Actor Christopher Walken, Reverend Louis Sheldon and Winnie Stachelberg, political director of the Human Rights Campaign on this edition of Fresh Air. Christopher Walken got his start in the business as a tap-dancing kid and went on to play some of the most menacingly evil characters around. His films include At Close Range, The Comfort of Strangers, King of New York, The Dead Zone, and Annie Hall (in which he played Annie's creepy brother who had an impulse to drive his car into oncoming traffic.) His new film is The Opportunists. In light of the news that Republican V.P. candidate Dick Cheney's daughter is a lesbian, Fresh Air speaks to two people close to the issue. First: Reverend Louis Sheldon, chairman and founder of the Coalition for Traditional Values. The Coalition for Traditional Values is the largest non-denominational grassroots church lobby in America, founded in 1980. Then, Terry Gross talks with Winnie Stachelberg, political director of the Human Rights Campaign, the largest national lesbian and gay political organization in the United States. 1919. The eyes of the world are on Paris, where statesmen, diplomats and politicians have gathered to discuss the fate of half the world’s nations in the aftermath of the cataclysm that was the Great War. A horde of journalists, spies and opportunists have also gathered in the city, and the last thing the British diplomatic community needs at such a time is the mysterious death of a senior member of their delegation. So, when Sir Henry Maxted falls from the roof of his mistress’ apartment building in unexplained circumstances, their first instinct is to suppress all suspicious aspects of the event.  But Sir Henry’s son, ex Royal Flying Corps ace James ‘Max’ Maxted, has other ideas. He resolves to find out how and why his father died - even if this means disturbing the impression of harmonious calm which the negotiating teams have worked so hard to maintain. In a city where countries are jostling for position at the crossroads of history and the stakes could hardly be higher, it is difficult to tell who is a friend and who a foe.And Max will soon discover just how much he needs friends, as his search for the truth sucks him into the dark heart of a seemingly impenetrable mystery. ungekürzt. The number-one New York Times best seller and Pulitzer Prize winner Allen Drury's Advise and Consent is one of the high points of 20th century literature. It is a seminal work of political fiction, as relevant today as when it was first published. A sweeping tale of corruption and ambition cuts across the landscape of Washington, DC, with the breadth and realism only an astute observer and insider can convey. Allen Drury has penetrated the world's stormiest political battleground and the smoke-filled committee rooms of the United States Senate to reveal the bitter conflicts set in motion when the president calls upon the senate to confirm his controversial choice for secretary of state. This novel is a true epic, showing in fascinating detail the minds and motives of the statesmen, the opportunists, the idealists. From a Senate old-timer's wily maneuvers, a vicious demagogue's blistering smear campaign, and the ugly personal jealousies that turn a highly qualified candidate into a public spectacle to the tragic martyrdom of a presidential aspirant who refuses to sacrifice his principles for his career, never has there been a more revealing picture of Washington's intricate political, diplomatic, and social worlds. Advise and Consent is a timeless story with clear echoes of today's headlines. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Allan Robertson. We can't live without the internet, but we know very little about the secret industry that keeps the wheels of modern life turning; the data centre industry. This is where the internet lives. This is the industry that has the power to make or break our connections. Cloaked in mystery, with secrets, scandals, and bloodthirsty boardroom battles raging behind the scenes, this is where the magic happens.Michael Tobin OBE has been at the forefront of the data centre industry since its birth. He's seen it all, from the good to the bad, to the completely unbelievable. He's ridden the highs, leading Telecity Group from near bankruptcy to a multi-billion-dollar company, and survived the lows, like being ousted out of the very company he'd built up.This is his never-before-published account of the explosion of the data centre industry. Here, he and key industry insiders lift the lid on an industry that's been hiding its shocking stories beneath the floor tiles of data centres the world over. This audiobook exposes how an industry that's only 25 years old became the most important in the world and introduces you to the egos, opportunists, and forward-thinkers who made that happen. ungekürzt. Dead men can’t love.  