Don't Give Up On Love
Soul singer and songwriter, born 2 April 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee. Brother of James Bryant. Don Bryant has been married to Ann Peebles since 1974. Age. Some things do get better with age. Like the slow grind. Kids are always in a hurry-not enough time in the day, not enough minutes in the hour, too many things to do and places to be. Age makes us appreciate the depth in experiences, the range of senses in a single moment, a single touch. Instead of trying to fill 60 different seconds, age opens up the fullness of a single minute. Less becomes so much more. Oh, the slow grind. Don Bryant gets inside it, slows it further, fills every little crevice with sensuous feeling, with yearning, with pain and love. You know that old song that O. V. Wright did so well in 1971 that no one can ever do the song again (as much as everyone tries)-"Nickel and a Nail"? O. V. Wright has held tight to that song and rightfully so. But not no mo. Don has slowed it, made it a richer and deeper experience. Not to take anything from O.V.-he made it possible for others to try, for Don to succeed. But O. V., after nearly half a century, now you gotta step aside. Don Bryant is here. Though it ain't like he just showed up. The roots of this record are in the Memphis church. That's where Don Bryant began singing when he was 5. He joined his father's family vocal group, then formed a gospel quartet for a high school radio gig. Broadcasting broadened the audience and they went secular, singing pop at WLOK on Dick "Cane" Cole's popular show. Kids walking to school every morning listened to Don and the Four Canes. After parting with the DJ, they took a very real step toward careers when, as the Four Kings, they began fronting Willie Mitchell's band. Willie Mitchell led the swingingest, groovin'est band in the Memphis-Mississippi-Arkansas area-the American music floodplain. (He would later discover Al Green and make him-and keep him-a star.) Willie's band was known for instrumental records, but when they'd play at Danny's in West Memphis. Don's group fronted them, the voices that pulled dancers onto the floor. But the group broke up, as groups will do, and Willie, who was touring concert venues and dance halls, needed a vocalist who could play with his supple, slinky funky beats. The Four Kings were deposed, but Willie anointed Don Bryant. Don could stand in front of Willie's orchestra and lead.- Shop: odax

Survivor's Guilt
(LP) Das Solo-Debut von Vinnie Caruana (The Movielife, I Am The Avalanche), tief verwurzelt im Punkrock, doch weit darüber hinausgehend.Das Solo-Debut von Vinnie Caruana (The Movielife, I Am The Avalanche), tief verwurzelt im Punkrock, doch weit darüber hinausgehend. Big Scary Monsters present Survivor's Guilt by Vinnie Caruana due for release on the 27th May 2016. Vinnie Caruana, long known and respected in the punk community for fronting The Movielife and I Am The Avalanche announced the release of his debut solo LP. Titled 'Survivor's Guilt', this album will be released via Big Scary Monsters in the UK & Europe and on Equal Vision Records in North America. While he may have been alone in writing these songs, however, 'Survivor's Guilt' is not a solo record in the same way as Caruana's largely acoustic 2013 EP, 'City By The Sea', was. On 'Survivor's Guilt', Caruana plays acoustic and electric guitars, and enlisted the talents of I Am The Avalanche's Kellen Robson and Brett 'The Ratt' Romnes on bass and drums as well. In addition, Rx Bandits' Steve Choi was brought in to add instrumentation and sonic embellishments to 'Survivor's Guilt'. The result is an album boasting ten incredibly compelling, multi-layered tracks that bear witness to the breadth of Caruana's all-encompassing musical vision. 'Survivor's Guilt' is truly the creative culmination of Caruana's career to date - something that's extremely evident from the very first listen. While there are some songs that lean towards Caruana's punk rock roots, much of what's heard here is fresh and new. TRACKS: 1. Burn It Down 2. We Don t Have To Die Alone 3. Angel Of The North 4. Heavy Weighs The Summer 5. Survivor s Guilt 6. Gem Street 7. Under My Side Of The Bed 8. I Don t Believe You 9. Roll Back To Me 10. Your Religion Is Killing Me- Shop: odax

Me, Myself & I
