Misogyny is a hot topic, yet it's often misunderstood. What is misogyny, exactly? Who deserves to be called a misogynist? How does misogyny contrast with sexism, and why is it prone to persist - or increase - even when sexist gender roles are waning? This book is an exploration of misogyny in public life and politics by the moral philosopher and writer Kate Manne. It argues that misogyny should not be understood primarily in terms of the hatred or hostility some men feel toward all or most women. Rather, it's primarily about controlling, policing, punishing, and exiling the "bad" women who challenge male dominance. And it's compatible with rewarding "the good ones," and singling out other women to serve as warnings to those who are out of order. It's also common for women to serve as scapegoats, be burned as witches, and treated as pariahs.  Manne examines recent and current events such as the Isla Vista killings by Elliot Rodger, the case of the convicted serial rapist Daniel Holtzclaw, who preyed on African-American women as a police officer in Oklahoma City, Rush Limbaugh's diatribe against Sandra Fluke, and the "misogyny speech" of Julia Gillard, then Prime Minister of Australia, which went viral on YouTube. The book shows how these events, among others, set the stage for the 2016 US presidential election. Not only was the misogyny leveled against Hillary Clinton predictable in both quantity and quality, Manne argues it was predictable that many people would be prepared to forgive and forget regarding Donald Trump's history of sexual assault and harassment. For this, Manne argues, is misogyny's oft-overlooked and equally pernicious underbelly: exonerating or showing "himpathy" for the comparatively privileged men who dominate, threaten, and silence women. ungekürzt. On a bright day at the Epsom Derby, 4 June 1913, Emily Wilding Davison was hit by the king’s horse in one of the defining moments of the fight for women’s suffrage - what became known as feminism’s first wave. The second wave arose in the late-1960s, activists campaigning tirelessly for women’s liberation, organising around a wildly ambitious slate of issues - a struggle their daughters continued in the third wave that blossomed in the early 1990s. Now, 100 years on from the campaign for the vote, 50 years since the very first murmurs of the second wave movement, a new tide of feminist voices is rising. Scattered across the world, campaigning online as well as marching in the streets, women are making themselves heard in irresistible fashion. They’re demonstrating against media sexism, domestic violence, and sexual assault, fighting for equal pay, affordable childcare, and abortion rights. Thousands are sharing their experiences through the Everyday Sexism project, marching in Slutwalk protests, joining demonstrations in the wake of the Delhi gang rape, challenging misogynist behaviour and language, online crusaders and ordinary people organising for the freedom of women everywhere. Kira Cochrane’s All the Rebel Women is an irrepressible exploration of today’s feminist landscape, asking how far we have come over the past century - and how far there still is to go. Whether engaging with leading feminists, describing the fight against rape culture or bringing immediate, powerful life to vital theories such as intersectionality, All the Rebel Women binds everything together into one unstoppable idea. This is modern feminism. This is the fourth wave. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Anna Parker-Naples. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/adbl/019365/bk_adbl_019365_sample.mp3. Ever wonder how politics turned into a take-no-prisoners blood sport? The New York Times best-selling author of Stonewalled pulls back the curtain on the shady world of opposition research and reveals the dirty tricks those in power use to influence your opinions. Behind most major political stories in the modern era, there is an agenda - an effort by opposition researchers, spin doctors, and outside interests to destroy an idea or a person. The tactic they use is the Smear. Every day, Americans are influenced by the Smear without knowing it. Paid forces cleverly shape virtually every image you cross. Maybe you read that Donald Trump is a racist misogynist or saw someone on the news mocking the Bernie Sanders campaign. The trick of the Smear is that it is often based on some shred of truth, but these media-driven "hit pieces" are designed to obscure the truth. Success hinges on the Smear artist's ability to remain invisible, to make it seem as if their work is neither calculated nor scripted. It must appear to be precisely what it is not. Veteran journalist Sharyl Attkisson has witnessed this practice firsthand. After years of being pitched hit jobs and puff pieces, she's an expert at detecting Smear campaigns. Now, the hard-hitting investigative reporter shares her inside knowledge, revealing how the Smear takes shape and who its perpetrators are - including Clinton confidant Sidney Blumenthal and, most influential of all, "right-wing assassin turned left-wing assassin" (National Review) political operative David Brock and his Media Matters for America empire. Attkisson exposes the diabolical tactics of Smear artists and their outrageous access to the biggest names in political media - operatives who are corrupting the political process and discouraging widespread citizen involvement in our democracy. ungekürzt. 