    Ein Jataka, Sanskrit für "Geburtsgeschichte", ist eine moralisch lehrreiche Geschichte und eine Erzählung aus dem Leben des Buddha. Im ursprünglichen Sinn umfasste der Begriff nur Geschichten aus dem Leben des historischen Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, später jedoch wurden immer mehr moralische Lehrgeschichten eingefügt, die sich auch auf frühere Existenzen und andere Daseinsformen des Buddha beziehen. Die wohl bekannteste der zahlreichen Wiedergeburtsgeschichten des Siddhartha Gautama ist die Vessantara Jataka, die in ganz Asien verbreitet ist. Gleichwohl ist die Geschichte des Prinzen Vessantara und seiner grenzenlosen Selbstlosigkeit sowohl im westlichen als auch asiatischen Kulturkreis Gegenstand teilweise leidenschaftlicher Debatten. Speziell in Thailand bewegt die exzessive Spendenfreude des Protagonisten nicht nur die Gemüter der intellektuellen und gesellschaftlichen Elite. Unabhängig von dieser speziellen und kontrovers diskutierten Wiedergeburtsgeschichte hat der grundsätzliche Wertekanon des Jatakam einen hohen ethisch-moralischen Wert und behält ungeachtet der vorhandenen sprachlichen und kulturellen Barrieren seinen bleibenden Wert.