Bobby James is a singer/songwriter artist that is based out of Nashville,Tennessee. He has been in Nashville for 7 years now and has definitely paid his time on the circuit to become one of the most seasoned musicians of his age. Everyone that comes to any of his shows will let you know that he has a way of communicating to the crowd to make them feel like a part of the whole experience. Many will say that his vocal is comparable to that of the soul of Chris Robinson (of the Black Crowes) with the flavor of Travis Tritt accompanied with the raspy sound of Paul Rodgers ( of Bad Company). He also is a well polished guitarist and enjoys playing lead guitar while fronting his Nashville band. Along with that he also has grown up entertaining audiences with his acoustic performances. Whether it be his full band or just him on a barstool with his acoustic.... You wil relate to what he sings and writes about. Regardless of his rigorous schedule over the last year and a half, he just now finished recording his debut album 'Me, Myself, and I'. It has been described as a rock meets new country flavor of the current country sound in Nashville today. From the ballads 'Me Bein' Me' and 'The Bottom' to the upbeat drivin songs like ' So Far Away From Us' and 'I Break Everything I Touch', you can relate to every lyric he writes and sing along with every melody he sings. Bobby James is simply a musician that enjoys what he does and is very professional and experienced in his craft. Playing from as far north as Wisconsin and Pennsylvania to as far south as Key West, he has been spreadin his music to all markets for the last 7 years out of Nashville and many many years before that in Kentucky. He has enjoyed the road to getting where he is at today and is looking forward to a long road of success in the future.- Shop: odax

Dish Dogs
The Dish Dogs' New Album Cleans Up The first time I heard, "Wish I was a Bird" (Track 7) as it was being previewed as an early release to the Dish Dogs eponymously titled album, I thought it was a great version of a cover. However, this is original Dish Dog material and the perfect illustration of classic Dish Dogs music - original, familiar and entertaining. The arrangement is brilliant and the blending of dark and light voices allows the song to soar. The confidence of delivery of the song allows the delivery to be sharp, direct and fun. And so it goes with every track on the album. Chris Howdyshell's latest incarnation, The Dish Dogs, have produced a genre bending sound marrying folk, rock, blues and country. Is this what we call Honky-Tonk? By going into the studio the greatest question The Dish Dogs had to answer was 'could their high-energy, audience-participation, ensemble LIVE production' translate to a studio album where the spotlight shifts to the lyrics, rhythms and harmonies, while showcasing the extreme talent that drives the existence of the Dish Dogs?' The musicianship across the board is incredible - loud, driving, precise and innovative. The Dish Dogs are a mix of older statesmen - Doug Pitts (electric guitar and guitjo), younger guns - Josh Vana (electric guitar, harmonica, vocals), Kyle Oehmke (bass), and Michael Bowman (drums, mandolin, vocals), and the middle guard of Lara Mack (vocals) and Chris Howdyshell (acoustic guitar, vocals) - fronting the band. The sound is familiar in a warm, cozy, 'I know these guys way.' Playful music gives way to serious technical guitar rift, soaring harmonica and vocal blends. Michael Bowman's crisp voice acts as a clear counterpoint to Howdyshell's seasoned croon. Mack lends a lightness and whimsical dance to the harmonies with her vast range. All of these proceedings are anchored to the Rock 'n' Roll traditions by the relentless bass guitar of Kyle Oehmke. Oehmke is technically gifted without predictability. He is a steady hand, when the melodies leave the playing field, acting as an eventual landing strip for the bluesy beats and soulful dirges. The main criticism is the arrangement of the album. The album seems to start at the point 'Dry Here for Weeks' and 'It's Not Your Fault,' which coincidentally are the newest offerings for this album. 'Leaf Pile' and 'She's An Artist' are fine songs, but do not catapult the album or showcase the talents of the ensemble. The newest tracks, possibly by virtue of being new, sound fresh and demonstrate the best of Howdyshell's talents as a lyricist. No doubt this is grown up music raised on a couple of generations of the masters - Bob Dylan, The Greatful Dead, Allman Brothers Band and Tom Waits. The album's artwork (courtesy of Bryan Vana) hints at something sad about the music. A broken down one time old reliable station wagon lays wasting in a field with the Appalachians looming beautifully in the distance. Is this our fate? The album is cathartic and revels in Pitts' guitar guile and pure feast of energy incited by Howdyshell's maniacal vocals. But this experience is not a purely happy one. If the album is life in miniature, then according to the Dish Dogs - the best it will get is 'sitting in a big Leaf Pile', because in order to get over your problems, you've got to shut yourself away as evidenced in 'Dry Here For Weeks' - a sad song about alcoholism where it seems like the best days are over. Some solace is provided by knowing 'It's Not Your Fault', but the truth is, it is your fault and relationships are an ebb and flow of chance and confidence and self-change. 