Wayward (eBook, ePUB)
'Magical and transporting . . . Wayward proves that Bunyan has lived the best possible life, on her own idiosyncratic terms'Maggie O'Farrell'A gorgeous account of outsiderness and survival: a map of how to live outside the boundaries and of striving for an authentic artistic life. A quietly defiant and moving work' Sinéad Gleeson'An epic in miniature . . . I loved - and lived - every sentence' Benjamin MyersIn 1968, Vashti Bunyan gave up everything and everybody she knew in London to take to the road with a horse, wagon, dog, guitar and her then partner. They made the long journey up to the Outer Hebrides in an odyssey of discovery and heartbreak, full of the joy of freedom and the trudge of everyday reality, sleeping in the woods, fighting freezing winters and homelessness. Along the way, Vashti wrote the songs that would lead to the recording of her 1970's album Just Another Diamond Day, the lilting lyrics and guitar conveying innocent wonder at the world around her, whilst disguising a deeper turmoil under the surface. From an unconventional childhood in post-war London, to a fledgling career in mid-sixties pop - recording a single written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards - to the despair and failure to make any headway with her own songs, she rejected the music world altogether and left it all behind. After retreating to a musical wilderness for thirty years, the rediscovery of her recordings in 2000 brought Vashti a second chance to write, record and perform once more. One of the great hippie myths of the 1960s, Wayward, Just Another Life to Live, rewrites the narrative of a barefoot girl on the road to describe a life lived at full tilt from the first, revealing what it means to change course and her emotional struggle, learning to take back control of her own life.- Shop: buecher

Joyeux Noel-French Christmas Music
In the popular imagination, French Christmas music may now be almost wholly defined by Minuit, chrétiens and favourites such as Petit Papa Noël covered by Charles Aznavour and Johnny Hallyday, but the festive season was marked in the Baroque era with great merriment, principally through the genre of Noëls: sacred collections of secular songs, celebrating often vernacular aspects of the Nativity such as the Shepherds, especially by giving the occasion to compose in the always popular pastoral vein, in simple keys such as F major and in the lilting siciliano rhythm. Many such Noëls may be enjoyed on this special collection of both choral and instrumental music, concentrating on the High Baroque era. Corrette, Dandrieu and Balbastre all wrote exuberant Noels for organ, Michel Corrette developed the idea further with narrative-led instrumental symphonies, which are collected complete on CD2 and performed by a historically informed ensemble. The collection begins with the Toronto-based Aradia Ensemble. They built their 1999 recording of Marc-Antoine Charpentier around his best-known work, the Messe de Minuit (Midnight Mass). The director Kevin Mallon gave it a specially Canadian flavour by interpolating a version of the French carol with a text in the tribal language of the Huron Indians. 'Colourful performances,' was the original verdict of Gramophone, on which 'the soloists and chorus sing with consistent clarity.' Operatically inclined singers will note the presence in the ensemble of Jane Archibald, who has since become known worldwide as a coloratura soprano of distinction, especially in the role of Zerbinetta in Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos. The final disc of Joyeux Noël is an organ recital, moving through the ages from Dandrieu to the grandest examples of late-Romantic organ masses and Christmas pieces by Franck and Dubois. It's a uniquely compilation, fully annotated, sure to bring a touch of distinction to a festive stocking. A compilation of popular music written for Christmas time by French Baroque and Romantic composers. Presented are the ever popular "Messe de Minuit" by Charpentier, the Six Symphonies de Noël by Michel Corrette, charming and atmospheric depictions of the Christmas story, and a fine selection of Noëls for organ, genre pieces of a pastoral nature, either festive or intimate, by Dandrieu, Balbastre, Boëly, Guilmant, Dubois and Franck. The perfect musical companion for a true "Joyeux Noël"!- Shop: odax

