Year of Wonders: A Novel of the Plague , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 606min
When an infected bolt of cloth carries plague from London to an isolated village, a housemaid named Anna Frith emerges as an unlikely heroine and healer. Through Anna's eyes we follow the story of the fateful year of 1666, as she and her fellow villagers confront the spread of disease and superstition. As death reaches into every household and villagers turn from prayers to murderous witch-hunting, Anna must find the strength to confront the disintegration of her community and the lure of illicit love. As she struggles to survive and grow, a year of catastrophe becomes instead annus mirabilis, a "year of wonders." Inspired by the true story of Eyam, a village in the rugged hill country of England, Year of Wonders is a richly detailed evocation of a singular moment in history. Written with stunning emotional intelligence and introducing "an inspiring heroine" (The Wall Street Journal), Brooks blends love and learning, loss and renewal into a spellbinding and unforgettable read. ungekürzt. F--k You, 2016 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 82min
Penguin presents the unabridged downloadable audiobook edition of F--k You, 2016 by Bob A. N. Grypants, read by Bob A.N. Grypants. In the year that David Bowie died, Brexit shocked us, 'Hiddleswift' was a thing and Trump trumped, we are all asking ourselves: was 2016 really the worst year ever? Find out in this special* commemorative book**. In this cathartic memento of the annus shitabulus that was 2016, you'll find a hilarious guide to everything that went wrong and the few - very few - things that actually went right. For example: How was it that politics completely jumped the shark this year? From Bowie to Prince, Ali to Cohen, we celebrate the many extraordinary artists who died rather than see Trump become president. (Did Castro make it into the book? Close, but no cigar.) Compare 2016 with other terrible years in history - is it really the very worst? Make sense of manbuns, Pokemon Go, Hygge, Nigel Farage and other nonsense. With the aid of an electron microscope, we hunt for something good that actually happened. Feel relieved about all the bad things that didn't occur - yet (there's always 2017, folks!). This comic compendium will soothe your troubled soul - before you throw it in the bin and prepare your mightily hungover self to face 2017. It has to be better, right? *I.e., hastily put together. ** Warning: this book will spontaneously combust at midnight on December 31, 2016. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Bob A. N. Grypants. Year of Wonders (eBook, ePUB)
An unforgettable tale, set in 17th century England, of a village that quarantines itself to arrest the spread of the plague, from the author The Secret Chord and of March, winner of the Pulitzer Prize When an infected bolt of cloth carries plague from London to an isolated village, a housemaid named Anna Frith emerges as an unlikely heroine and healer. An Intriguing Life: A Memoir of War, Washington, and Marriage to an American Spymaster , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 587min
From wartime England to Nixon's America and beyond, Cynthia Helms was witness to some of the seminal events of our time - Vietnam, Watergate, and especially the demoralization of the CIA in the 1970s for political purposes. Opening with her feminist "epiphany" in 1968 (the annus horribilus as she describes it) that led her to end her first marriage of 24 years, this memoir reveals a world where appearances always had to be questioned, where rumors and gossip carried the weight of intrigue. Helms grew up on a farm in Maldon, England and served as one of the original Boat Crew Wrens during World War II. She came to the United States after the war with her first husband, a physician. Her later marriage to Richard Helms introduced her to a world previously known only to her in books, not just the physical world from Mexico to Fiji to Iran, but also the world of a spymaster who enjoyed the confidence of some of the most important leaders of the late twentieth century. Her time as the ambassador's wife in Tehran on the eve of the Iranian Revolution is especially telling, as she witnesses the charming but deeply flawed Shah slowly lose his way with his own people. Her "inside the beltway" observations are no less captivating, especially when her husband was being vilified by ambitious congressmen for events that happened long ago and far away and in a completely different national security context. A fascinating narrative, An Intriguing Life is a window to our most recent history. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Connie Ventress. Doom
"All disasters are in some sense man-made." Setting the annus horribilis of 2020 in historical perspective, Niall Ferguson explains why we are getting worse, not better, at handling disasters. Disasters are inherently hard to predict. Pandemics, like earthquakes, wildfires, financial crises. and wars, are not normally distributed; there is no cycle of history to help us anticipate the next catastrophe. But when disaster strikes, we ought to be better prepared than the Romans were when Vesuvius erupted, or medieval Italians when the Black Death struck. We have science on our side, after all. Yet in 2020 the responses of many developed countries, including the United States, to a new virus from China were badly bungled. Why? Why did only a few Asian countries learn the right lessons from SARS and MERS? While populist leaders certainly performed poorly in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, Niall Ferguson argues that more profound pathologies were at work-pathologies already visible in our responses to earlier disasters. In books going back nearly twenty years, including Colossus, The Great Degeneration, and The Square and the Tower, Ferguson has studied the foibles of modern America, from imperial hubris to bureaucratic sclerosis and online fragmentation. Drawing from multiple disciplines, including economics, cliodynamics, and network science, Doom offers not just a history but a general theory of disasters, showing why our ever more bureaucratic and complex systems are getting worse at handling them. Doom is the lesson of history that this country-indeed the West as a whole-urgently needs to learn, if we want to handle the next crisis better, and to avoid the ultimate doom of irreversible decline.- Shop: buecher

GEO Epoche 95/19 - 1989 (eBook, PDF)
