A Colony Sprung from Hell: Pittsburgh and the Struggle for Authority on the Western Pennsylvania Frontier, 1744-1794 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 684min
The early settlement of the region around Pittsburgh was characterized by a messy collision of personal, provincial, national, and imperial interests. Driven by the efforts of Europeans, Pennsylvanians, Virginians, and Indians, almost everyone attempted to manipulate the clouded political jurisdiction of the region. A Colony Sprung from Hell traces this complex struggle. The events and episodes that make up the story highlight the difficulties of creating and consolidating authority along the frontier, where the local populations acceptance or denial of authority determined the extent to which any government could impose its will. Ultimately, what was at stake was the nature of authority itself. Author Daniel P. Barr demonstrates that deep divisions marked efforts to exercise power over the western Pennsylvania frontier and limited the effectiveness of such attempts. They developed roughly along provincial lines, owing to a fierce competition between Pennsylvania and Virginia to incorporate the region into their colonies. This jurisdictional dispute permeated many social and political levels, impacting all those who sought power and influence along the western Pennsylvania frontier. Individuals, businesses, provincial governments, and British policymakers competed for jurisdiction in the political and legal arenas, while migrants, settlers, and Indians opposed one another on the ground in a contest that was far more confrontational and violent. Although the participants and the nature of the conflict changed over time, the fundamental question of who was going to make the important decisions regarding the region remained unsettled and unanswered, resulting in a consistent pattern of discord and contention. A Colony Sprung from Hell is an important contribution to the understanding of power and authority along the late colonial frontier. The book is published by The Kent State University Press. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Michael Kazalski. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/063909/bk_acx0_063909_sample.mp3.
[Luther's Provocation for the Present Day. Bible - Christian Existence - Politics] The Reformation is more than Luther, but without Luther there would have been no Reformation. He was a radical theologian who inquired after the biblical foundation of the faith. Today in particular, the explosive force of his theology should be brought to awareness. In a time of religious indifference, and of a trivialized Christendom, we need more than ever a new form of radical theology, that asks passionately after God and heeds the word of the Gospel. Martin Luther's God is and remains a provocation. That provocation is at the center of this book about Luther's understanding of Christian freedom, his interpretation of Scripture, his conception of work and vocation, and his theology of the political. In this project, the internationally renowned systematic theologian from the University of Vienna follows up his confrontational book from 2017, »Für die Vernunft. Wider Moralisierung und Emotionalisierung in Politik und Kirche«.- Shop: buecher

The Soviet Union During the Brezhnev Era: The History of the USSR Under Leonid Brezhnev , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 119min
For 30 years, much of the West looked on with disdain as the Bolsheviks took power in Russia and created and consolidated the Soviet Union. As bad as Vladimir Lenin seemed in the early 20th century, Joseph Stalin was so much worse that Churchill later remarked of Lenin, “Their worst misfortune was his birth... their next worst his death.”Stalin had ruled with an iron fist for nearly 30 years before his death in 1953, which may or may not have been murder, just as Stalin was preparing to conduct another purge. With his death, Soviet strongman and long-time Stalinist Nikita Khrushchev (1894-1971), became the Soviet premier.A barely known figure outside of the Eastern bloc, Khrushchev was derided as a buffoon by one Western diplomat and mocked for his physical appearance by others, but any Western hopes that he would prove a more conciliatory figure than Stalin were quickly snuffed out as the hard-line Khrushchev embraced confrontational stances.Personal histrionics aside, Khrushchev meant business when dealing with the West, especially the United States and its young president, John F. Kennedy. After sensing weakness and a lack of fortitude in Kennedy, Khrushchev made his most audacious and ultimately costly decision by attempting to place nuclear warheads at advanced, offensive bases located in Cuba, right off the American mainland. As it turned out, the Cuban Missile Crisis would show the Kennedy Administration’s resolve, force Khrushchev to back down, and ultimately sow the seeds of Khrushchev’s fall from power. By the time he died in 1971, he had been declared a non-citizen of the nation he had ruled for nearly 20 years.Leonid Brezhnev became First Secretary of the Communist Party in the Soviet Union in late 1964 after a plot to oust Khrushchev. Little is remembered in the public imagination about Brezhnev in comparison to Mikhail Gorbachev, Vladimir Lenin, or Joseph Stalin, despite the fact Brezhnev ruled the USSR from 1964-1982, lo ungekürzt. Use the Power of Arguing to Win Your Next Negotiation: How to Develop the Skill of Effective Arguing in a Negotiation in Order to Get the Best Possible Outcome , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 59min
