Coming of Age in the Other America , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 653min
Coming of Age in the Other America shows that despite overwhelming odds, some disadvantaged urban youth do achieve upward mobility. Drawing from 10 years of fieldwork with parents and children who resided in Baltimore public housing, sociologists Stefanie DeLuca, Susan Clampet-Lundquist, and Kathryn Edin highlight the remarkable resiliency of some of the youth who hailed from the nation's poorest neighborhoods and show how the right public policies might help break the cycle of disadvantage. Coming of Age in the Other America illuminates the profound effects of neighborhoods on impoverished families. The authors conducted in-depth interviews and fieldwork with 150 young adults, and found that those who had been able to move to better neighborhoods - either as part of the Moving to Opportunity program or by other means - achieved much higher rates of high school completion and college enrollment than their parents. About half the youth surveyed reported being motivated by an "identity project" - or a strong passion such as music, art, or a dream job - to finish school and build a career. Coming of Age in the Other America presents a sensitive, nuanced account of how a generation of ambitious but underprivileged young Baltimoreans has struggled to succeed. It both challenges long-held myths about inner-city youth and shows how the process of "social reproduction" - where children end up stuck in the same place as their parents-is far from inevitable. The book is published by the Russell Sage Foundation. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Nancy Peterson. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/086578/bk_acx0_086578_sample.mp3. Thinking Critically About the Kennedy Assassination (eBook, PDF)
Thinking Critically About the Kennedy Assassination uses the tools of critical thinking, historical research, and philosophical inquiry to debunk the many myths and conspiracy theories surrounding JFK's shocking and untimely death. As we approach the 60th anniversary of the violent public assassination of President John F. Kennedy, over half of all Americans surveyed continue to believe that he was killed by a conspiracy involving multiple assassins. Through its reasoned and detailed analysis of the content and evolution of JFK conspiracy narratives, this book also serves as a comprehensive case study of paranoid reasoning and modern mythmaking. The book's opening chapters lay out the "official" academic consensus concerning the Kennedy assassination (better known as the "Lone Gunman Theory") and discuss the origins of popular interpretations of Kennedy's life and death, such as the nostalgic myth of "Camelot," the unsympathetic "Irish Mafia" narrative, and the many conspiracy theories critical of both. Subsequent sections scrutinize the alleged motives of leading conspiracy suspects, the ballistic, forensic, and medical evidence related to JFK's murder, and the most popular "proofs" of an enduring government cover- up. The book concludes that no clear evidence exists to suggest that JFK was the victim of a conspiracy and ends with a discussion of the causes and consequences of paranoid thinking in contemporary public discourse. This volume will appeal to students of history, politics, psychology, and cultural and media studies, and to a broader audience interested in American history, critical thinking, and conspiracy thinking.- Shop: buecher

Reinventing Masculinity: The Liberating Power of Compassion and Connection , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 323min
“A wonderful book for thinking about how to release ourselves from crippling processes. It’s time for men - and for all of us - to stand up and say, ‘Give us back our full humanity, give us back our dignity.’” (Paul Gilbert, PhD, author of The Compassionate Mind)In a recent FiveThirtyEight poll, 60 percent of men surveyed said society puts pressure on men to behave in a way that is unhealthy or bad. Men account for 80 percent of suicides in the United States, and three in 10 American men have suffered from depression. Ed Adams and Ed Frauenheim say a big part of the problem is a model of masculinity that’s become outmoded, and even dangerous, to both men and women. The conventional notion of what it means to be a man - what Adams and Frauenheim call “confined masculinity” - traps men in an emotional straitjacket; steers them toward selfishness, misogyny, and violence; and severely limits their possibilities. As an antidote, they propose a new paradigm: liberating masculinity. It builds on traditional masculine roles like the protector and provider, expanding men’s options to include caring, collaboration, emotional expressivity, an inclusive spirit, and environmental stewardship.Through hopeful stories of men who have freed themselves from the strictures of confined masculinity, interviews with both leaders and everyday men, and practical exercises, this book shows the power of a masculinity defined by what the authors call the five Cs: curiosity, courage, compassion, connection, and commitment.Men will discover a way of being that fosters healthy, harmonious relationships at home, at work, and in the world. ungekürzt. The Domestication of Cats: The History of the Only Domesticated Felidae Species and Their Relationship with Humans , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 105min