End Times Diner
Backseat Bordello is more than just a good time. It's the official project name for the layered acoustic duo consisting of Danielle Egnew on Vocals / Guitar and Kristen Coyner on Vocals / Guitar, both founding members of power female band Pope Jane. The project was conceived by Coyner, who has spent the last 12 years behind the drums in Pope Jane and was searching for a more expressive outlet for her songwriting, as well as a home for the more folk-adjacent stylings in Egnew's catalogue. Produced and mixed by Danielle Egnew, Backseat Bordello is founded on the signature vocal blend of both Egnew and Coyner set within an intimate setting of carefully woven and orchestrated guitar work by both artists, featuring acoustic slide and lead guitar by Egnew. The eleven song debut CD "End Times Diner" is thoughtful and traveling, reflective of concerns surrounding twenty-first century living. The song "Dashboard Mary", penned by Egnew, chronicles the last moments in a woman's life during her own suicide: "And she cried to Dashboard Mary / Would she make way in the heavens for her kind". The anthem "Rise Up", written by Coyner, reaches out with a universal message of courage to oppressed peoples everywhere from an LGBT perspective: "You must rise up / You must speak out / You must be brave now / You must shout". Though thick with concepts, the album is also peppered with whimsical observations such as "Miraculous", a lilting tune written by Egnew: "Looking up in the Hollywood Hills / She's wearing hundred thousand dollar espadrilles / Stitched together in Chinese mills for a dime a pair, but the brand's a thrill / It's not miraculous/ It's just the way it is". And wrapping the feel of the album is "Blind", the swampy, slide-heavy ode to obsession, authored by Coyner: "You've got me twisting and churning and tossing and turning tonight / Shaking and burning, and yearning but losing the fight / You've been dancing around in my head / I wish I was blind". As track eleven, Egnew and Coyner recorded a cultural favorite, Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah", in one of the most emotive and vocally stunning arrangements to date, ending with a dynamic 32 track layered chorus of Hallelujah that features choral arrangements by Egnew.- Shop: odax

Voice Upon the Mountain
Women in Harmony, a 60-member chorus of women in the Portland, Maine area, has a long tradition of singing out for social, political, and economic equality for women, and for peace, freedom and tolerance for all. The chorus is notable for it's dedication to both musical excellence and social justice. Women in Harmony is committed to supporting the work of women composers, performers, and poets. We have performed pieces by numerous living women composers, including Eleanor Daley, Gwyneth Walker, Ruth Huber, Ysaye Barnwell, Bernice Johnson Reagon, Joan Szymko, and Jenni Brandon, and have commissioned works from Elizabeth Alexander and Erica Quin-Easter, a former Women in Harmony member. We are fortunate to have our own in-house composer, our accompanist, Deana Ingraham Gurney, who has composed and arranged several works specifically for Women in Harmony, including Hymn to the Muse on this CD. Change of Heart- This song embodies the joy that the singers find in singing for a better world. The title of this album comes from a line in Change of Heart : "There's a change of heart/Anytime you join the choir/Be a voice upon the mountain/Or see a fire in the rain." Wood River- This Canadian song embodies that feeling of wonder, expansiveness, and comfort that so many people associate with water. Marie- Here is the heart-warming and funny story, set as a waltz, of a lesbian couple who won a court case allowing them to attend the high-school prom together. Igraj Kolce- We change our vocal style for this Slovenian folk song. Drag Lines- Drag Lines came to us through our director's brother, a union organizer. It tells the story of the effects of the mining practices of big coal companies on the poor families of Appalachia. Wanting Memories- Our cover of this Sweet Honey in the Rock song features our pianist, Deana Ingraham Gurney, on the lowest parts. The writer reflects on the loss of her parents. Weep No More - A wistful adaptation of a stanza of John Keats' Fairy's Song, this song features overlapping vocal parts and showcases our pianist, Deana Ingraham Gurney. How Can I Keep From Singing? This is an a cappella version of this Quaker hymn. The words "how can I keep from singing?" probably encapsulate Women in Harmony's reason for being better than any other phrase, communicating both our passion for singing and the notion that it is through singing that we seek to make the world a better place. Power and Glory- Who can forget this wonderful anthem by Phil Ochs? In J. David Moore's rousing arrangement, listen for a musical quotation of This Land is Your Land. The Lake Isle of Innisfree- A sublime setting of the Yeats poem from the pen of Eleanor Daley, one of Canada's most talented living composers. Song for Peace- A lilting folk song from Canada that encourages us all to leave our differences behind and weather life's trials together. Hymn to the Muse- Pianist Deana Ingraham Gurney created Hymn to the Muse by adapting an arrangement by Layne Redmond of an ancient Greek hymn in praise of Kalliopeia, one of the nine muses of Greek mythology. 1000 Grandmothers- This song depicts the power of grandmothers to effect social change. Bound for Freedom- Our version includes a verse specifically about Women in Harmony: "From the rocky shores of Maine, we will lift our voices clear/Singing songs that we believe in, about truths we hold so dear." Big Dogs, Music, and Wild, Wild Women- This popular song by Ruth Huber features an infectiously happy piano solo in the middle. How Do I Love Thee? A surprising and jazzy setting based on the Elizabeth Barrett Browning poem, full of doo-wahs and doo-bah-doohs.- Shop: odax