As individuals we have a tendency to shy away from getting involved in arguments. We view them as being confrontational and filled with emotions. However, when it comes to negotiating and when we have a different view of the world than the other side of the table, it turns out that a little bit of arguing might be just what the doctor ordered. What you'll find inside: Six things a sales negotiator needs to know about using threats during a negotiation Get what you want by bringing a purple monkey to your next negotiation Legal intimidation: Five ways to defend against it Negotiators need to learn how to deal with experts Every negotiation is a fast-flowing affair. This means that a skilled negotiator knows to not make up his or her mind too early on in the negotiations so that they can remain flexible and open to new ideas. If we get backed into a corner during the negotiations, we may consider using threats to work our way out. However, as with everything in life, there are ramifications to using threats. The good news about a negotiation is that as a negotiator you don't have to be perfect. This means that you are not required to know everything. Additionally, during the negotiation if it suits you, you can act irrationally. Do be careful about coming across as being too smooth of a negotiator because if you do, then nobody will like you. During a negotiation you'll have many decisions that you'll have to make. Taking the high ground is one that always seems to pay off. Using standards to back up your position can help establish your credibility. To take this one step further, you need to be aware of any applicable regulations and laws that pertain to the issues being negotiated and you need to use them to the fullest extent. ungekürzt. Moynihan's Moment: America's Fight Against Zionism as Racism , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 720min
On November 10, 1975, the General Assembly of United Nations passed Resolution 3379, which declared Zionism a form of racism. Afterward, a tall man with long, graying hair, horned-rim glasses, and a bowtie stood to speak. He pronounced his words with the rounded tones of a Harvard academic, but his voice shook with outrage: "The United States rises to declare, before the General Assembly of the United Nations, and before the world, that it does not acknowledge, it will not abide by, it will never acquiesce in this infamous act." This speech made Daniel Patrick Moynihan, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, a celebrity, but as Gil Troy demonstrates in this compelling new book, it also marked the rise of neo-conservatism in American politics - the start of a more confrontational, national-interest-driven foreign policy that turned away from Kissinger's detente-driven approach to the Soviet Union--which was behind Resolution 3379. Moynihan recognized the resolution for what it was: an attack on Israel and a totalitarian assault against democracy, motivated by anti-Semitism and anti-Americanism. While Washington distanced itself from Moynihan, the public responded enthusiastically: American Jews rallied in support of Israel. Civil rights leaders cheered. The speech cost Moynihan his job - but soon won him a U.S. Senate seat. Troy examines the events leading up to the resolution, vividly recounts Moynihan's speech, and traces its impact in intellectual circles, policy making, international relations, and electoral politics in the ensuing decades. The mid-1970s represent a low-water mark of American self-confidence, as the country, mired in an economic slump, struggled with the legacy of Watergate and the humiliation of Vietnam. Moynihan's Moment captures a turning point, when the rhetoric began to change and a more muscular foreign policy began to find expression, a policy that continues to shape international relations to this day. ungekürzt. Don't Say That at Work: Lessons Learned from a Lifetime of Mistakes , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 111min