'Frances Wilson writes books that blow your hair back. She makes Lawrence live and breathe, annoy and captivate you . she conjures the past with such clarity and wit and flair that it feels utterly present' Katherine Rundell 'A brilliantly unconventional biography, passionately researched and written with a wild, playful energy' Richard Holmes D H Lawrence is no longer censored, but he is still on trial - and we are still unsure what the verdict should be, or even how to describe him. History has remembered him, and not always flatteringly, as a nostalgic modernist, a sexually liberator, a misogynist, a critic of genius, and a sceptic who told us not to look in his novels for 'the old stable ego', yet pioneered the genre we now celebrate as auto-fiction. But where is the real Lawrence in all of this, and how - one hundred years after the publication of Women in Love - can we hear his voice above the noise? Delving into the memoirs of those who both loved and hated him most, Burning Man follows Lawrence from the peninsular underworld of Cornwall in 1915 to post-war Italy to the mountains of New Mexico, and traces the author's footsteps through the pages of his lesser known work. Wilson's triptych of biographical tales present a complex, courageous and often comic fugitive, careering around a world in the grip of apocalypse, in search of utopia; and, in bringing the true Lawrence into sharp focus, shows how he speaks to us now more than ever. 'No biography of Lawrence that I have read comes close to Burning Man' Ferdinand Mount, author of Kiss Myself Goodbye 'The most original voice in life-writing today' Lucasta Miller, author of Keats

A captivating biography of America's first female tycoon, Hetty Green, the iconoclast who forged one of the greatest fortunes of her time. No woman in the Gilded Age made as much money as Hetty Green. At the time of her death in 1916, she was worth at least 100 million dollars, equal to more than 2 billion dollars today. A strong believer in women being financially independent, she offered valuable lessons for the present times. Abandoned at birth by her neurotic mother, scorned by her misogynist father, Hetty set out as a child to prove her value. Following the simple rules of her wealthy Quaker father, she successfully invested her money and along the way proved to herself that she was wealthy and therefore worthy. Never losing faith in America's potential, she ignored the herd mentality and took advantage of financial panics and crises. When everyone else was selling, she bought railroads, real estate, and government bonds. And when everyone was buying and borrowing, she put her money into cash and earned safe returns on her dollars. Men mocked her and women scoffed at her frugal ways, but she turned her back and piled up her earnings, amassing a fortune that supported businesses, churches, municipalities, and even the city of New York itself. She relished a challenge. When her aunt died and did not leave Hetty the fortune she expected, she plunged into a groundbreaking lawsuit that still resonates in law schools and courts. When her husband defied her and sank her money on his own risky interests, she threw him out and, marching down to Wall Street, quickly made up the loss. Her independence, outspokenness, and disdain for the upper crust earned her a reputation for harshness that endured for decades. Newspapers kept her in the headlines, linking her name with witches and miscreants. Yet those who knew her admired her warmth, her wisdom, and her wit. John Moses' comedy is definitely on the edge, and the edge is right between evil genius and uncontrollable laughter. (Monsters and Critics) John Moses has been delightfully offending audiences throughout the United States, Canada, and the UK for more than 10 years. John is always a standout at comedy festivals, including The Boston Comedy Festival, The Asheville Comedy Festival, and the Dark Comedy Festival in Toronto, where he roasted porn legend Ron Jeremy. He released his debut album, On the Edge, on Uproar in 2012. It was voted one of Laughspin.com's 10 Best Comedy Albums of 2012 and given their dubious distinction as The One Album from 2012 You Should Get by a Comedian You Probably Never Heard Of. It is still in regular rotation on Sirius XM's RawDog, The Foxxhole, and Canada Laughs. In 2013 John became an immediate favorite on AXS TV's Gotham Comedy Live and was featured in their special, Best of Season One. In 2015 he made his second appearance on Gotham Comedy Live and received high praise from the show's host, the iconic Dom Irrera. In Upper Middle Trash, John talks about his loving, dysfunctional family; heroic tales of