Essenza
Essence of a project Where do you start to find the roots of a project? How do you understand what happens before or after? Well...the essence of this project is the life itself, the events, the people and the energy, those things that seems to be only a coincidence, events that seems to be disconnected. Suddenly, everything becomes clear, all the black points are put together by the lines of life to form an image. In this case, the imagine of this CD. I met a friend during a party and I remember I didn't want to go there,a person who believes in me and I'm very grateful: Roberto Tassi. And there is me,only at the end because you always begin from the spirit, from the energy you put in your things, the emphaty you generate with people. At the end there is me with my guitar, with my random project of solo guitar born like a game in my daily "work in progress". It became a really professional project and I feel so proud. I didn't think at the moment to record a solo guitar CD,simply because I didn't feel ready. But it's life, when things happens you just live them, when you are playing a song you have to finish it,the train doesn't stop. So here we are telling about this story, telling about the essence of this project, talking about this wonderful experience. I believe everything started writing my original songs,I guess it's the key before my style and my approach on the guitar. Dedications and inspirations I recorded only few of my originals because I wanted to face some classical songs of jazz,a medlay of Duke Ellington's ballads,an homage to Estate,an amazing Bruno Martino's song actually known as an Italian jazz standard.I played others... If I used a sport language I would say that my music born and dies with my original music, because it's me tere, there is everything of me. Lidia is a ballad dedicated to my grandmother,a person I missed a lot who I loved so much.I remember I cried many times playing that song. Universi lontani it's a way to say that people can be really close even tough they are so distant, even if there is an ocean between them, even tough it seems impossible. But sometimes we are limited and we built a wall between each other.Sometimes life runs away and we choose to renounce and even a love can finish. Requiem per un sogno is a story of a love,a story of a dream. There is pain there but also hope, sometimes bad things may revelate good things. Una lunga conversazione is a song that I love a lot.It tells a story of a conversation but I never said which one.I like the idea of the interpretation, everybody can develop is own conversation, everybody has in own story and it sounds really nice. Finally,Blues for Monk is dedicated to one of my favourite pianist and composers. I strongly believe that everything comes out from the energy, that's why I can write only if something special happens. Composing a song Many people asked me how to compose a song,if I use to write the melody and then the harmony or the chords before the sinlge notes. The truth is that I have no idea! Maybe I have a gift. All I can say is that I love the melody because it express what we have inside, the melody is the spirit living through the music. So,when I write I look for a nice melody, something I can sing and that remains in my mind, something I can remember when I wake up. Concerning the harmony,I imagine to be influenced by the music I'm listening that period. At the end there is no secret! The style I decided to talk about my style only finishing this small journal because even if it's particular, maybe unique,I consider experiences and human energies more important and special. Yes..I worked a lot on my style! I would like to thank Sid Jacobs who introduced me to this style we call guitar/piano. He influenced me a lot inspiring me and being a teacher,a friend and finally a musician I worked with. Thanks to Jimmy Wyble for opening my eyes about counterpoint, for sharing his wonderful friendship being an angel. Also Joe Diorio for his spiritual sense of things.Music is never only music! Being in touch with this guys allowed me to absorb and to learn, sometimes to steal always remaining myself. You can play Sid's chords,Jimmy's counterpoint or Joe's lines but it is always Simone Gubbiotti playing, you have your own identity and this is the lesson. So,the arrangements I played in this record are completely under my responsibility even tough influenced by those incredible artists. The recording I recorded December 21 and 22,2007 between a bottle of wine and a delicious lunch. The real problem of the session was the essence of the project itself. To be only a guitar was so easy but complex at the same time because it was pratically impossible to fix the track when I had a mistake and we had to start again from the beginning. Some song, especially the second day,was played directly the first time with no repetition. Some ending have been improvised during the recording or changed while playing and we decided to keep some little mistake that sounded more real. Obvously,I will never say which track! I'm so happy about the product and the sound. I'm so glad about the relaxing atmosphere, the respect and the friendship that we lived every single moment of the recording session. Simone Gubbiotti Born in Assisi,Italy,September 22,1974,Simone got his diploma in foreign languages in 1993 and started, the same year, practicing guitar as a self-taught. He moved to Florence to attend the faculty of psicology at University in 1994 beginning to go out with different local bands playing in a variety of contests from rock to pop,to Italian folk music. Simone left the faculty very soon to follow his passion for music and in 1998 he found out his attitude for jazz and improvised music. He studied harmony and theory with the famous clarinet player Gabriele Mirabassi and he attended,in the summer 1998,the Berklee College of Music clinics during the Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia studyind and playing with Jim Kelly and Mark White. In this period Simone was involved in different kind of combos and with his first group he played at Rieti Jazz Festival in 1999 sharing the stage with Irio DePaula and Enrico Pieranunzi. Simone has been guitar player and member of the Bridges Big Band from Perugia and of the Perujazz Big Band from 1999 to 2003.Those Orchestras were very active on the Italian scene in jazz festivals and festivals of poetry. In 2000 Simone moved for a while in Paris studying with Pierre Cullaz and playing in many jazz clubs with Guillaume Guino. He met Jim Hall in Ravenna during a clinic where he had the opportunity to play with him also attending classes of harmony, improvisation and composition. But it's in 2001 that Simone discovered his natural talent for composition studyind in Boston with Jon Damian, already teacher of Bill Frisell and Mike Stern.Jon Damian developed a variety of exercises to improve the sense of the melody and the hear training and he helped Simone to understand the importance to achieve his own language. In 2002 he attented the famous Siena Jazz europiean clinics playing with Tomaso Lama and Pietro Condorelli, studyinf history of jazz, hear training and modal harmony with Pietro Tonolo and Stefano Zenni. Despite winning a scholarship for the Berklee College of Music of Boston,in 2003 Simone decided to move to Los Angeles to attend the G.I.T.(Guitar Institute of Technology). He stayed in the school for one week meeting the great educator Sid Jacobs. He suggested to quit the school and he took Simone as a student in his house. Simone had the opportunity to meet the giants,he studied and played with Joe Diorio,Sid Jacobs,Joe LaBarbera,Darek Oles,John Pisano,Dave Carpenter,Gary Novak. Came back to Italy in 2004 Simone invited Sid Jacobs for their first Italian tour.He recorded his first CD,"Simykyo",with Sid Jacobs and Marco Collazzoni .