An eye-opening guide to the communication mistakes we all make and what to say instead. Have you ever been told that your communication style is too confrontational? Do you have problems persuading your coworkers and managers without sounding arrogant or condescending? Have you said something and immediately regretted it? Have you ever said something you can't take back? Have you ever wondered later, "What was I thinking?"We have all been there. We all make mistakes. We all suffer from a lapse in good judgment from time to time. Sometimes these mistakes are a one-off, but when made repeatedly can lead to a domino effect of problems. When that happens, it can be hard to recover. The important thing, as professionals, is that we learn from our mistakes and hopefully do not make the same ones again, thus stopping the dominoes before they all fall. I've been making the mistakes contained in this book for almost three decades as a professional software developer. I was fired from on my first jobs for being too arrogant and also asking too many questions. I once nearly lost my job because I knew better than my leadership. One mistake even nearly got me arrested! All these stories and more are in this book. Had I never learned from these mistakes, they probably would have been the end of my career. Fortunately, we humans are good at learning from experience. This book is your chance to learn from mine, and hopefully have a good laugh at my expense from time to time. In fact, I hope you do laugh. I often look back, chuckle, and wonder what had possessed me to say something. The Marine Corps Way of War: The Evolution of the U.S. Marine Corps from Attrition to Maneuver Warfare in the Post-Vietnam Era , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 537min
The Marine Corps Way of War: The Evolution of the U.S. Marine Corps from Attrition to Maneuver Warfare in the Post-Vietnam Era examines the evolving doctrine, weapons, and capability of the United States Marine Corps during the four decades since our last great conflict in Asia. As author Anthony Piscitelli demonstrates, the USMC has maintained its position as the nation’s foremost striking force while shifting its thrust from a reliance upon attrition to a return to maneuver warfare. Piscitelli methodically explains the evolution by using traditional and first-person accounts by the prime movers of this paradigm shift. In Indochina, for example, the Marines not only held territory but engaged in now-legendary confrontational battles at Hue and Khe Sanh. As a percentage of those engaged, the Marines suffered higher casualties than any other branch of the service. In the post-Vietnam assessment, however, the USMC absorbed Sun Tzu’s aspects of Asian warfare and returned to its historical DNA in fighting “small wars” to evolve a superior alternative to the battlefield. The institutionalization of maneuver philosophy began with the Marine Corps’ educational system, analyzing the actual battlespace of warfare - be it humanitarian assistance, regular set-piece battles, or irregular guerrilla war - and the role that the leadership cadre of the Marine Corps played in this evolutionary transition from attrition to maneuver. This change has sometimes been incorrectly portrayed (including by the Congressional Military Reform Caucus) as a disruptive or forced evolution. Analysis from former commandants of the Marine Corps to junior officers on the ground in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere demonstrate otherwise. The ability of the Marines to impact the battlefield - and help achieve our strategic goals - has only increased during the post-Cold War era.Throughout The Marine Corps Way of War: The Evolution of the U.S. Marine Corps from Attrition to ungekürzt. Meditate Your Way to Success: The Definitive Guide to Mindfulness, Focus and Meditation , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 190min
Most entrepreneurs and people in business misunderstand the purpose and power of meditation and how it complements and energizes business leaders. It is often thought that meditation is a tool to relax, a tool to rid unwanted stress, and a means to dilute energies that activate the mind. All that is mostly untrue.Meditation is not just about seeking serenity and harmony. It is not about donning a veil of peace and relinquishing confrontational means. It is not just about contemplating the higher truths and the philosophical meaning of life. Meditation is about empowering your physical presence with the powers of the universe. It’s about becoming the force of attraction instead of merely learning the laws of attraction. It is about seeking and uniting the divine energy within you so you may leap forward and make your inspiration take form and take flight. Meditation is both the object and the subject of silence; it is the nexus of the universe and the energy that binds it. Energies flow in waves and transmit in vibrations. How you vibrate is more important than the words you choose.Meditation gives you a path to the right vibration and is best taken when the mind is disciplined and silent. Words and ideas that echo in the head are mere distractions that mindfulness and focus need to arrest.Meditation is the single most important discipline you need if you want to conquer your destiny. Is this audiobook for you? This audiobook is dedicated to those who want to smash through the glass ceilings they have put over themselves. Greatness is already within you, you just need to learn how to release it. This audiobook will teach you exactly how to extract every ounce of greatness you have, and then some.Don’t wait any longer!
