The Pueblo of Yesterday and Today: The History and Culture of the Anasazi and Hopi , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 161min
When European settlers - and later American settlers - came into contact with Native American tribes on the continent, they were frequently unable to differentiate between the subcultures within individual tribes. This led to all kinds of misunderstandings. When the Spanish came into contact with different tribes in the Southwest, they categorized several of them as Pueblo. Thus, while most Americans have heard of the Pueblo and Navajo, many remain unfamiliar with distinctions within the tribes. The Pueblo fascinated those who came across their settlements, especially those located in desert regions and the sides of cliffs. One such settlement, Oraibi, was created around AD 1100. It remains one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in North America. The Spanish were so intrigued by the structure of the communities that they gave the natives the name Pueblo, a term they used to measure certain sizes for their own settlements. Today's Puebloan tribes are descended from tribes known as the "ancestral Puebloan people", one of which was the Anasazi. The name Anasazi came from their enemies; it is a Navajo word that means "enemy ancestor". While that name understandably continues to offend the descendants of the Anasazi, it also underscores that there is still a lot of uncertainty regarding the history of the Anasazi. It is still unclear what the Anasazi called themselves, and though they resided near the "Four Corners" area of Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico for more than 700 years, they mysteriously abandoned their settlements shortly after they truly began to flourish around AD 1050-1150. ungekürzt. The Garden State Parkway Murders: A Cold Case Mystery , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 970min
I know that the way the bodies were left, the person who killed those girls had an excellent knowledge of chemistry, knowing that the three things you need are heat, moisture, darkness, and the proper point of acidity to eliminate evidence. All of that was accomplished. It was remarkable. (John Divel, Ocean City Police Department)The Garden State Parkway Murders: A Cold Case Mystery is the first and only historical account of the unsolved murders of college friends Susan Davis and Elizabeth Perry, who were stabbed to death in the woods alongside the Garden State Parkway near Ocean City, New Jersey, on Memorial Day 1969. The discovery of the wealthy coeds three days after their slayings, as reported by Walter Cronkite on the CBS Evening News, touches off one of the largest manhunts in New Jersey since the Lindbergh baby kidnapping. Over the next 10 years, the New Jersey State Police, Atlantic County (NJ) Prosecutor’s Office, and FBI question thousands of people, tracking leads as far as San Francisco in search of the killer. Among the suspects are infamous serial killers Ted Bundy and Gerald Eugene Stano, who were living within an hour’s drive from the murders at the time they occurred, resided next to one another for a time on Florida’s Death Row, and indirectly confessed to the murders before being executed. The Garden State Parkway Murders tracks the author’s decade-long obsession with seeking justice for Davis and Perry. Presented with all the information surrounding these brutal murders, including a discussion of recent technological advancements in DNA and FBI serial killer profiling, the listener is asked to consider: Why hasn’t this cold case been solved? ungekürzt. Abydos: The History and Legacy of the Ancient Egyptian Holy City and Burial Site , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 105min
The city of Abydos was the most important political city in ancient Egypt’s “Archaic” or Early Dynastic Period, which encompassed the first two dynasties of Egyptian history (ca. 3100-2650 BC). All of the kings of the First Dynasty and two of the kings of the Second Dynasty are believed to have resided in the nearby, but as of yet unlocated, city of Thinis and were buried in the necropolis of Abydos, making it one of the holiest sites in early pharaonic history. After the Archaic Period, Abydos lost much of its political influence to Memphis, Thebes, and other cities, but retained its significance by becoming an important religious center. Beginning in the Old Kingdom (ca. 2686-2181 BC), the first major temples were built near the city, attracting priests and pilgrims alike, but it was in the Middle Kingdom (ca. 2055-1650 BC) when Abydos became the center of the Osiris cult. As the importance and popularity of Osiris grew throughout Egypt, so too did the city. Several kings in the New Kingdom (ca. 1550-1069 BC) and Late Period built mortuary temples to their own cults and added to the existing monuments to Osiris in order to ensure their immortality and to prove their piousness to their people. Eventually, though, when the Greeks took control of Egypt, the importance of Abydos waned and so too did its size.Abydos: The History and Legacy of the Ancient Egyptian Holy City and Burial Site examines the history of the city, and what life and death were like there. You will learn about Abydos like never before. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dan Gallagher. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/143739/bk_acx0_143739_sample.mp3. As Happy as I Can Stand: The Third Edition of Hatching Charlie , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 614min