Former drug trafficker Richmond “Lucky” Lucklighter “died” in the line of duty while working off a 10-year sentence in service to the Southeastern Narcotics Bureau, only to be reborn as Simon “Lucky” Harrison. The newbie he trained, former marine Bo Schollenberger, is now his partner on (and maybe off) the job. It’s hard to tell when Lucky doesn’t understand relationships or have a clue what any sane human is doing in his bed. Bo’s nice to have around, sure, but there’s none of that picking-out-china-together crap for Lucky.  While fighting PTSD, memories of a horrid childhood, and a prescription drug addiction, Bo is paying for his mistakes. Using his pharmacy license for the good guys provides the sort of education he never got in school. Undercover with his hard-headed partner, Bo learns that not everything is as it seems in the world of pharmaceuticals.  When a prescription drug shortage jeopardizes the patients at Rosario Children’s Cancer Center, it pits Bo and Lucky against not only predatory opportunists but also each other. How can they tell who the villains are? The bad guys don’t wear black hats, but they might wear white coats. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Darcy Stark. After helping my steady dragon Zav with his family problems, I thought life would get back to normal. As normal as it can be when you’re a hit woman responsible for hunting down bad guys. That was before a strange artifact showed up in a bog and turned my ancient dwarven sword into a magical beacon. Now, my enemies can sense it from hundreds of miles away. More than that, every club-toting, over-muscled orc, ogre, and troll who would like a magic sword can sense it.Usually, fighting off opportunists wouldn’t be a problem (they don’t call me Ruin Bringer without reason), but even I can only handle so many attacks at a time. And Zav isn’t as much help as you’d think, since he’s busy on a quest for a ring. No, it’s not a Lord of the Rings kind of quest. My boss put it in Zav's head that since we’re mated in the dragon way, we should also be married in the human way. Now, he’s off to find the perfect engagement ring. Given his taste in human footwear, I may be in trouble for more reasons than my marked sword. Not only is there no chance of my life getting back to normal any time soon, but if I can’t figure out how to fix my sword, I’ll be dead long before I can get married. ungekürzt. Today, the #MeToo movement is catching fire and giving courage to so many victims to boldly come out, even after many years, to talk and raise awareness. On one side of the balance are the victims who not only carry the burden of the cross on their backs, and relive the trauma, but are accused from many different angles. On the other hand though are some opportunists who make use of this mighty movement for their own purposes, victimizing the innocent. It is indeed good that such a movement has gathered much momentum. On the same vein, the author wants to raise awareness for a very stealth problem - the emotional abuse of children. Using a fictional storyline, the author puts the spotlight on a particular aspect of emotional abuse. While all the characters in this story are completely made up, the message is very real. The children need not be doomed to a lost childhood and a hurting adulthood. All it takes is a small drop of help to rescue a child in distress. While that drop is necessary, a premature, or an assumptive drop can tip the scales in the wrong direction. This too is brought out in the story. Like it is said, one shouldn't trust just what is seen or heard. A thorough inquiry is necessary - especially in such sensitive matters.  ungekürzt. Dave Robicheaux returns in another Bayou adventure, this one more gruesome and gut-wrenching than any that have come before. Hurricane Katrina has ravaged New Orleans, leaving the streets and buildings flooded and the city awash with opportunists, looters, and vicious criminals. There is no order, no law. Police are shooting randomly at innocent people, prison guards have abandoned their posts, bodies float through the streets and hang from trees, and every drug dealer, murderer, and rapist is out taking advantage of the desperate lawlessness that holds the city captive. In the midst of it all is Robicheaux, doing his best to help regulate the post-Katrina madness, all the while on a dogged search for a pair of dangerous fugitives, a dope-addicted, fallen priest, and a vigilante insurance salesman who takes his family's protection too far. This promises to be the most taxing and emotional case Robicheaux has had to work.In his singular style, which defies genre, James Lee Burke has created a haunting picture of life in New Orleans after Katrina. Filled with complex characters and vivid descriptions of the destruction and death that gripped the Big Easy, The Tin Roof Blowdown is an action-packed crime thriller as well as a poignant story of what disaster and desperation can do to people. Language: English. Narrator: Will Patton. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/sans/000936/bk_sans_000936_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.
