Wood & Wire
Wood & Wire, that's all a guitar really is. When you strip away the fancy electronics, tremolo arms, exotic woods and inlays, you're left with a piece of wood strung with wire. It's where it started and where it will end. My guitars can be petulant, annoying and angry. They hurt to play. They are rarely, completely in tune. They squeek and buzz when I don't want them to do so. And yet there are many times, in the morning for me, when I'll sit with my tea and acoustic, my wife and cat nearby, and what comes out of those strings is close to heaven. And on those occasions when my muse is sitting nearby, I swear I'm actually transported to some other-wordly place. This new CD compilation has been an enjoyable challenge for me as it is my first all-acoustic offering. My previous releases have been done almost entirely on my Gretsch 6120, a truly lovely guitar. But as guitarists know, playing electric allows a lot of "slight of hand", slurring of notes, bends, effects and more. It's easier to sound grand and larger than life on electric. Not so on acoustic. Articulation must be as close to perfect as possible. String noise is an evil genie, appearing from the lamp at the least wanted times. Mistakes stand out like red flags. The songs are personal in nature to me, as they attempt to express moments in my life and feelings I have towards people I know and places I have visited. I am especially fond of cats and have written two compositions for them. This CD, as always, could not have been done without the help of my wife Norine, my friend and companion in life, my best and worst critic and sometimes writing partner.
