Medientheorien reflektieren auf die Geschichte der Kulturen und ihrer Technologien. Als Zweig der Philosophie werfen sie die Frage nach den medialen Bedingungen von Bewusstsein, Erkenntnis, Handeln und Bedeutung auf. Im Anschluss an eine allgemeine Bestimmung des "Medialen" und seiner Relevanz für Kulturtheorien geht der Band in seinem zweiten - geschichtlichen - Teil zunächst von einer "Archäologie" des Medienbegriffs aus und stellt früheste Theoriebildungen bei Platon und in der antiken Stoa vor, um dann Spuren medientheoretischer Reflexion von Herder bis Nietzsche aufzulesen. Desweiteren werden die "Klassiker" der Medientheorie in den 20er und 30er Jahren (Freud, Brecht, Benjamin, Parsons, Dewey) sowie die anthropologisch orientierte Medientheorie der Kanadische Schule in den 50er und 60er Jahren (Innis, Goody, McLuhan) dargestellt. Sie bilden in einem weiteren Teil die Grundlage der Rekonstruktuion systematischer Medientheorien jüngeren Datums (Baudrillard, Virilio, Flusser, Kittler). In einem vierten Teil widmet sich der Band schließlich den eigentlichenMedienphilosophien, wie sie sich von Wittgenstein, Heidegger, Luhmann und Derrida her ausbuchstabieren lassen, und stellt am Ende das Konzept einer "negativen Medientheorie" vor.
