Come on
The first time I saw Michael Jarrett play was at a songswap at the Cheatham Street Warehouse in San Marcos, TX. A friend had dragged me there to hear one of her favorite songwriters. Michael was on the stage tuning his guitar when we arrived, neither of us had heard of him at the time, he was the 'new guy' in the three person swap. He sang his first song with his eyes closed and his feet alternately tapping. I couldn't be sure if he was trying to remember the words or just watching the events unravel in his head and then telling us about them. Either way, I knew what he was talking about. I had been there, or somewhere close, and I had now found the newest addition to my eclectic list of favorite songwriters. Michael's been playing around Texas, the Southeast, and the Southwest for about a year now with equally good acceptance from all over. Originally from Columbus, GA, he went to a small school in southeastern Tennessee where he began playing music and writing songs. For the past five years though, he has been travelling around, working jobs here and there, collecting images and stories and translating them to song. Press and fans have compared his writing to Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Leonard Cohen, John Prine and Arlo Guthrie. But there is some definite element to Michael's songs that is uniquely Michael Jarrett... some spiritual element. His lyrics, the strength of his songs, pour out as poetry that feels nearly like conversation. Phrases seem to show up at just the right places so that the listener knows exactly what it is that Michael is seeing. Then he continues to take you down the highway with him to meet the people he's met, and see the places he's seen, and know a little of the feelings that are there, but, to feel them in your own way. It is Michael's willingness to be vulnerable about his life and his faith that is one of the biggest reasons fans seem to be drawn to his songs. These songs have created a varied and loyal group of new listeners. Those who have seen him play, remember a too tall, too skinny, funny talkin', Georgia boy in loose fitting Wrangler's telling stories about songs you might call folk, but you'd probably call it something else. I don't know what though.- Shop: odax

Bobby Richards Avenue
Bobby Richards Avenue is a recipe for fun and reflection, you can't say that about many albums these days. With a Bob Dylan voice and aJohn Prine heart, Bobby Richards entertains you with stories about the coming of the end....again, a love that's sweet like poison and a love that opens your eyes. He asks you to stay for one more and croons with Melissa Endean in a duet about mistaking love for like. It's a ride through the country on a fall day with the top down, along Bobby Richards Avenue, and it just doesn't get much better than that. If you order the CD it has a bonus video of Sweet Like Poison on it.- Shop: odax

Living History
NUANCES, QUIRKS, STORIES, AND SUCH..... (written by Mari Rusnak, aka 'Torchy Blaine') Chuck Schaeffer doesn't believe in cookie-cutter almost-country music, so he's determined to create his own style..... Running on two speeds, 'Stop' and 'Go', Schaeffer and Co. Can slide into John Prine territory with good-old-days memories of Baseball Videos (listen closely, and you'll swear you can almost hear Prine's echoes of '.....ham-burgers! Cheese-burgers! Wilbur and Orville Wright! John Garfield in the afternoon, Montgomery Clift at night....' from his own 'Picture Show'), all the while dipping into Clint Black sharpness and Tim McGraw tones, but without the hokey mess.... Creating songs with just heart, a good time, and a little wisdom for good measure, Chuck is a man of determination and endurance. He invites us on his road of personal discovery, and it appears to be a trip where the songwriter is actively pulling all of these influences and ideas out of the atmosphere surrounding him, and with grit and guts, molds them into a legacy of cool delivery, a breath of fresh air, and a couple of nods to nostalgia. Don't be mistaken.... this ain't like no country you've ever heard of before.- Shop: odax

