All hail the jubilant return of the redoubtable Amelia Peabody! The prospects for the 1907 archaeological season in Egypt seem fairly dull to Amelia Peabody. Manny Ansar and Iyad Ag Ghali had little in common - one was a politically connected intellectual, the other a rebel waging war on behalf of his nomadic people in the middle of the Sahara. They did share one thing, though: a passion for Mali's desert blues, a haunting mix of traditional music infused with the influence of Elvis Presley, Bob Marley, and Jimi Hendrix. The Festival in the Desert was born out of that shared passion. A grand spectacle in Mali's desolate dunes, the festival attracted some of the most famous musicians in the world, including Bono, Jimmy Buffet, and Robert Plant. But as the music flourished, the friendship turned to enmity. Ghali, who once openly scoffed at religious piety, succumbed to the pull of radical Islam. Ansar, who couldn't fathom his friend's transformation, maintained the festival in the face of increasing threats of deadly violence. In The Desert Blues, veteran foreign correspondent Joshua Hammer lays bare the longing at the heart of Mali's legendary sound, and brings to life the jubilant possibility the festival represented and the deadly drama that ripped it all apart. ungekürzt. When Rassie Erasmus took over as coach of the Springboks in 2018, few thought they had a chance of winning the Rugby World Cup. The Boks had slipped to seventh in the world rankings and lost the faith of the rugby-loving public. Less than two years later, jubilant crowds lined the streets of South Africa’s cities to welcome back the victorious team. Sportswriter Lloyd Burnard takes the listener on the thrilling journey of a team that went from no-hopers to world champions. He examines how exactly this turnaround was achieved. Interviews with players, coaches and support staff reveal how the principles of inclusion, openness and focus, as well as careful planning and superb physical conditioning, became the basis for a winning formula. The key roles played by Rassie Erasmus and Siya Kolisi shine through. There were ups and downs along the way: beating the All Blacks in Wellington during the Rugby Championship was a high point, but then came Kolisi’s injury, while in Japan the distractions of a volatile support base sometimes shook the players’ focus. Miracle Men is filled with marvellous anecdotes and sharp insights. It is also inspiring testimony to what can be achieved when a group of South Africans from all backgrounds come together as a team. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Rory Acton Burnell. What do you think about when someone mentions Easter? The Easter Bunny and brightly colored eggs? Wonderful sales on clothing? Special deals in your favorite restaurant? The first Easter two thousand years ago was not celebrated by hordes of people as if it were just another holiday. On this day, Jesus of Nazareth found his disciples frightened and tearful. The followers of Jesus Christ were recovering from the sadness that they had felt at the horrific manner in which Jesus had been beaten, humiliated, and crucified. Jesus' disciples were afraid for their own lives, having seen their Lord crucified on the cross like a common criminal who deserved the death penalty. The enemies of Christ were jubilant because they thought that they had wiped out the Jesus movement, the nascent Christianity that had emerged in the land. Shouts of "Crucify Him! Crucify Him" still rang in the ears of many. Who would have thought that the first Easter would become so central in the history of the world? Some Christians have willingly given up their lives to celebrate the first Easter. In this collection of poems, H. C. Kim focuses on the immediate events leading up to the first Easter and ponders the resurrection message. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dan McGowan. In Denmark, a very prosperous and popular ruler, King Hrothgar, has built a large mead hall and encouraged all of his soldiers to be jubilant and merry. The commotion from the festivities has greatly upset a horrible demon, Grendel, who lives in the swamp. Every night the demon terrorizes the community forcing the Danes to suffer at the hand of the beast for many years until a young Geatish warrior, Beowulf, hears of the plight King Hrothgar has endured. Beowulf agrees to kill the Grendel, as repayment of a debt owed by his father to the King, who gratefully accepts. King Hrothgar throws a feast in Beowulf's honor that is interrupted by Grendel. A battle ensues between the monster and an unarmed Beowulf who is much stronger than the beast. Beowulf rips Grendel's arm off, sending him back into the swamp to die making Beowulf a hero. Grendel's mother is the swamp hag, and upon finding her son's body, goes to the town seeking retribution. Beowulf, accompanied by soldiers, chases the creature back to the swamps where he dives into the water down to the hag's lair. He carries with him a powerful weapon forged for a giant and ends up victorious against the swamp hag. Beowulf's story goes on to describe a life where he ruled Geat for 50 years and was beloved by his people forever. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: David McCallion.
