From the New York Times best-selling author of The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane comes a chilling mystery - Prep meets The Crucible. It's senior year at St. Joan's Academy, and school is a pressure cooker. College applications, the battle for valedictorian, deciphering boys' texts: Through it all, Colleen Rowley and her friends are expected to keep it together. Until they can't. First it's the school's queen bee, Clara Rutherford, who suddenly falls into uncontrollable tics in the middle of class. Her mystery illness quickly spreads to her closest clique of friends, then more students and symptoms follow: Seizures, hair loss, violent coughing fits. St. Joan's buzzes with rumor; rumor blossoms into full-blown panic. Soon the media descends on Danvers, Massachusetts, as everyone scrambles to find something, or someone, to blame. Pollution? Stress? Or are the girls faking? Only Colleen - who's been reading The Crucible for extra credit - comes to realize what nobody else has: Danvers was once Salem Village, where another group of girls suffered from a similarly bizarre epidemic three centuries ago. Inspired by true events, from seventeenth-century colonial life to the halls of a modern-day high school, Conversion casts a spell. With her signature wit and passion, Katherine Howe delivers an exciting and suspenseful novel, a chilling mystery that raises the question, what's really happening to the girls at St. Joan's? ungekürzt. Ghost Month , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 685min
August is Ghost Month in Taiwan - a time to commemorate the dead: Burn incense, visit shrines, honor ancestors, and avoid unlucky situations, large purchases, and bodies of water. Jing-nan, a young man who runs a food stand in a bustling Taipei night market, doesn't consider himself superstitious, but this August is going to haunt him no matter what he does. He is shocked to the core when he learns his ex-girlfriend from high school has been murdered. She was found scantily clad and shot on the side of a highway where she was selling betel nuts to passing truck drivers. Beyond his harrowing grief for his lost love, Jing-nan is confused by the news. "Betel nut beauties" are usually women in the most desperate of circumstances; the job is almost as taboo as prostitution. But Julia Huang had been the valedictorian of their high school, and the last time Jing-nan spoke to her she was enrolled in NYU's honor program, far away in New York. The facts don't add up. Julia's parents don't think so either, and the police seem to have closed the case without asking any questions. The Huangs beg Jing-nan to do some investigating on his own - reconnect with old classmates, see if he can learn anything about Julia's life that she might have kept from them. Reluctantly, he agrees, for Julia's sake. But nothing can prepare him for what he learns - or how it will change his life. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Feodor Chin. Hell or Richmond: A Novel , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1315min
New York Times best-selling author Ralph Peters returns with the sequel to his smash hit Cain at Gettysburg. Between May 5 and June 3, 1864, the Union and Confederate armies suffered 88,000 casualties. 29,000 were killed, wounded, or captured in the first two days of combat. The savagery shocked a young, divided nation. Against this backdrop of the birth of modern warfare and the painful rebirth of the United States, Peters has created a breathtaking narrative. Oates. From Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee to a simple laborer destined to win the Medal of Honor, Peters brings to life an enthralling array of leaders and simple soldiers from both North and South, fleshing out history with stunning, knowledgeable realism. From the horrific collision of armies in the Wilderness, where neither side wanted to fight, to the shocking slaughter of the grand charge at Cold Harbor, this epic novel delivers a compelling, authentic, andsuspenseful portrait of Civil War combat. Local Souls , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 764min
With the meteoric success of Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All, Allan Gurganus placed himself among America’s most original and emotionally engaged storytellers. If his first comic novel mapped the late nineteenth-century South, Local Souls brings the twisted hilarity of Flannery O’Connor kicking into our new century.Through memorable language and bawdy humor, Gurganus returns to his mythological Falls, North Carolina, home of Widow. This first work in a decade offers three novellas mirroring today’s face-lifted South, a zone revolutionized around freer sexuality, looser family ties, and superior telecommunications, yet it celebrates those locals who have chosen to stay local. In doing so, Local Souls uncovers certain old habits - adultery, incest, obsession - still very much alive in our New South, a "Winesburg, Ohio" with high-speed Internet. Wells Tower says of Gurganus, "No living writer knows more about how humans matter to each other." Such ties of love produce hilarious, if wrenching, complications: "Fear Not" gives us a banker's daughter seeking the child she was forced to surrender when barely fifteen, only to find an adult rescuer she might have invented. In "Saints Have Mothers," a beloved high school valedictorian disappears during a trip to Africa, granting her ambitious mother a postponed fame that turns against her. And in a dramatic "Decoy," the doctor-patient friendship between two married men breaks toward desire just as a biblical flood shatters their neighborhood and rearranges their fates.Gurganus finds fresh pathos in ancient tensions: between marriage and Eros, parenthood and personal fulfillment. He writes about erotic hunger and social embarrassment with Twain's knife-edged glee. By loving Falls, Gurganus dramatizes the passing of Hawthorne’s small-town nation into those Twitter-nourished lives we now expect and relish.Four decades ago, John Cheever pronounced Allan Gurga ungekürzt. Sam Harris: A Biography , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 39min
Sam Harris was born Samuel Benjamin Harris on April 9, 1967, in Los Angeles, California. He was born to parents Susan Spivak and Berkeley Harris. His father, Berkeley, was an actor. He appeared in a variety of television and film genres but mostly specialized in Westerns. His most notable film was the 1965 Civil War drama, Shenandoah, which starred Jimmy Stewart. Harris' mother, Susan, worked behind the scenes in television and created a number of shows, including some that became iconic, like The Golden Girls. The Harris' divorced after four years of marriage, when Sam Harris was two years old, and after that, he lived with his mother. As for his early religious education, he had none. His father had a Quaker background, and his mother was Jewish but apparently never practiced. He has described his upbringing as secular. It is unknown where exactly he attended high school, although he has mentioned multiple times that he was the valedictorian. However, because he was afraid of public speaking, he declined to give the traditional valedictory at graduation. Instead, he lied to the principal, saying that he thought that someone who had been at the school longer should give the speech. After high school, he went on to Stanford University, where he originally majored in English. However, while at Stanford, he experimented with MDMA, the psychedelic drug more commonly known as ecstasy. His experiences with the drug led him to question experiences and beliefs in his life, specifically those that involved philosophy and religion. He believed that he was having spiritual experiences while on ecstasy and other psychedelics, which led him to wonder if he could have the same kind of experiences while sober. To find out, he left Stanford. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Kevin Theis. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/112342/bk_acx0_112342_sample.mp3.
