Empowering the People (eBook, ePUB)
In this innovative study, Horsley builds on his earlier works concerning the problematic and misleading categories of "magic" and "miracle" to examine in-depth the meaning and importance of the narratives of healing and exorcism in the Gospels. Incorporating his work on oral performance and turning to important works in medical anthropology, a new image emerges of how these narratives help us re-evaluate Jesus's place in first-century Galilee and Judea. In his exorcisms and healings, Jesus-in-interaction was empowering the villagers in their struggles for renewal of personal and communal dignity in resistance to invasive Roman rule.- Shop: buecher

The True Cross and the Spear of Destiny: The History and Legacy of the Most Important Relics of Christianity , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 78min
That Jesus of Nazareth (ca. 4 BC-30 CE) was crucified is the closest to a historical fact anyone can say about him. Biblical scholars have spent centuries debating the details of what Jesus did and said, but this crude fact - that Jesus suffered capital punishment at the hands of the Roman authority by crucifixion - is accepted by the overwhelming majority of scholars. That there once was a cross where Jesus suffered and died is, therefore, the sequential logical affirmation. Jesus's destiny was not uncommon. Indeed, many other Jews perished were nailed to a wooden cross on the outskirts of Jerusalem (thousands, according to the historian Josephus, who was an eyewitness to the great Jewish revolt against Rome). The cross, a symbol of failure and shame for those who died on it and their families, was considered, from the dawn of Christianity, as the climactic moment in the career of its Messiah: his crucifixion and the ascension to his throne as the true king of the Jews. Hence, once the persecution against Christianity was over, and after enough time had passed, those who were interested, began to search for the truth in the evidence. To be able to look at, contemplate, kiss, or preferably take home a piece of the True Cross of Jesus, became the obsession of believers, kings, and emperors alike. According to Gospel narrative, along with the cross and the Holy Grail, another object has maintained an enigmatic and disturbing presence throughout history: the Spear of Longinus, that of the Roman soldier who pierced Jesus's side. The True Cross was a relic for healing and protection, but the spear, according to legend, was predestined for war and conquest. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Scott Clem. As Christians, we're called to love Jesus more than anyone or anything else. But do we really do this? In Loving Jesus More, Wheaton College President Phil Ryken challenges us to take Jesus's words seriously and think carefully about where our affections lie. Highlighting how God's love for us is the true source of our love for him, Ryken helps us understand the Spirit's important role in producing true, gospel-motivated love in our lives and how our love for Jesus is expressed in the small moments of everyday life, not just in our worship songs or Bible reading. ungekürzt. The Day the Revolution Began: Reconsidering the Meaning of Jesus's Crucifixion , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 904min
The renowned scholar, Anglican bishop, and best-selling author widely considered to be the heir to C. S. Lewis contemplates the central event at the heart of the Christian faith - Jesus' crucifixion - arguing that the Protestant Reformation did not go far enough in transforming our understanding of its meaning. In The Day the Revolution Began, N. T. Wright once again challenges commonly held Christian beliefs, as he did in his acclaimed Surprised by Hope. Demonstrating the rigorous intellect and breathtaking knowledge that have long defined his work, Wright argues that Jesus' death on the cross was not only to absolve us of our sins, it was actually the beginning of a revolution commissioning the Christian faithful to a new vocation - a royal priesthood responsible for restoring and reconciling all of God's creation. Wright argues that Jesus' crucifixion must be understood within the much larger story of God's purposes to bring heaven and earth together. The Day the Revolution Began offers a grand picture of Jesus' sacrifice and its full significance for the Christian faith, inspiring believers with a renewed sense of mission, purpose, and hope and reminding them of the crucial role the Christian faith must play in protecting and shaping the future of the world. ungekürzt. The First Christmas: What the Gospels Really Teach About Jesus's Birth , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 446min
In The First Christmas, two of today's top Jesus scholars, Marcus J. Borg and John Dominic Crossan, join forces to show how history has biased our reading of the nativity story as it appears in the gospels of Matthew and Luke. As they did for Easter in their previous book, The Last Week, here they explore the beginning of the life of Christ, peeling away the sentimentalism that has built up over the last 2,000 years around this most well known of all stories to reveal the truth of what the gospels actually say. Borg and Crossan help us to see this well-known narrative afresh by answering the question, "What do these stories mean?" in the context of both the first century and the 21st century. They successfully show that the Christmas story, read in its original context, is far richer and more challenging than people imagine. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: John Pruden.