McCormack was asked two questions by his children that unerringly targeted issues he had struggled with his entire life: "Who are you?" and "What is life about?" Hatching Charlie, his attempt to respond, rocketed him down a wormhole through time, his past made present. He re-lives the disruptions of military family life, family violence, the racism of the Jim Crow South, and the tidal wave of fear and confusion when exiled to a boarding school in France as a child. With unalloyed frankness, McCormack, an award-winning psychotherapist, author, and lecturer, takes us into the mental illness in his own family, and the destructive influence of his cratered childhood upon his adulthood. During this journey, we go behind the scenes of psychiatric treatment, including a vivid portrayal of McCormack’s experience in psychoanalysis and as a psychiatric social worker in a locked-door inpatient treatment unit. There, we become engulfed in penetrating horror and self-doubt when confronted with the suicide of several patients, as well as the profound sense of fulfillment experienced when able to help those who had been unable to help themselves. In his striving for happiness and meaning, McCormack arrives at the realization that there was an enduring block to happiness and that it resided within himself. Rejecting this self-limiting fate, he pecks away at the shells that confine him like a Russian nesting doll and discovers first-hand the hidden power of incomplete mourning to constrict happiness like English ivy strangles a tree. In this moving memoir, there is wisdom about life, love, and relationships that will bring tears to your eyes and a smile to your face. ungekürzt. Language: English. Kim Jong-il: The Controversial Life and Legacy of North Korea’s Second Supreme Leader , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 99min
When General Kim Jong-il was born, the clouds opened up, and he came down from heaven, and then there was a huge snowstorm! When General Kim Jong-il shouts out loud, storms always happen, huge storms always happen! - "Dear Leader," a state-issued anthem dedicated to Kim Jong-il North Korea has long been the butt of jokes, and it has been a longstanding target of international criticism, but the startling satellite image was anything but amusing, for it demonstrated the truly catastrophic conditions North Koreans find themselves in. Statistics show that the average South Korean uses up to 10,162 kilowatt hours of power per year, whereas their neighbors in the north consume only 739. This is only one amongst a slew of stumbling blocks affecting the state, impeding it from proper progress. The mismatching network of sprawling, yet lifeless cities and squalid, poverty-stricken provinces stands eerily silent next to the bustling metropolises on either side of it. North Korea is trapped in an impenetrable, soundproof bubble, the entire state frozen in time. Notwithstanding a fractional sliver of the capital, where the Supreme Commander and the North Korean elites resided, the faded Pyongyang skyline and its blocky, monotone buildings - while a vast improvement from the rest of the state - seemed to be lifted straight out of the '70s at best. So why is North Korea so starkly different from its neighbors when nothing more but mere borders separate them? A tyrannical lineage secured by nepotism. An entire nation indoctrinated by chilling, mindboggling propaganda, molded by fear and forced ignorance. Mass purges doled out seemingly on whims, without fair trials. Unparalleled paranoia and cold-blooded assassinations left and right, seemingly around every curve and corner. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dan Gallagher. Memphis: The History and Legacy of the Capital of Ancient Egypt , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 96min
Egypt is not a country we live in but a country that lives within us. - Pope Shenouda III Africa may have given rise to the first humans, and Egypt probably gave rise to the first great civilizations, which continue to fascinate modern societies across the globe nearly 5,000 years later. From the Library and Lighthouse of Alexandria to the Great Pyramid at Giza, the Ancient Egyptians produced several wonders of the world, revolutionized architecture and construction, created some of the world's first systems of mathematics and medicine, and established language and art that spread across the known world. With world-famous leaders like King Tut and Cleopatra, it's no wonder that today's world has so many Egyptologists. For almost four millennia, the Great Pyramids of Ancient Egypt have been widely hailed as the single greatest archeological feat man has ever accomplished. The Great Pyramid at Giza is the only one of the seven wonders of the ancient world to have survived into the modern age. Unlike so many pieces of the historical record which have been "re-discovered," relatively recently (in the grand scheme of things) in their 4,000 years of existence, the Great Pyramids have never allowed themselves to be truly forgotten by the human civilization which has never ceased to regard them with wonder and awe. Thus, it is somewhat ironic that over time, people have managed to retain hardly any information about Memphis, the ancient Egyptian capital in which the pharaohs responsible for the Great Pyramids resided and ruled. At some point, even the precise location of Memphis came to be forgotten, and the city was believed lost to the annals of time. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jim D. Johnston. Warren Buffett: A Biography , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 37min