Gentle as the Sun
Gentle As The Sun is an album of original songs by Naomi Sommers, with one cover of a sixties country song, 'Sea Of Heartbreak'. Bluegrass, folk and alt-rock come together in the arrangements of these songs. Producer Jim Rooney (John Prine, Iris Dement, Nanci Griffith, Bonnie Raitt), has assembled an all-star cast of Nashville musicians as Naomi's backup band, recorded and engineered by David Fergusson (who recorded all of Johnny Cash/Rick Rubin's American albums, plus much more). **UPDATE: If you want to place an order for the CD directly from American Melody, you are welcome to call 1-203-457-0881. Ask for Phil, or just say, 'Hey, I want to order Naomi's new CD.' We'll be happy to hear from you. About Naomi: With roots in bluegrass, the blues, jazz, traditional folk, and old-time country, singer/songwriter Naomi Sommers is emerging as an exciting voice on the music scene. She grew up in a New England home full of music and instruments, performing since middle school with her parents and brother in the Sommers Rosenthal Family Band. Naomi's recording career started at age 5 when she sang her first harmony parts on an album of bluegrass music for children. Over the years she has sung and played flute, banjo, piano, and guitar on more than 15 records released on her father Phil's independent American Melody label, and has lent vocal and flute tracks to numerous recordings by other artists. In addition to the folk and bluegrass music she picked up at home, Naomi performed in orchestras and wind ensembles as a classically trained flutist, sang jazz with her brother Daniel Rosenthal's quartets since high school, and joined the gospel choir during college. After studying literature and music at the University of Connecticut, Naomi devoted herself full-time to writing and performing. She moved to Boston in 2001 to began a solo career. She played at favorite local venues including Club Passim, where she endeared herself to music fans and fellow musicians alike, and began lasting collaborations. She toured throughout the U.S. with songwriter Noam Weinstein as the duo Broken Dreams, and later followed some of the same routes as a Gray Sky Girl with Lisa Bastoni. In 2004, Naomi traveled to Texas to participate as a finalist in Kerrville Folk Festival's New Folk Songwriting Competition. More recently, Naomi was invited to be part of an upcoming PBS documentary, "On The Record," hosted by Sir George Martin and narrated by Kevin Spacey. She traveled to the home of Jean Ritchie to play a few songs with the influential folk singer and songwriter on film for the series. In July 2008, Naomi performed one of her songs at the GRAMMY Foundation's Starry Night Fundraiser in honor of Sir George Martin (producer of the Beatles and many others). At the event in Los Angeles, she shared the stage with Jeff Beck, Burt Bacharach, Chris Body, Tom Jones, Jimmie Webb and others. Since 2002, Naomi has put out three albums on American Melody. Two of these were solo albums, featuring original songs with eclectic backup by her family and other outstanding musicians. In 2006, she released a mesmerizing album of traditional and original "old-time country slowgrass" with the Gray Sky Girls. Now in 2008, Naomi has just released an album recorded in Nashville, produced by the acclaimed musician/producer Jim Rooney (John Prine, Iris Dement, Nanci Griffith, Bonnie Raitt). She is thrilled to present this collection of songs, accompanied by some of Nashville's finest musicians in addition to a few of her trusted friends and family.- Shop: odax

