Möglich wurde dies durch eine neue Berechnungsmethode der direkten Betriebskosten für Verkehrsflugzeuge, die zwischen 1958 und 1960 im Forschungszentrum der DDR-Luftfahrtindustrie von einem Gremium hervorragender Fachleute erarbeitet worden ist, um anschließend von einer speziellen Abteilung im Entwurfsbüro des VEB Flugzeugwerke Dresden auf alle damals bekannten Flugzeuge angewendet zu werden. Hunderte Typenblätter sind auf diese Weise entstanden, angefangen von der Douglas DC-3 bis zur Tupolew Tu-114. Das Besondere dieser Berechnungsmethode ist eine organische Verbindung aller im Flugbetrieb anfallenden Kosten mit den Flugleistungen eines Typs, woraus sich ein rein quantifizierter Leistungsvergleich qualitativ verschiedener Flugzeuge ergibt, der bis dahin nur sehr schwer angestellt werden konnte. Seitdem können die direkten Betriebskosten als das Kriterium der Wahrheit und damit als Kaufentscheidung für einen Flugzeugtyp gelten. Darüberhinaus läßt dieses Buch eine ganze Epoche der Zivilluftfahrt wieder lebendig werden. Es erzählt vom schwierigen Übergang vom Propellerantrieb zum Düsenantrieb, von den zu lösenden aerodynamischen und flugmechanischen Problemen, von den neuen Wegen, die in der Flugvorbereitung, Flugdurchführung und Flugüberwachung beschritten werden mußten. Und nicht zuletzt läßt es Augenzeugen, Testpiloten, Passagiere sowie Nachrichten-Agenturen mit ihren damaligen Meldungen zu Worte kommen. Am intensivsten hat sich der Autor mit der de Havilland Comet 1 befaßt - dem ersten Jetliner der Welt. Dieses formschöne Flugzeug begeisterte von 1949 bis 1954 die ganze Welt. Sehr ausführlich wird auf die Konstruktion und die Gründe der Comet-Katastrophen von 1954 eingegangen. Fotos, Zeichnungen und Schemata dokumentieren das Drama der falsch dimensionierten und schlecht konstruierten Druckkabine. Es schließen sich die Comet-1-Nachfolger Comet 2, Boeing Dash-80, Tupolew Tu-104, Caravelle, Boeing 707, Douglas DC-8, Dresden-152 und HFB-314 an.