'Whiskey Momma', (a great addition to the album and a tip of the cap to local musician Rob St. Ours) is a cynical song about an absence of faith and celebrating life in the present moment. Tom Weights, obvious in it's acknowledgment, is out of place and is the weakest song on the album compared to it's similarly themed 'Then You'll Know' and 'I Got A Little More', which are ironic and twisting, simultaneously captivating and heart-wrenching musings on life bringing us once again to that scrapped car in that anonymous yard in the Shenandoah Valley (see Album Cover). The Dish Dogs are a Live band to be experienced in person and this album delivers as near to the front row as you could be. -Ken Gibson From the ashes of the band Red River Roller Coaster, a new breed of rock 'n' roller has emerged. One could describe them in a language common only to poor, laboring restaurateurs. You know the guy in the back that nobody talks to, that might only get tipped out a couple bucks, but has made sure your silverware is spotless? I'm talking about the dish dog. Singing the blues quietly to himself... no more. Patiently hoping some big shot record company guy will be in the dining room and suddenly hear the faint sounds of love and pain resonating off the plates and cups....no more. These five guys and a gal are out and about sharing their stories of pain, suffering, love and brief moments of bliss, that create our existence. True songs of real-life situations, that's what you'll hear on this CD. Songs about what is happening to all of us. 'The band's songs are musically diverse, with the musicians dabbling in electric guitar, banjar, harmonica, tambourine, drums, mandolin, acoustic guitar and the glue that ties it all together: the vocals.' -Rocktown Weekly The Dish Dogs are a pretty eclectic bunch. Lead singer, acoustic guitarist, writer, and composer Chris Howdyshell, leads the band with a heavy dose of fibber jabber. With Doug Pitts and Joshua Vana taking turns on Lead Guitar, you truly get a guitar-heavy album. Michael Bowman, a classically-trained guitarist, sits down on drums this time, adding mandolin on a couple tracks as well. (Little fingers)Kyle Oehmke plays electric bass and Lara Mack provides the gorgeous harmony. The Dish Dogs are known for their great live performances, so check out the CD and then find 'em in the hills and valleys of Virginia for a show.- Shop: odax

Lost Weekend
Paper Cameras began as a series of solo material from Michael Carothers after All the Dead Horses broke up. Four self released (and now out of print) e.p.'s with sounds ranging from a redneck Brian Eno fronting a Guided by Husker Du-ish Devo swam in the undercurrent of the Portland's scene sounding off with a fondness for I.R.S. era R.E.M. but raining rivers of over driven tube amps coping a feel on The Kinks or The Troggs. Slowly by very surely co-producer Sean Flora (The Shins, The Black Keys, Yeah Yeah Yeahs) fell into place as a band member. Josh Bretton's reoccurring lick-y guitar was found among a host of PDX's finest musicians also lending their talents in the studio as well as on stage. And then in 2008 things changed. Carothers decided to hand the microphone over to an old friend in Nashville. That person was Jerry Campbell (Millionaire Magicians, Spider Virus, Hands Down Eugene) and from that collaboration began a new phase in Paper Cameras, not out of step with previous work, but far more focused, simple and brooding. Their first album of psychedelic sounds caught between Love and Rockets and The Beach Boys is 'Lost Weekend'. There are two other e.p.'s currently in the works. Michael Carothers is also currently in Radiant Silvergun with Chuck Westmorland (The Kingdom) and played in Spectator Pump as well as hardcore bands with Hank III.- Shop: odax

Sound of One
Andy Garbi Debut solo album: the sound of one Label: Adventures in Sound Catalogue: AIS CD1001 "Inspirational...Garbi's extraordinary, multi-octave vocal range dazzles" Metro "Melodies turn into natural phenomena, into a foggy morning or a swelling ocean. Yet they are all pervaded by a glowing grace, a sublime beauty and dignity" Zillo Magazine "This is a remarkable album...It moves with much deeply felt sensitivity and beauty: with echoes of Samuel Barber's famous Adagio and Debussy's Des Pas sur la Neige plus Brian Eno's old school ambient" Newmusicreviews. Co.UK "Superb music" Musician Magazine "Beautiful" Hans Joachim Roedelius A deeply moving experience from the multi-award winning vocalist and composer, this haunting music embodies Garbi's experiences of extreme emotional and geographical environments. Featuring Andy's distinctive voice that spans almost four octaves and former Jazz Musician of the Year James Hesford on Cello, Violin and Viola, the sound of one is a Neo-classical work, reminiscent of the "holy minimalism" of Arvo Pärt, John Tavener and Henryk Górecki and also the crafted ambience of EG, 4AD and ECM labels. Recently featured on Radio 3's Late Junction, Classic FM's 'The Chill', '21st Century Classics' and The Chiller Cabinet playlist, Andy's dark, emotive style has been selected twice already to represent the UK for music internationally - gaining letters of commendation from the Royal Netherlands Embassy and the Arts Council of England. * WINNER * - PRS Foundation