After months of maternity leave, tough-talking Espoo police detective Maria Kallio is ready to return to work. But before assuming her new post as head of the Violent Crime Unit, she vacations with her husband and daughter on the island of Rödskär. There Kallio learns that, one year earlier, her ex-boyfriend Harri had mysteriously fallen to his death from the isle's steep and treacherous cliffs. On the anniversary of that event, Harri's boss, the CEO of an allegedly nontoxic paint company, loses his life on those very same rocks. In light of such a coincidence, Kallio searches for the link between these two tragedies and is soon convinced that they weren't accidents - they were murders. As the Finnish nights grow longer, so too does the list of suspects. Was the CEO's disillusioned wife involved? His environmental-activist son? Or perhaps his rebellious daughter? Or might the culprit be his half-brother, an adventurous sailor whom Kallio finds altogether a little too intriguing? From internationally bestselling Finnish author Leena Lehtolainen comes the sixth book of the gripping Maria Kallio Mystery series. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Amy Rubinate. Preview: The Truth About Cancer by health advocate Ty Bollinger is a nonfiction book that details the little-known history of the modern medical establishment and how its profit-driven agenda forever altered the course of medicine, particularly the treatment of cancer. Bollinger has studied alternative and nontoxic treatments for cancer, as well as cancer prevention tactics, as part of an effort to educate the public and especially cancer patients about how to combat cancer without harsh drugs or procedures. Cancer is a chronic disease that occurs when healthy cells come into contact with carcinogens or other toxins and then become malignant. The formation of cancer cells is a normal occurrence, and the immune system is naturally designed to ward off the growth of these mutated cells before they cause disease or form tumors. But the immune system itself can be compromised, possibly because of overexposure to environmental toxins or lack of proper nutrients..... To make essential oils, oil need to be extracted from plants. This can be done through expression and distillation. Expression: Also referred as cold pressing, expression is a method used to extract oil from citrus fruits like lime, orange, tangerine, lemon, and bergamot. In the past, expression didn't require any sort of tool except for a sponge. After soaking the citrus rind or zest, it is repeatedly pressed against the sponge to absorb the oil. The sponge is then squeezed over a container to catch the oil, which is allowed to separate from its juices. The oil is siphoned off and bottled after a few hours. A modern type of expression involves using a blender-like device that's equipped with spikes. Once the citrus zest, rind, or peel is placed in the device, it rotates, prods, and pricks the citrus until the oils are released. Oil are collected at the bottom of the device and bottled immediately. Distillation: Most essential oils are extracted using the distillation process. In this process, the plant part is placed on a grid that's inside a container called a still. The still is then sealed. Water, steam, or a water and steam combination swirl inside the sealed still and slowly break down the plant, releasing its volatile components and turn them into steam. These components then rise up and collect in the condenser. Once the condenser is cool, the components revert back to liquid form and are collected in a separate container. Once the essential oil separates from the water, it is siphoned off and stored. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Millian Quinteros. A masterful synchronization of history and cutting-edge science shines new light on humanity's darkest diagnosis. In the wake of the Cancer Genome Atlas project's failure to provide a legible road map to a cure for cancer, science writer Travis Christofferson illuminates a promising blend of old and new perspectives on the disease. Tripping Over the Truth follows the story of cancer's proposed metabolic origin from the vaunted halls of the German scientific golden age to modern laboratories around the world. The listener is taken on a journey through time and science that results in an unlikely connecting of the dots, with profound therapeutic implications. Transporting us on a rich narrative of humanity's struggle to understand the cellular events that conspire to form malignancy, it flows like a detective novel, full of twists and cover-ups, blind alleys and striking moments of discovery by men and women with uncommon vision, grit, and fortitude. Ultimately we arrive at a conclusion that challenges everything we thought we knew about the disease, suggesting the reason for the failed war against cancer stems from a flawed paradigm that categorizes cancer as an exclusively genetic disease. For anyone affected by this terrifying disease and the physicians who struggle to treat it, Tripping Over the Truth provides a fresh and hopeful perspective. It explores the new and exciting nontoxic therapies born from the emerging metabolic theory of cancer - therapies that may one day prove to be a turning point in the struggle against our ancient enemy. We are shown how the metabolic theory redraws the battle map, directing researchers to approach cancer treatment from a different angle, framing it more like a gentle rehabilitation than like all-out combat. ungekürzt.
