    La storia di Montale al Vieusseux, nota soprattutto per il licenziamento ‘politico’ del 1938, meritava di essere ricostruita passo per passo, fino al suo rientro come Commissario del Comitato toscano di liberazione nazionale, nel 1945. Per colmare questa lacuna Chiara De Vecchis ha svolto un grande lavoro di scavo [...]. Al centro la storia della biblioteca, ricostruita con la ricca documentazione proveniente dall’Archivio storico del Gabinetto [...] e fonti specifiche: libro matricola, cataloghi, bollettino delle novità ecc. Una messe di dati sapientemente raccordati con quanto emerge dagli scambi epistolari di Montale e dalle sue stesse dichiarazioni rilasciate nel tempo, spesso ambigue e difficili da interpretare. Ne è emerso un quadro composito, in cui ha preso forma la fisionomia di un bibliotecario riluttante, che tuttavia rivendica orgogliosamente il proprio ruolo quando polemizza con Achille Campanile nel 1935 («sono il direttore della biblioteca circolante che dà più libri a prestito in Italia») e non dimentica la sua antica professione quando riceve il Premio Nobel: «Sono stato anche bibliotecario».