For New Music ATOM Award - (Advances Toward Original Music) - Channel 4 Ideasfactory Film Music Award - (selected by oscar winning film composer Stephen Warbeck) - Birmingham Conservatoire Masters Prize - About Andy Garbi Once Upon a Time... there was a zonally deaf boy whose ears bled. Doctors tried to convince his mother that he could not hear at all but she knew different. He was just prone to being lost in his own head - that still happens but that was then and this is now. Strange that he should choose music to fill his life - here's how it all came about... Voice Andy is no stranger to experimenting with voice. A sparsely equipped sound studio at Art College was the catalyst for him to start producing soundscapes for his films using nothing more than what he could create vocally. In the studio there was no equipment available that could produce anything remotely akin to what he wanted so instead he sang into samplers and used chants and breath to create percussion and texture. He developed these techniques whilst fronting bands and sang whatever came naturally to him. This included using unorthodox techniques and scales which enhanced this 'other-worldly' feel. Although he had no previous exposure to vocal techniques of different cultures the press started to compare him to singers such as Natasha Atlas and Lisa Gerrard. Keen to know more Andy sought out Invaders of the Heart and the 4AD label and also began to look at Bulgarian music, Hindustani classical, Mongolian throat singing and Arabic muezzine styles finding something of what he already did in all of them. This sparked off a journey to India in 2000 to explore this inherent quality in his voice. Andy spent time in Calcutta with vocal master Santanu Bandyopadhyay and even joined a band in the Himalayas comprising Tibetan and Ghurkha musicians (click here for more info). Andy's voice has been mapped out at spanning almost four octaves and not being trained in any particular genre has allowed him to experiment and develop his own idiosyncratic style. Sometimes he uses lyrics, at other times he uses phonetics, even singing invented words. Occasionally lyrics just seem to get in the way - this is when he prefers to create pure sounds because they seem somehow more raw, more direct than words. Andy has sung with the following artists/bands: Nigel Kennedy Live performances Cellorhythmics Starcatcher (Rise of the Cellorettes), Live Performances Suns of Arqa Live Tours Headhunters Lead Vocalist/Co-founder Celtarabia Lead Vocalist / Live Tours Celluloid Backing Vocalist ACE Dance & Music Vocalist/Composer Music Andy's musical world is a retinal image of film, fairy tale and cult children's TV. As well as using his voice Andy loves to use found sounds that he records binaurally in different locations from the clamour of industrial sites to the eerie stillness of remote areas of the world. He manipulates these in the studio and uses them as another instrument alongside classical and traditional instruments from several cultures together with music technology. His dark emotive style has been featured on Classic FM's Chiller Cabinet and Late Night Lisa, also garnering acclaim from the spheres of stage, screen and dance. Although he is currently exploring the ambient neo-classical world, his background in World Dance, Urban Fusion and his own Anglo-Asian heritage means that he is always seeking out new territory. It is this passion that has gained the support of leading artists in all fields of the performing arts. In just five years he has worked with the violin virtuoso Kennedy, award-winning playwright Chris O'Connell, and Birmingham Royal Ballet. He has also made headline appearances at festivals across Europe. Andy has always felt privileged to perform. As co-founder of the group Headhunters he has headlined one of the largest stages at Glastonbury Festival as well as European festivals such as Terschelling's Oerol in the Netherlands. With Headhunters, Suns of Arqa and Celtarabia he has performed at festivals such as The Big Chill and Trans Musicale in France on the same bill as The Prodigy, Jah Wobble, Roni Size, Loop Guru, Trans Global Underground, Banco de Gaia, System 7, Square Pusher, Mix Master Morris, Peat Bog Fairies, Baka Beyond, Kangaroo Moon and Roy Harper. Through his successes of working internationally with music from different cultures Andy was offered a prestigious invitation in 2003 to represent the UK for music. The commission was from a groundbreaking Anglo/Dutch performing Arts initiative and the resulting composition/performance earned him a commendation from both the Royal Netherlands Embassy and the Arts Council of England (click here for more information). Also in 2003 and despite having no formal training in music Andy was invited to study for a Masters degree in composition at Birmingham Conservatoire. He graduated with distinction in 2005 and was also awarded the Conservatoire Masters Prize. In the same twelve-month period Andy also won two other awards for composition from Channel 4 and the PRS Foundation (click here for more information). As well as his solo work Andy has always welcomed the opportunity to collaborate with other artists which has brought his style to an increasingly diverse audience. He sang at the BAC Burst festival (May '05) with physical Theatre group Gecko and progressive band Cellorhythmics and has most recently sung with guests from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Several new projects will see Andy working with Japanese Taiko Drumming, experimental theatre and a new Suns of Arqa album (see news page for up and coming collaborations). Counting Stars As They Fall