Speakeasy
Formed in central Ohio by Adam Brooks Dudding, BuckTown KickBack made it's debut in August of 2002. Since it's creation, 'BTKB' has entertained thousands from neighborhood bars and college watering holes to music halls and amphitheaters throughout the Midwest including shows in Chicago, Louisville, Nashville, and Austin. They've also had the pleasure of opening up for national and international acts like ALABAMA on their 'Farewell Tour' at The Germain Amphitheatr, Railroad Earth at the Newport Music Hall and Junior Brown at Little Brother's in Ohio. BuckTown KickBack's debut album SPEAKEASY hit Americana Radio stations Fall 2005 and raced up the Americana Charts landing at #1 on the Roots Report Folk Airplay Chart, #6 on the Roots Top 100, #33 on the Internet Airplay Chart and #58 on the AMA Airplay Chart (700) the week of December 12, 2005. Their music, just like their live performances, showcases their intoxicating blend of the old and the new with intelligent songwriting and incredible musicianship. The band is currently preparing for the release of their follow-up studio album 'Lost In Your Own Hometown'. Here's what some other folks say... "Founded three years ago in Columbus, BTKB slide easily from Bluegrass to Country to a rootsy Americana at the drop of a wide-brimmed hat...The quintet received great regional for their recently released debut full-length, SPEAKEASY. The country palette of the Grateful Dead, The Roots Pop spark of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band" -Citybeat "The landscape of Speakeasy is a rich, open countryside, ambitious with the troubadourian spirit of old-country...Bucktown Kickback tread familiar ground with their signature footprint. From the nostalgic yearn of "A Girl Like You" to the swift gallop of "Meta" this repertoire of American folklore is flawless." - Ryan Hoffer, A&R / Shut Eye Records, Inc. "Their 15-track album is characterized by subtle variations on the standard alternative-country template - all warm melodies, sparsely arranged, and gentle harmonies dressing the plaintive lyrics...Notable flourishes abound on SPEAKEASY which is innovative without sacrificing cohesion. Bluegrass creeps in on 'Since You Been Gone' and the instrumental stomp 'Big Sand Furnace', and jazzy bass work under-girds 'Punch In The Nose,' a languid, swampy triumph." -The Sentinel Tribune '...The group has been a steady presence on the local and regional club circuit, honing already impressive skills. Their album is an excellent collection of 15 down-home originals that blur the line between bluegrass, folk, pop and boozy country-blues. Echoes of the Grateful Dead's Workingman's Dead, John Prine and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band run throughout SPEAKEASY, but the group is smart enough to take those as starting points.'" -The Columbus Dispatch '...Drawing from a wellspring of inspirational sources ranging from bluegrass to Dixieland, the five-piece outfit has been churning out pleasantly eclectic rustic sounds for about three years...' -The Alive 'This is an alt-bluegrass band from central Ohio. We have seen them live, and enjoyed them very much (the show was outside and free, yet better than most $50-per-ticket acts floating around). As we heard them play, many bands came to mind, such as the Flying Burrito Brothers, Dillard and Clark, Railroad Earth, and of course the Byrds....check them out, since they play creative original Americana tunes.' - Byrds.net.- Shop: odax

Departures & Arrivals
I was the kid in 'Almost Famous,' dabbling in rock criticism in college and studying musical minutae but ultimately giving it up to find my own musical path. I've been writing songs and gigging since my SUNY Potsdam days in the late 1970s and early 1980s. I was raised on the Beatles, however, it was my discovery of Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen in the mid-1970s that fueled my desire to create music. Through them I learned that music could be more than entertainment, it could provide an avenue for expression and act as an agent of change. Bruce and Dylan also led me to other great artists. By tracing their influences, I found my way to Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash, and Hank Williams. My style of music is either rock and roll with a twang or country with a rock-and-roll edge. It depends on the audience, the venue, or my mood at any given time. Many of my favorite songwriters hail from Texas. These include Steve Earle, Guy Clark, Nanci Griffith, and Townes Van Zandt. Other Other influences include John Hiatt, Nick Lowe, and Tom T. Hall. I have played in various Long Island bands since the mid-1980s, among them the Rockerfellers, the Lincolns, Roy Wilson's Honky Tonk Boys, and Good Dog Nigel (named after a particularly twisted John Lennon poem). I have recorded three CDs, 'Every Country Road . . . Every City Street,' 'Departures and Arrivals,' and the unreleased 'Nice Problem to Have.' My wife Linda and I live on Long Island with our thre cats Fonzie, Mookie, and Ella. Influences: My big four: Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Presley, and the Beatles. After that, in no particular order: John Fogerty, Neil Young, Chuck Berry, Rolling Stones, The Band, Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds, Rockpile, Los Lobos, The Jayhawks, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Tom T. Hall, Buddy Holly, Joe Ely, Townes Van Zandt, Lyle Lovett, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Nanci Griffith, The Mavericks, Tom Waits, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Dwight Yoakam, Gram Parsons, Woody Guthrie, Eagles, Rodney Crowell, Guy Clark, Everly Brothers, Roger Miller, George Strait, Eddie Cochran, Ray Davies, Ron Sexsmith, Chris Isaak, Sam Cooke, John Prine, Roy Orbison, Ryan Adams, The Smithereens, Squeeze, Jimmy Cliff, James Maddock, the Decemberists, Brendan Benson, Elton John.- Shop: odax

Signs & Signifiers
