir opera' De ondergeschoven Koningin (The illegitimate Queen). Invitation to Eternity, the last composed, but first part of the John Clare Triptych was performed for the first time by the Canadian ensemble Continuum in Toronto in 2007. Eighteen years after the first performance the Requiem voor een Levende (Requiem for a living One) was performed again by a.o. The choir Consensus Vocalis and the Nederlands Accordeon Ensemble in 2007 and 2008. In 2009/2010 Bank finished his opera Major Taylor, the fastest Bicycle Rider in the World about Marshall 'Major' Taylor, the first black sports hero of America. In 2011 his composition Die Pfeiferstube for 2 flute-soloists, 8 wind instruments, piano and percussion was performed for the first time in the Bimhuis in Amsterdam by the David Kweksilber Big Band. This orchestra also commissioned the piece. In 2011/12 Bank was Composer in Residence at the Utrecht Conservatory. In November 2012 his composition Felix und Clara, written for mixed choir, string quartet and speaking voice, will be performed in New York by the choir CANTORI NEW YORK. At the 1985 Rostrum of Composers Minutes of Lives received an important commendation. In 1989 the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts awarded the Matthijs Vermeulen Prize (the most prestigious prize for composition in The Netherlands) for his Requiem voor een Levende. The mini-opera The Piano Teacher was awarded the Prize of the International Competition for Mini-opera for Children 1992 in Warsaw.

The different music heritages of all the continents have mixed for centuries in the area of Rio de la Plata and now also Finnish evergreens were thrown there. The outcome is a new Finnish-Argentinian tango. Aires de Finlandia is a unique international collaboration project between the homeland of tango and the distant Finland where it was adopted as national music during World War II and especially in the 1960s. Singer-songwriter Petri Kaivanto got the sting of tango bee already as a baby. In the high school he started his own tango band which later evolved to a sextet, Los Leotardos, together with the Finnish bandoneonist Petri Ikkelä. This young band was among the first to spread the gospel of real Argentinian tango in the late 80's in Finland. The producer-arranger, guitarist-songwriter Alejandro Polemann is a versatile musician: in addition to his many projects, he has worked as the chief of Music Faculty in the La Plata University. His regular bands are the folk music group Flor de Enchastre and the appreciated duo with clarinetist Pablo Szapiro. Alejandro and Petri met in Helsinki in June 2001 and so the idea of the recording was born. Four of the tracks were recorded already in February 2004, but it took until February 2007 until the time was right to do an entire album. The album Aires de Finlandia, vol. 1 ready to be released will hopefully be just a pilot for a long and new kind of a tango collaboration between Finland and Argentina. Besides fresh interpretations of Finnish classics, the tangocaleidoscope of Alejandro and Petri emitted also original compositions, one Argentinian tango in a candombé version and two special cover versions of Astor Piazzolla's songs. The album will be released in Finland in the end of August 2007. The international version of the album will hopefully be released soon. Twelve of the 18 tracks have already been sung in two languages and the Finnish album includes already some bonus tracks like the Spanish language versions of Tango Pelargonia and tango Täysikuu (Full moon) which has become a waltz. In addition to Petri and Alejandro, cover lyrics have been written by an Argentinian living in Finland, composer-pianist José Sileoni. For the first time Finnish tango can be proposed to an international tango audience in an understandable form. The master was entirely produced in Buenos Aires and right after the sessions in February 2007, there was a concert in the famous tango restaurant Esquina Homero Manzi. The national radios of Argentina and Finland made programs about the recording and also a 'Making of' documentary is being produced. In June 2007 Petri and the original trio with 2 Finnish guest musicians did a minitour in Helsinki, Tallinn and St. Petersburg, where the Aires de Finlandia -project had the honor of representing Finnish tango in the program of the festive year of Finnish Music, organized by the Finnish Institute in St. Petersburg.
