The Story About Peter Wells , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 80min
Peter Wells was 26, his partner was 18. Because this was England in 1974, when the gay age of consent was 21, Wells was sentenced to two and a half years in jail. There, he was assaulted and abused by guards and inmates alike. On release from prison, he was interviewed by Gay News just as songwriter Tom Robinson was composing "Glad to Be Gay". He devoted a verse to Wells' case, and that inspired this biography. As a generation comes of age who are incredulous that homosexuality was ever illegal, it is important to remember our social history. Robinson had highlighted it topically but, nearly 40 years on, this book was conceived to do it historically, illustrating injustice with a typical life story. However, like all of us, on closer inspection Peter Wells turned out to have a more complicated life than first appeared. Beyond the man himself, the Peter Wells story illuminates not only our persecution of gay men but other dark areas of our recent past too. His early years were fraught with tragedy, losing two sets of parents before his teens, after which he was sent to the barbarity of a "training ship" for orphaned and delinquent youths. Damaged youngsters were berated rather than counselled and the Victorian brutalization of children continued well into modern times. Peter Wells was a victim of it all. Living in an affluent Surrey village in the late 1970s, behind his ostentatious social veneer he launched an anonymous case at the European Courts of Human Rights challenging the British government's age discrimination against gay men. It was pioneering work that paved the way for eventual parity. But, scarred by his abusive background, his life veered and he would not live to taste the liberty he initiated. Trawling archives, tracing and speaking to many people who knew Wells, including the only interview his partner has ever given, this book uncovers the man and the times. ungekürzt. Language: English. Jadoo , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 401min
The first book by the author of The Mothman Prophecies. Someone, we know not who, once called Jadoo "the greatest book ever written on the black magic of the Orient." But we do not know if there will again be another book like it. Jadoo, a Hindi word meaning "black magic", captures a world that is now lost to us - the strange, dark, mysterious world that was once called the "Orient". This story of a real-life Indiana Jones of the 1950s named John Keel contains everything but a trip to Venus in a flying saucer - a subject our newsman/explorer would become famous for a decade later. In Egypt, the fearless Keel was cursed by a mummy and befriended members of a strange snake-charming cult. In Iraq, he played Russian roulette with a notorious desert bandit and lived among the Yezidi devil-worshippers. Later, in India, he was buried alive and discovered the secret of the Indian rope trick, which he then performed for incredulous reporters in New Delhi. And in a riveting finale, he chased the Abominable Snowman through the little known Himalayan kingdom of Sikkim before being unceremoniously booted out of Singapore for being "an undesirable alien"."One of the most traveled and imaginative raconteurs since Baron Munchausen." (San Francisco Examiner)"Here is a fireside adventure with a chill in it." (Buffalo Evening News)“A fabulous tour of Egypt, the Middle East, India, and Tibet." (Hartford Times)"A combination of cliff-hanging experiences with serious probing for the bizarre, the secretive, and the enigmatic." (Kirkus)Born on March 25, 1930, in Hornell, New York, John A. Keel was keenly interested in magic and writing from an early age. After serving in the US Army during the Korean War on the staff of the American Forces Network in Frankfurt, Germany, he worked as a foreign radio correspondent in Paris, Berlin, Rome, and Egypt. Then, in 1954, he gave up his day job and ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Clay Lomakayu. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/133255/bk_acx0_133255_sample.mp3. Beastie Boys Book
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A panoramic experience that tells the story of Beastie Boys, a book as unique as the band itself-by band members ADROCK and Mike D, with contributions from Amy Poehler, Colson Whitehead, Wes Anderson, Luc Sante, and more. The inspiration for the Emmy-nominated Apple TV+ "live documentary" Beastie Boys Story, directed by Spike Jonze NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Rolling Stone • The Guardian • Paste Formed as a New York City hardcore band in 1981, Beastie Boys struck an unlikely path to global hip hop superstardom. Here is their story, told for the first time in the words of the band. Adam "ADROCK" Horovitz and Michael "Mike D" Diamond offer revealing and very funny accounts of their transition from teenage punks to budding rappers; their early collaboration with Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin; the debut album that became the first hip hop record ever to hit #1, Licensed to Ill-and the album's messy fallout as the band broke with Def Jam; their move to Los Angeles and rebirth with the genre-defying masterpiece Paul's Boutique; their evolution as musicians and social activists over the course of the classic albums Check Your Head, Ill Communication, and Hello Nasty and the Tibetan Freedom Concert benefits conceived by the late Adam "MCA" Yauch; and more. For more than thirty years, this band has had an inescapable and indelible influence on popular culture. With a style as distinctive and eclectic as a Beastie Boys album, Beastie Boys Book upends the typical music memoir. Alongside the band narrative you will find rare photos, original illustrations, a cookbook by chef Roy Choi, a graphic novel, a map of Beastie Boys' New York, mixtape playlists, pieces by guest contributors, and many more surprises. Praise for Beastie Boys Book "A fascinating, generous book with portraits and detail that float by in bursts of color . . . As with [the band's] records, the book's structure is a lyrical three-man weave. . . . Diamond's voice is lapidary, droll. Horovitz comes on like a borscht belt comedian, but beneath that he is urgent, incredulous, kind of vulnerable. . . . Friendship is the book's subject as much as music, fame and New York."-The New York Times Book Review "Wild, moving . . . resembles a Beastie Boys LP in its wild variety of styles."-Rolling Stone- Shop: buecher