alcoholism; being a married product of divorce; revenge; and debauchery, to name just a few topics. The product of a "nice guy" dad and an alcoholic mother who, "when she drinks...can say some of the most hateful things ever uttered," John says. "I take after my mother. I'm a bit of a misogynist. Alcoholism and mental illness run rampant in my family on both sides. I'm part Native. That doesn't help." He continues, "I did all right in school up until my third year of college, when all I did was drink, smoke weed, pop pills, and snort lines. In the last class I attended, the chalkboard was waving in and out. I've been in a lot of fights, probably around thirty." As you might imagine, John's comedy is not for the faint of heart. Not a single country anywhere in the world has achieved gender equality. In more than a few countries, progress for women has stalled or is reversing. Voters in the United States chose a misogynist over a female candidate for president. Yet in many of these countries, the majority of politicians and business leaders profess to believe in gender equality - as well they might. One report predicts a boost to global GDP of £8.3 trillion by 2025 simply by making faster progress towards narrowing the gender gap. Researchers point to many other potential benefits, too, not least in improved relations between the sexes and a healthier, more peaceful planet. If gender equality promises benefits not just to women but to everyone, why aren't we embracing it? And how can we speed the pace of change? Fewer than 9 percent of world leaders are female, but the few women who have broken through include towering figures such as Angela Merkel. Could 50-foot women save the day? These questions have gripped journalist and author Catherine Mayer since she accidentally founded the Women's Equality Party in March 2015 and watched it grow in months from an idea to a vibrant political force with more than 70 branches across the UK. In Attack of The Fifty Foot Women, her insightful, revelatory, often hilarious and hugely inspiring book, she tackles those questions and many more, sharing inside views and experiences from building a party and bringing together global research with analyses and interviews based on her own far-flung research. And she goes further. Campaigning for the Women's Equality Party ahead of elections in May 2016, she noticed that many people found it hard, in the absence of any real-life examples, to envisage a gender-equal world. So she takes us there, to the place she calls Equalia. What is it like? Does gender equality make for a society that is more equal in other ways, too? Who does the low-paid jobs? How does gender express itse ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Tanya Moodie. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/hcuk/002767/bk_hcuk_002767_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.

    * RLJ skyrocketed to fame overnight after her performance of "Chuck E's in Love" on Saturday Night Live. Chuck E went on to top the US Billboard Hot 100 at #4 and RLJ was dubbed the "Duchess of Coolsville" by Time magazine * Other iconic hits include Young Blood (US #40), and The Horses (which featured in Jerry Maguire). RLJ has been featured twice on the cover of Rolling Stone and been profiled in the New York Times, Vanity Fair, and Mojo Magazine among others, and was listed at number 30 on VH1's 100 Greatest Women in Rock & Roll * This is no holds barred account of the life of one of rock's hardest working women in her own words; from her nomadic childhood as the granddaughter of vaudevillian performers, her father's abandonment and her years as a teenage runaway, her beginnings at the Troubador club and the 70s LA jazz pop scene, her tumultuous (and private) relationship with Tom Waits, her overnight rise to stardom after performing Chuck E on Saturday Night Live, her battle with drugs, and longevity as a woman in rock * Beautiful, untold account of her relationship with Tom Waits: "Tom Waits and I were like Mary Astor and Humphrey Bogart in Across the Pacific. We found ourselves alone on a steamer headed to some port or another; it didn't matter to us. He was a worn and troubled traveler from another life, and I was an innocent and mysterious impulse, a woman out of place, holding my ground, beat for beat. I was only his..." * Details with candor the misogynist "boys club" world of rock and her life as a strong woman and mother in it. Brilliant anecdotes about the industry including her collaborations with Bruce Springsteen, Dr John, Lyle Lovett, and Steely Dan to name but a few * She is one of few women performers of her generation-including Bonnie Rait and Emmylou Harris-who still works, tours, and releases new material. She inspired and paved the way for artists such as Sheryl Crow, Susanne Vega, Tori Amos, and Jewel to follow * Will appeal to fans of music memoirs like Patti Smith's Just Kids, Bob Dylan's Chronicles, Keith Richard's Life, Carly Simon's Boys in the Trees, Rodney Crowell's Chinaberry Sidewalks, and Bruce Springsteen's Born To Run