Ileana, new to the Los Angeles area, writes music as layered and beautiful as the New Mexico desert she hails from with combinations of pop and folk. Recognition by the New Mexico Music Industry Awards for 'Best Musical Production-Adult Contemporary' for the song 'Barely' from her CD 'Counting Stars as They Fall' has only added to the inertia that this singer/songwriter brings with her from a successful career in the southwestern United States. With a voice described as 'electrically charged velvet,' she blends pop and folk to create music that has already garnered a large fan base in the Southwest. She continues that trend in Los Angeles by performing songs that emphasize the dichotomy of the human condition- the battles between intelligence and emotions and of the choices we make in embracing or rejecting the circumstances of our lives. She flows seamlessly from songs of hope to those of loss leaving the audience feeling as though the message was just for them. It was this strength in songwriting and performance which led her to be selected as the Albuquerque periodical Weekly Alibi's 'Best Female Vocalist,' 'Best Songwriter' and 'Musician of the Year.' H e r B a c k g r o u n d Ileana explored these emotions as a student of psychology and earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of New Mexico. It was during this time that Ileana began to understand her passion for music and her need to express emotions through songwriting. Along this path she enjoyed a wide range of experiences, from lifeguard to waitress, crisis hotline to psychic hotline, each time glimpsing the diversity in people, each time returning her to her music. H e r H i's t o r y She began her professional career singing lead vocals with the band Ulterior Motive. That band broke up following a move to Austin, TX, just before they released their second LP titled '8minutes and 30 seconds.' Ileana then expanded her musical background by fronting the group Passion/Aggression with D. Whitten. This hard core venture released a two song demo in April (1997) comprised with Whitten's 'I Had Another Nightmare' and 'Cassandra Speaks,' both of which enjoyed radio airtime. She continued to develop her solo set and began playing coffeehouses and other small venues to a rapidly growing audience. Encouraged by her bolstering fan base she recorded a four-song demo in September (1998.) She assembled a talented group of musicians to record her first solo full length release 'Miles To Go' which was released in September (1999.) She continued to perform in intimate coffeehouse and bookstore settings as a solo acoustic artist while promoting her band and energetic stage show in bars and larger venues. 'Miles to Go' received radio airplay in local request shows and Ileana was asked numerous times to perform on local radio programs and music festivals. She took her acoustic show on the road to the Southwestern states of Arizona, Nevada, Colorado and California and the band hit the road to New Mexico cities and Texas. Each venue brought more fans to her music. Her audience includes fans from across the country and as far away as Italy and England. The release of her much anticipated new CD 'Counting Stars As They Fall' reaches toward the songwriting potential first hinted at in 'Miles To Go'. Ileana's storytelling captures the imagination of the listener and then frees it to explore avenues undreamed of. 'Counting Stars As They Fall' is a kaleidoscope of emotion with songs like 'Before You Knew' which captures the panic and joy of a budding relationship and 'Barely' which is reminiscence at the realization that a relationship is over. As mentioned previously, 'Barely' has already received recognition from the New Mexico Music Industry Awards by being named the 'Best Musical Production' in the Adult Contemporary category. 'I Would,' another song from this CD, was nominated as a finalist in the 'Best Song' category. This attention reflects what fans have already discovered- Ileana is quite an impressive artist. The success of this release prompted her to relocate to Los Angeles, California to expose a new audience to her music. To celebrate her impending relocation, she released 'Playing Solo' in December (2001,) a 12 song live acoustic CD titled 'Playing Solo', a compilation of performances from a variety of acoustic venues in her hometown of Albuquerque.
