The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 410min
This remarkable book is the only novel by Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926), the greatest German-language poet of his time. It is, in a sense, a true curiosity - dark and intense - and possesses, not surprisingly, strong elements of autobiography. The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge (Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge) has even been described as an anti-novel. It is set in Paris in the period just before the First World War, but it presents a bleaker milieu than that described by Proust. The language is terse, the atmosphere painful, the images uncompromising. Rilke drew on the short period he spent in Paris in 1903 where, in contrast to the rural circumstances in which he had lived before, he found the underbelly of urban life distressing. He saw the sick, the vagrants, the beggars and those descending into mental and emotional confusion and despair. And he worried that he, too, might become like them. This is the theme he explores in The Notebooks in a first-person torrent of observation and reflection. Malte, a young Dane with little money but with the aspiration to be a poet, expresses a continuing uncertainty and unease, in the form of a diary, without obvious timeline or direction, except for its increasing intensity. Published in 1910, The Notebooks is a striking contrast to the crafted, polished poetry for which Rilke was better known. It has affected and been admired by many writers since, including Jean-Paul Sartre. Jamie Parker’s reading underpins the fear and the tension of the work. Translation William Needham. ungekürzt. Deep Blue , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 688min
Brandt is a down-and-out guitarist and vocalist who believes his life has hit rock bottom. He can't make the rent on his apartment, and he drinks so much he can barely make it to the crappy gig that keeps his band afloat, let alone play when he gets there. When he leaves the bar one dark night with a bottle of Jose Cuervo in one hand and his guitar case in the other, he finds he's locked out of his apartment with nowhere to go. In an alley filled with trash can fires and vagrants, Brandt meets Wally, an old black man who can play the music that Brandt dreams of - the blues. In the ensuing encounter, Brandt is gifted - or cursed - with new abilities. He feels pain building up around him and inside him. Not his own pain but the pain of others, the pain of those who have passed away, the pain of those who died with no one to hear their stories. He becomes a conduit for the pain of the world. What follows are a series of revelations, one for each member of the band and one for a young girl named Liz, drawing them together and ultimately reuniting them with Brandt. Together, Brandt, Sinthia, Shaver, Dexter, and Liz take off to the mountain town of Friendly, California, for a date with pain, destiny, and a silver-haired reverend who would like to see them dead. In the final showdown, they must meet the challenge of the music, the pain, and their mingled histories and stand, or fall, with the pain of the world in the balance. ungekürzt. Language: English. Old Hickory Lane , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 668min
Written by D. L. Keur writing as E. J. Ruek and narrated by an incomparable Kirk Winkler of Pro Media Strategies. Think "All Creatures Great and Small", but with a plot, some mystery, and maybe a ghost. Set in a near future "now" and marked by moment-to-moment, life-and-death crises that are a practicing veterinarian's life, meet Warren Jeffreys, D.V.M. Raised white, half Cree, he's gifted with animals, but not very people savvy. Struggling to survive his first year in private practice, despite the huge chip on his shoulder, college debt, and a plague of bigotry and prejudice, his bad luck and worse judgment lands him broke and homeless, camping out with vagrants and vagabonds. He's cleansing cows and cutting up dead lambs inside bawling ewes-an animal mechanic working for a small-time veterinary service in rural North Idaho. As his hopes for prestige and preeminence buckle under the rigors of day-to-day practice, he finds a new dream - a reconciliation to home and family-and with it comes a certain peace... until, once again, as fame and fortune tempt, he faces hard choices. Filled with intense, critical emergencies, all of them based on true cases, the audiobook has been "vetted" by modern, practicing veterinarians. It's the animals that make you really pull for Dr. Warren Jeffreys, because, despite his best attempts not to, he cares. A lot. And, because he cares, because he competes against death, regardless the odds, he makes a difference. Unfortunately, the often cantankerous farm folk he serves don't always appreciate his efforts and skill. Nor do they trust him, the "too tall, long-haired Injun". Warren truly is a man without a home, with a foot in two worlds, but welcome in neither until he learns to trust his own heart. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Kirk Winkler. Santa Fe Noir: Akashic Books: Noir , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 429min
Santa Fe joins Phoenix as a riveting Southwest US installment in the Akashic Noir series. "There is a real charm to the local specificity of Santa Fe Noir, and it's a pleasure to discover how different imaginations can channel the chiaroscuro energy of well-known places." (Santa Fe Reporter) "Because each story is identified by the neighborhood or specific location in which it takes place, Santa Fe Noir is a veritable road map of the city and surrounding area. It stretches from El Dorado to the Southside, Casa Solana and Cerrillos Road to the Santa Fe National Forest. The protagonists of the stories are psychotherapists, vagrants, teenagers, and gig workers. They drink and smoke. They drop acid and have sex. And more than a few are guilty of murder (or at least of justifiable homicide)." (Pasatiempo) "If you picture Santa Fe, New Mexico, only as a sunny, vibrant, colorful Southwest arts mecca, this anthology will shred that image with feral claws." (Roundup Magazine) Brand-new stories by: Ana Castillo, Jimmy Santiago Baca, Byron F. Aspaas, Barbara Robidoux, Elizabeth Lee, Ana June, Israel Francisco Haros Lopez, Ariel Gore, Darryl Lorenzo Wellington, Candace Walsh, Hida Viloria, Cornelia Read, Miriam Sagan, James Reich, Kevin Atkinson, Katie Johnson, and Tomas Moniz. From the introduction by Ariel Gore:The stories in this collection reflect a fundamental truth about this city: history depends on who's telling it. Too often the story of Santa Fe has been told only by the conquerors and the tourism PR firms. In Santa Fe Noir, you will hear the voices of the others: locals and Native people, unemployed veterans and queer transplants, the homeless and the paroled-to-here. When I asked the contributors you'll hear if they had a Santa Fe story to tell, they invariably shrugged and said something to the effect of, "Oh, I've got a story all right. But it might not fit the ima ungekürzt. Language: English. People Born in April: Anti-Horoscope: Human 'Software', Book 4 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 377min
Did you know that, for example, people who were born on April 5th leap years or April 6th common years are vagrants "here today and gone tomorrow", and are "on the road" all their lives? For them, a good time or fun "to the max" includes...going to prison. Did you know that there are people in this world who not only don't fear prison, but also feel at home and comfortable there? Or, for example, did you know that people who were born on April 9th of leap years or April 10th of common years are not only like the biblical Buridan's donkey by their character, but also create situations in which they there is always a choice (for example, creating "doublets" like an apartment and a country house, two cars, a spouse and lover, etc.)? This means that if you have romantic or family relations with one of them - you need to be ready to not only observe every day how he or she is torn between "doublets," but also engages in "games for three"! Hence the question: are you sure that you know people whom you think you know as your own self? Yes, of course you know them - if we take word-play into account. You really do know them, like you know yourself - that is, just as bad! You know your own and other people's masks and roles, but that is all. You do not believe this? Then, open this book and see for yourself! This book is for those people who are fed up with "horoscopism", who are tired of listening to nonsense about themselves and other people - from psychologists or their "all-knowing" relatives, friends, and acquaintances. It will help you save not just some time in your life, but your whole life, because otherwise you will spend your entire life on something that is a priori impossible. And, it is impossible not because you are idiots, but because Homo sapiens cannot fully know themselves and other people without an external (and, most importantly, objective) source. ungekürzt.