Warren Buffett was born on August 30, 1930, to Howard and Leila Buffett in Omaha, Nebraska. Warren came from a prestigious line of Buffetts that had resided in Omaha for seven consecutive generations. Warren's grandfather operated a grocery store starting in 1869, and Warren's father dabbled in stocks. Because Howard Buffett was a stockbroker and congressman, Warren was saturated with financial knowledge and terms from a young age. A stay-at-home mom, Leila provided two siblings for Buffett; both were girls. Many friends of Warren fondly recall his ability to compute huge columns of numbers with only his mind. Coupling this with Warren's home environment, family and friends knew it was only a matter of time before Warren would delve into the world of financial risk and success. Warren exhibited his entrepreneurial prowess at the age of six when he bought six cartons of Coca-Cola from his grandpa at the price of 25 cents apiece and promptly sold the individual bottles for five cents, making a five-cent profit on every carton. As the world encouraged children to play on the playground or to go have fun, Warren busied himself in making money and testing the murky waters of risk. Warren's life took a dramatic turn when he was five, however. After his father came home one night and announced to the family that the bank where he was employed was closing, Warren's family became very poor. The infamous Great Depression had snaked its way to Nebraska, devastating anything in its path. Warren's grandfather helped Warren's father out by sending him money each month, but it was a while before Howard was employed again. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: David Washington. Rocky Jordan, Collection 1, Hörbuch, Digital, 353min
Reminiscent of Humphrey Bogart’s character “Rick Blaine” from the classic film Casablanca, Rocky Jordan was banished by enemies from St. Louis and relocated to Cairo, Egypt. Now living in Northern Africa, Rocky Jordan owns and operates his gin joint (the Café Tambourine) and finds an assortment of mystery and intrigue while unwillingly moonlighting as a crime fighter. Cairo‘s Police Chief, Sam Sabaaya, is an Egyptian Muslim who strictly adheres to the law. Often times, when a crime is committed, Jordan is the prime suspect - forcing him to solve the crime so he can clear his name and save his neck. The writers (Larry Roman and Gomer Cool) strived to create an authentic North African feel to the show. All street names used were factual and the theme featured Middle Eastern music by Richard Aurandt. There was an earlier version of the show called A Man Named Jordan which was near identical except Jordan resided in Istanbul, Turkey. First heard in 1945, Rocky Jordan was sponsored for most of its run by Del Monte Foods. Jack Moyles starred as Rocky with movie tough guy George Raft later taking over the role in the summer series of 1951 and 1952. 2/5/50 “The Return of Toni” 2/12/50 “Madame Du Lac’s Daughter” 2/19/50 “Paid in Full” 2/26/50 “The Return of Dr. Piru” 3/5/50 “The Secret of Wong Lee” 3/12/50 “The White Beetle” 3/19/50 “The Perfect Witness” 4/2/50 “The Strange Fate of Professor Amar” 4/9/50 “Holiday Weekend” 4/16/50 “Adventure in Zaqaziq” 4/23/50 “The Big Gamble” 5/7/50 “Hoard of the Mameluks” Language: English. Boko Haram: The History of Africa's Most Notorious Terrorist Group , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 79min
Profiles leaders of the group and explains its history of attacks Includes footnotes for further reading Includes a table of contents "Boko Haram are better armed and are better motivated than our own troops. Given the present state of affairs, it is absolutely impossible for us to defeat Boko Haram." - Kashim Shettima, governor of Borno On the morning of April 15, 2004, the world woke up to the extraordinary news of the kidnap in a little known hamlet of Nigeria of some 276, primarily Christian schoolgirls, by the radical militant Nigerian insurgent group Boko Haram. Almost overnight, the group, which had resided somewhat on the fringes of global consciousness up until that point, found itself at the forefront as international public outrage, culminating in a social media campaign headed by First Lady Michelle Obama, demanded the immediate return of the kidnapped girls. Those demands, while laudable, simply served to project a hitherto local and regional jihadist movement, operating in the gray hinterland of the African Sahel region, into an organization with an international profile and a place in the pantheon of globally recognized terror organizations. If anything, the headlines have probably imbued Boko Haram with more punch than it can practically wield, for in reality the organization, at least for the time being, it remains less a jihadist movement that a localized terror insurgency with very locally defined objectives. If Boko Haram does indeed nurture international ambitions, which increasingly it appears to, then these perhaps are a fringe expression of a movement that appears in on the whole, again at least for the time being, to be too haphazard, and chaotic in its administration and leadership to really find a home amongst the larger and better known international organizations. ungekürzt.
