Starfist: Kingdom's Swords, Hörbuch, Digital, 131min

Rumors swirl of a deadly alien invasion. But few believe that such sentient beings exist. Except Gunny Bass and the Marines of the 3rd platoon, who once fought enemy aliens called Skinks - fierce, fanatical fighters with hideous weapons who attack for no other reason but to kill. Then, while slogging through Kingdom’s fetid swamps, the Marines are attacked by awesome unseen weapons that could destroy half a platoon with one shot. Clearly they are facing no normal enemy. A Candle , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 18min
Leo Tolstoy, was a Russian writer and philosopher who primarily wrote novels and short stories. He was a master of realistic fiction and is widely considered one of the world's greatest novelists. Tolstoy's literal interpretation of the teachings of Jesus, centering on the Sermon on the Mount, caused him in later life to become a fervent Christian anarchist and anarcho-pacifist. His ideas on nonviolent resistance are represented in his short story "A Candle", which tells the story of a group of peasants suffering under a tyrannical overseer. His beatings are so severe as to be sometimes fatal and when he orders the serfs to plough the fields on Easter Sunday, a discussion begins as to whether they should assassinate the brutal steward. The peasants are divided on the subject. One group, led by Vasili are determined to murder the bully. Another group, swayed by Piotr, believe it is best to bear their sufferings rather than to risk their souls. But neither group can possibly foresee the strange and terrible events that occur when Easter Sunday arrives. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Cathy Dobson. Ariadna comes from a wealthy family and speaks French. Yevdokia is illiterate and bitter. All have lost their families, all are deeply traditional, and all become “grannies” to little Suzanna. Only they secretly name her Sofia. And just as secretly they impart to her the history of her country as they experienced it: The Revolution, the early days of the Soviet Union, the blockade and starvation of World War II. The little girl responds by drawing beautiful pictures, but she is mute. If the authorities find out she will be taken from her home and sent to an institution. When Antonina falls desperately ill, the grannies are faced with the reality of losing the little girl they love - unless a stepfather can be found before it is too late. Four from Mangrove: Tales of Swords and Sorcery , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 118min
Four from Mangrove is a four-story collection, all involving different aspects of the city-nation of Mangrove. The audiobook is a classic fantasy, sword, sorcery tale.Once, there was a land like no other. It was a city-state, a nation. The reach of its rulers sometimes spanned continents, and at other times reached no farther than the walls of a war-torn palace.Giants lived in Mangrove - powerful kings and generals who ruled all within their sight; and lands far beyond. And it gave birth to the least of us - powerless serfs and homeless orphans who begged for the smallest coins. In times of greatness its armies plundered far and wide, trampling everything and everyone before them. And in days of despair its soldiers died in vain defending the gates. Its art and its technology and the skill of its wizards were unsurpassed. The books in its libraries and the men who put spells to parchment all burned together.Mangrove lived and thrived and its people strode across the planet. Mangrove died and was forgotten and no one remembered much about it, unless it was in legends and tales told to frighten unruly children or to satisfy curious sages.Mangrove lives, in dreams. Here, then, are four...four from Mangrove. ungekürzt. Romanov: The Last Tsarist Dynasty , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 271min
The Romanov family ruled as tsars and emperors of all Russia for just over 300 years - 19 men and women in total, some of them brilliant, some of them mad, most of them somewhere in between. The story of the Romanovs begins in Moscow in 1613, and ends in Ekaterinburg in 1918, at the beginning of a revolution, where Nicholas II, his wife Alexandra, and their five children were slaughtered by a Soviet death squad. In this book, you will learn about the lives and reigns of each Romanov emperor and empress. Hear about Peter the Great, who kept company with peasants and pie sellers but had his own son tortured to death; Catherine the Great, who finally convinced Europe that there was more to be found in the far north than just snow and barbarians; Alexander I, the gallant emperor who famously defeated Napoleon in 1812; Alexander II, who freed the serfs and survived five assassination attempts before perishing in the sixth; and Nicholas II, who ended the Romanov dynasty in 1917 when he abdicated the throne on behalf of himself and his son, the hemophiliac Alexei, who would never be emperor but is now considered a saint. ungekürzt. Year of our Lord, 1276. In the hours just before dawn, blasphemous curses echo throughout the stone manor. A knife clatters to the floor, and a feisty young widow is bound, blindfolded, and led to the marriage altar. The king couldn't possibly have sanctioned this farce of a marriage, could he? Abandon her beloved people to be ruled by her new husband, an ignorant Templar knight? "Never!" the Lady Ann vows. A murderous witch for a wife? The Beast of Thornhill finds himself in the middle of either a cruel jest or an evil conspiracy. After returning from the Holy Wars, he accepts bestowment of a small parcel of land in return for saving King Edward's life. But the reward comes with a warning regarding the estate's mistress. The Vicar of Bullhampton , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1358min
This comprehensive novel consists of three subplots which interlink to form the whole and supply a trio of targets at which Trollope aims his proselytising pen. The first treats on the courtship of a woman by a man whom she does not love and with whom she is not compatible. Mary Lowther will not accept such a marriage of dishonesty. The second deals with the plight of a young woman who has fallen prey to the wiles of an evil seducer and subsequently adopts a life of prostitution. Trollope's argument was that the punishment for fornication was much harsher for women than men, although in most cases the latter were more to blame, and their victims were given no opportunity of returning to decent lives no matter how repentant they may have been. The third subject to receive the benefit of the author's moral outrage is the hypocrisy and narrow vision of the landed gentry in the person of the Marquis of Trowbridge, who treats his tenants as serfs and whose social code appears to be 'might is right'. The common sense of the pragmatic protagonist, Frank Fenwick, apparently very like Trollope himself, is a joy to hear. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Peter Newcombe Joyce.
