Prokofiev Mozart Beethoven & Debussy
The Kobayashi Siepkes Duo have been noted by audiences for their thoughtful and fluent chamber music partnership. The repertoire found on the CD reflects their thoughtful approach to a wide range of styles and compositional aesthetics: the Mozart and Beethoven sonatas highlight the markedly contrasting styles of two representatives of the First Viennese School. These are juxtaposed with two contemporaries of the 20th-century, Prokofiev and Debussy, whose highly individual approaches to tonality became significant influences on the direction 20th century music would take. Mozart and Beethoven were two very different personalities of the First Viennese School of composition. They both wrote within the framework of the High Classical Style, but used it's vocabulary to different effect. Mozart's lyricism and long melodies lend his K301 sonata an ease and fluency which is in stark contrast to the driving rhythm, erratic dynamic shifts, and fragmented motifs in Beethoven's Violin Sonata no.4. Prokofiev's early work, the Five Melodies for Violin and Piano, written at the time he lived in Paris, are influenced by the French musical direction headed by Debussy.