No Strings Attached
BELLAJANE are a four piece band from Dublin consisting of SarahJane (Vocals/Piano), Shane Holly (Guitar), Graham Heaney (Bass) and Dennis Cassidy (Drums). They met whilst attending the New Park School of Jazz in Dublin in 2008. Lilting female vocals combined with challenging arrangements and rhythmic shifts have seen BellaJane compared to Tori Amos, Fiona Apple and Joan As Policewoman. Their sound is described as quirky pop that "lulls the listener, sucks them in.. then switches the dynamic just as you start to get comfortable" (Connected Magazine) as well as having the ability to "effortlessly veering from sultry, Parisian cabaret inspired vignettes to introspective, lush takes on loss and uncertainty, all the while keeping ears focused and toes tapping." (Death Via Satellite Press release) They were also featured in The Ticket as Jim Carroll's ones to watch, with him saying: 'BellaJane push all the right buttons with their well-appointed indie-rock with folk frills.'- Shop: odax

Peaceful World
One of the most frequent questions I've been asked in recent years is, "When will the new CD be out?" Well, here it is and thank you for your patience. Peaceful World is a labor of love that has been a long time coming. It started as a simple idea from a good friend that grew to include songs with some of the strongest messages I have ever written. Gandhi said, "We must be the change we wish to see in the world." But, sometimes we cannot be the change. Sometimes all we can do is speak out for what we feel is right. The songs I wrote for Peaceful World speak of peace, love and justice. Sometimes the message is abrasive and strong. At other times, the lilting lyrics will soothe and caress. My hope is that in these songs you find inspiration for a peaceful world of your own. As always, my sincerest appreciation for purchasing this CD and supporting independent music. Peace, Steven.- Shop: odax

Tony Tobin Plays Scarlatti Mozart & Brahms
Domenico Scarlatti wrote over 600 keyboard sonatas. Many styles and moods are represented in such a vast repertoire. The three on this recording represent a range of emotions, from the bright E-Major (L.430) with it's momentum building triplets, to the pensive g-minor (L.128) which transports the listener to another world, and finally the virtuosic and well-known d-minor (L. 422). A trip through the Lukmanier Pass in Switzerland and on to the Valle Verzasca inspired me to program these Sonatas as I felt the history and soul of a bygone Italian era in the stone bridges, churches, and rugged alpine landscapes. Mozart's Piano Sonata in c-minor K. 457, composed in Vienna in 1784, was published in 1785 with the Fantasy in c-minor K. 475. Both are dramatic works and among the only minor key solo works Mozart wrote for piano, including the popular a-minor Sonata K. 310. Mozart carefully selected the keys of his pieces and c-minor is considered especially expressive. Strong contrasts of emotion and dynamics in the CPE Bach style of 'Sturm und Drang' characterize both the Sonata and Fantasy. They are among my favorite works to perform in recital due to the depth of emotion possible. Brahms' Intermezzi Opus 117 were written in 1892, the year Brahms lost a close friend and his sister Elise. Brahms said the third, in c#-minor was 'the lullaby of all my grief.' All three works are pensive and introspective and suggest elements of the cycle of life. The first Intermezzo, in Eb-Major Andante moderato, alludes to sleep and youth with a line from a famous Scottish lullaby quoted on the first page: 'Balou, my boy, lie still and sleep, it grieves me sore to hear thee weep.' The mood is calm although the middle section alludes to underlying tension. The second Intermezzo, in b-flat-minor Andante non troppo e con molta espressione, features a rather sad and lilting melody that suggest a struggle with life, with the memories of the past, or with the knowledge that life will end and cross over to another realm. The last section explodes with the struggle and restatements of the them until the tragedy and weight of b-flat-minor emerges with a slowly rising arpeggiation that reveal the tonic, fifth and then the minor 3rd to suggest defeat and sadness. The 3rd Intermezzo, in c#-minor Andante con Moto, starts with a glimmer of hope with the motion of the opening 8th notes and the rising, striving melodic line. The second section evolves with a sighing repeated motive that adds tension to the motion. Sections repeated themselves highlight the instability and uncertainty until a cryptic transition, with fermata pauses, chromatically leads the melody back to a re-harmonized opening theme. Repetition seems to signal defeat as the piece ends with one last theme restatement and an affirmation of the c#-sharp minor tonic with spare chord voicings. Life is not an easy proposition and death may not always provide the dead or the survivors with the peace they hope for. This Opus 117 set is among Brahms' most personal solo piano works.- Shop: odax
