Wings of the Black Death: The Spider 3 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 372min
Some writers fall into clover, but Norvell W. Page backed into a spider web that captured him for ten exciting years. Back in the difficult year of 1933, Page was working as a newspaperman and writing for the pulp magazines, when fellow pulpster mentioned that he was stuck. He had promised to deliver a horror novelette to the editor of Dime Mystery Magazine, but the deadline was too tight. So Page decided give it a shot himself. Page's timing was perfect. He not only scored the cover of that issue of Dime Mystery, but this was his first sale to Popular Publications, who had just launched The Spider, written by R. T. M. Scott. After two issues, Scott was moving on and editor Rogers Terrill desperately needed a replacement. Page was fast, wrote vividly, and made difficult deadlines. The job was offered to Page. His background as a crime reporter didn't hurt his resume either. The December, 1933 issue of The Spider ushered in the era of Grant Stockbridge with the thrilling Spider exploit, Wings of the Black Death. Stockbridge was the byline Popular attached to The Spider to avoid the kind of problem caused by the loss of R. T. M. Scott. With his first white-heat story, Norvell Page owned both that byline and the series. No doubt, he saved it from oblivion. In a few short months, Page remade Richard Wentworth alias the Spider into a messianic avenger unlike anything pulp readers ever read before. Driven, deadly, the Spider was a daredevil caught between the law that branded him as a criminal and the underworld he terrorized with his metallic laugh and searing lead. RadioArchives.com is proud to present Norvell Page's debut Spider exploit - a desperate struggle against overwhelming odds to save Manhattan from being overwhelmed by a man-made Plague - as narrated by Nick Santa Maria, with Robin Riker as Nita Van Sloan. Produced by Roger Rittner with full period music score and sound effects. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Roger Rittner. 44 Scotland Street, Hörbuch, Digital, 365min
First published in 110 episodes in The Scotsman newspaper, 44 Scotland Street revolves around the comings and goings at No. 44 Scotland Street, a fictitious building in a real street in the author's home city of Edinburgh. One of McCall Smith's particular talents is his ability to portray archetypes without resorting to stereotype or cliche. We immediately recognise the Edinburgh chartered surveyor, stalwart of the Conservative Association, who dreams of membership of Scotland's most exclusive golf club. We have the pushy Stockbridge mother, and her prodigiously talented five-year-old son, who is making good progress with the saxophone and with his Italian. Then there is Domenica Macdonald, who is that type of Edinburgh lady who sees herself as a citizen of a broader intellectual world. 44 Scotland Street is vintage McCall Smith, tackling issues of trust and honesty, snobbery and hypocrisy, love and loss, but all with great lightness of touch. The Man Who Could Be King , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 595min
When young Josiah Penn Stockbridge accepts the position as aide-de-camp to George Washington at the beginning of the Revolutionary War, he thinks only of the glory and romance of battle. He is unprepared for the reality of America's bloody fight for independence. The Continental Army is starving, underpaid, and dangerously close to mutiny, and Washington fights not just to defeat the British but to maintain order and morale among his own men. As anonymous letters by officers calling for revolt circulate through camp in Newburgh, New York, Washington must make a choice: preserve the young republic by keeping civilian control of the military, or reshape the new government by standing in solidarity with his troops and assuming greater power for himself. During one fateful week in American history, Josiah will watch a conflicted general become a legend and will discover for himself that the greatest struggles of war are those within the hearts and minds of fallible men. ungekürzt. The story revolves around the comings and goings at No. 44 Scotland Street, a fictitious building in a real street in Edinburgh. Immediately recognisable are the Edinburgh chartered surveyor, stalwart of the Conservative Association, who dreams of membership of Scotland's most exclusive golf club. We have the pushy Stockbridge mother, and her prodigiously talented five-year-old son, who is making good progress with the saxophone and with his Italian. Then there is Domenica Macdonald who is that type of Edinburgh lady who sees herself as a citizen of a broader intellectual world. In McCall Smith's hands such characters retain charm and novelty, simultaneously arousing both mirth and empathy. 44 Scotland Street is vintage McCall Smith, tackling issues of trust and honesty, snobbery and hypocrisy, love and loss, but all with great lightness of touch. Clever, elegant and funny, this is a novel that provides huge entertainment but which is underpinned by the moral dilemmas of everyday life and the characters' struggles to resolve them. ungekürzt. American Mirror: The Life and Art of Norman Rockwell , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1194min
Welcome to Rockwell Land, writes Deborah Solomon in the introduction to this spirited and authoritative biography of the painter who provided 20th-century America with a defining image of itself. As the star illustrator of The Saturday Evening Post for nearly half a century, Norman Rockwell mingled fact and fiction in paintings that reflected the we-the-people, communitarian ideals of American democracy. Freckled Boy Scouts and their mutts, sprightly grandmothers, a young man standing up to speak at a town hall meeting, a little black girl named Ruby Bridges walking into an all-white school - here was an America whose citizens seemed to believe in equality and gladness for all. Who was this man who served as our unofficial "artist in chief" and bolstered our country's national identity? Behind the folksy, pipe-smoking facade lay a surprisingly complex figure - a lonely painter who suffered from depression and was consumed by a sense of inadequacy. He wound up in treatment with the celebrated psychoanalyst Erik Erikson. In fact, Rockwell moved to Stockbridge, Massachusetts, so that he and his wife could be near Austen Riggs, a leading psychiatric hospital. "What's interesting is how Rockwell's personal desire for inclusion and normalcy spoke to the national desire for inclusion and normalcy," writes Solomon. "His work mirrors his own temperament - his sense of humor, his fear of depths - and struck Americans as a truer version of themselves than the sallow, solemn, hard-bitten Puritans they knew from 18th-century portraits." ungekürzt. Satan's Sightless Legion: The Spider, Volume 35, August 1936 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 216min
It is Wentworth himself - the Spider - who is first to feel the dread hand of that Master of Darkness - The Blind Man - and his satanic weapon. His best friend, Kirkpatrick, Commissioner of Police, is strangely attacked by the forces of evil; his beloved Nita van Sloan is spirited away into a fearsome fate...and the Spider himself is destined to a horrible life of pain and misery. Caught between the forces of evil, the Spider at last seems doomed to die in ignominy! In the summer of 1933 Popular Publications President Harry Steeger and Executive Editor Rogers Terrill decided to enter the new field of magazines built around a single hero. They wanted to publish a crime-buster to rival a famous pulp juggernaut. Steeger frankly admitted in later years, "The reason we started the title The Spider was because of the success of Street & Smith's The Shadow. At this point in pulp history individual titles became very popular, so we decided to try out a few ourselves." Author Norvell W. Page, who penned the majority of the Spider's exploits as Grant Stockbridge, once described his hero in gigantic, but unflinching, terms: "His exploits had raised him to the proportions of a legendary hero. In ancient times, Rome would have made him an emperor god. Salem might have burned him as a sorcerer." Nick Santa Maria again takes on the dual role of Richard Wentworth, aka the Spider, master of men, for this powerful story, originally published in The Spider magazine in August, 1936. ungekürzt.
