There is such a thing as fighting for a principle, an idea, but principle and idea must be incarnate, and the principle of states' rights was incarnate in the historical life of the Southern people. Submission to any encroachment on the rights of a State means slavery. To us, submission meant slavery, as it did to Pericles and the Athenians. From the onset of the war, Basil L. Gildersleeve, native of Charleston, South Carolina, a scholar, and professor of Greek at the University of Virginia left his students every Spring to return to the army until he was wounded during a skirmish in the Shenadoah Valley in 1864. Thirty years later he authored The Creed of the Old South, and A Southerner in the Peloponnesian War included in this audiobook. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: John Michaels. Based on Amy Gorman's interviews, Aging Artfully portrays the lives of 12 vibrant women in the visual and performing arts, all in their ninth decade and beyond, living with zest. They are living in the San Francisco Bay Area, coming from diverse ethnic backgrounds: Frances Catlett, painter; Elsie Ogata, ikebana artist; Isabel Ferguson, actor and visual artist; Lily Hearst, pianist; Grace Gildersleeve, rug braider; Ann Davlin (aka Grace Lowell), dancer; Mary Beth Washington (aka Orunamama), storyteller: Rosa Maria Morales Escobar, folklorico dancer; Madeleine Mason, sculptor; Dorothy Takahashi Toy, dancer; Faith Petric, folksinger; Stella Toogood, storyteller. The book honors the rich creativity of aging and challenges popular negative attitudes and perceptions toward being old. The book suggests reasons why arts activities are ideal ways to increase health in the last stages of life. The positive role models portrayed are still completely engaged with and in love with their art forms. They have no time for complaining. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Becky Parker. A hilarious collection of episodes from the beloved radio show Fibber McGee & Molly Excitable and loose-lipped Fibber means well enough, but it's not always easy for even-tempered Molly to keep him in check and out of trouble. Of course, the long suffering Mrs. McGee's penchant for patience makes it all the funnier when she's finally pushed to the point of exasperation. What both McGees have in common is that they're fabulously friendly, opening their door at 79 Wistful Vista to welcome all sorts of interesting guests, including Mayor LaTrivia, Doc Gamble, and neighborly nemesis Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve. Jim and Marian Jordan star in this radio comedy classic, in which warm-heartedness usually wins out over hot-headedness. A safe bet for laughs - as long as you don't go too close to the closet. Episodes include: "McGee's Fish Fry", "Fifteenth Wedding Anniversary", "Fibber's Gossip Column", "Fibber Is Too Sick for Housework", "Killer Canova's Autograph", "The Rummage Sale", "Raking Leaves", "Halloween Party at Gildersleeve's House", "The Wistful Vista Auto Show", Hiawatha", "Traffic Ticket", and "The Overdue Library Book". Fibber McGee & Molly had a long and successful run on radio from 1935 to 1959, featuring its creators and stars, married couple Jim and Marian Jordan. Living in the fictional Midwestern city of Wistful Vista, Fibber was an American teller of tall tales and a braggart, usually to the exasperation of his long-suffering wife, Molly, who tried to keep him out of trouble. Fibber's weekly schemes would be interrupted by, inspired by, and often played upon the people of Wistful Vista, a set of regular players and characters that were as beloved as the stars of the program. Life in their town of Wistful Vista followed a well-developed formula but was always fresh. The show began as a comic reflection of Depression-era America, but as time went on and the shadows of war came over the nation, the show again caught the mood of the country. World War II was fought on the home front in Wistful Vista as surely as anywhere else in America, but here they had the benefit of Fibber's somewhat addled perspective on life. The episodes in this collection are: "Molly's Ex-Boyfriend Comes to Dinner" 12/26/39, "McGee Builds a Dog House" 1/2/40, "Tickets to See Gone with the Wind" 1/9/40, "McGee's Car Is Stolen" 1/16/40, "Gildersleeve Girdle Show" 1/23/40, "Fibber's Old Blue Suit" 1/30/40, "Fibber's Birthday" 2/6/40, "Egyptian Good Luck Ring" 2/13/40, "Nothing but the Truth" 2/20/40, "Molly's Fur Coat and Fibber's Allergies" 2/27/40, "The Hall Closet" with guest Gracie Allen 3/5/40, "Make a Pal of Your Wife Week" 3/12/40. Language: English. Narrator: Jim Jordan, Marian Jordan. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/blak/008794/bk_blak_008794_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.