Mankind's obsession with felines is an enigma in and of itself. Unlike dogs, famously known as man's most excitable, trustworthy, and loyal friend, cats are oftentimes indifferent, guarded, and yet finicky little furry creatures that only yearn for attention and affection when one is neck-deep in work or otherwise preoccupied. And still, people adore them all the same.In a recent poll that surveyed 600 American college students, 60 percent of the participants identified themselves as “dog lovers” whereas only 11 percent pledged their love for cats. The remaining 29 percent regarded themselves as fans of both critters or fans of neither. Be that as it may, there is said to be anywhere between a staggering 88 - 94 million pet cats in the United States alone, which eclipses the roughly 84 - 90 million pet dogs in the country. In the same breath, while more households around the world share a roof with a canine companion, as reflected in the results of this particular survey and most other similar polls, more cat owners have taken it upon themselves to look after more than one pet. This just goes to show that the passion that cat lovers have for their feline friends is evidently comparable with, if not arguably greater than that of dog lovers as a whole. The Domestication of Cats: The History of the Only Domesticated Felidae Species and Their Relationship with Humans examines the origins of this exceptional bond, including scientific and mythical theories, and explores how cats were domesticated. ungekürzt. Fritjof Capra and the Systems View of Life: Short Biography, Book Reviews, and Comments: Great Minds, Book 3 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 765min
Fritjof Capra and the Systems View of Life (Great Minds, Book 3): 2017 Revised, Updated, and Reformatted Edition is a passionate study about the great contemporary physicist and a review of all of his published books, including extensive quotes. The author considers Fritjof Capra as one of the most important authors on new science and systems research and considers as genius Capra's unique gift to formulate and explain complex scientific and philosophical insights and interrelations in a way that the educated listener can understand. He sees certain parallels in Capra's life in the lives of Albert Einstein and Wilhelm Reich who, like him, were from Germanic origin and after their immigration to the United States only wrote and published in English. The author especially lauds Capra's basically non-judgmental worldview and his ability to understand people from ultra-orthodox to very liberal with the same generosity and magnanimity. This can be seen, inter alia, in a lesser known volume, entitled Uncommon Wisdom which is a recollection of conversations with remarkable people, a kaleidoscope of anecdotes from the lives of truly lively and communicative humans. The author especially notes Capra's merit is to have introduced the systems view of life to scientific research, while he is not the originator of the idea, which was mainly developed by Ludwig von Bertalanffy, Ilya Prigogine, Humberto Maturana, and Francisco Varela. But Capra has carefully surveyed and summarized this important research that is generally difficult to grasp to the non-scientific listener, and has rendered the important idea accessible for the interested lay audience. ungekürzt. The Palaeolithic Origins of Human Burial (eBook, ePUB)
Humans are unique in that they expend considerable effort and ingenuity in disposing of the dead. Some of the recognisable ways we do this are visible in the Palaeolithic archaeology of the Ice Age. The Palaeolithic Origins of Human Burial takes a novel approach to the long-term development of human mortuary activity - the various ways we deal with the dead and with dead bodies. It is the first comprehensive survey of Palaeolithic mortuary activity in the English language. Observations in the modern world as to how chimpanzees behave towards their dead allow us to identify 'core' areas of behaviour towards the dead that probably have very deep evolutionary antiquity. From that point, the palaeontological and archaeological records of the Pliocene and Pleistocene are surveyed. The core chapters of the book survey the mortuary activities of early hominins, archaic members of the genus Homo, early Homo sapiens, the Neanderthals, the Early and Mid Upper Palaeolithic, and the Late Upper Palaeolithic world. Burial is a striking component of Palaeolithic mortuary activity, although existing examples are odd and this probably does not reflect what modern societies believe burial to be, and modern ways of thinking of the dead probably arose only at the very end of the Pleistocene. When did symbolic aspects of mortuary ritual evolve? When did the dead themselves become symbols? In discussing such questions, The Palaeolithic Origins of Human Burial offers an engaging contribution to the debate on modern human origins. It is illustrated throughout, includes up-to-date examples from the Lower to Late Upper Palaeolithic, including information hitherto unpublished.- Shop: buecher

Dude , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 331min
The high-stepping mare balked, tossing a proud but weary head, and whinnied a protest as the dust-covered gambler stood high in his stirrups and surveyed the forbidding terrain in front of him. A hundred miles.... Maybe more, he thought. A burned and blasted desert...filled with hostiles, and no water but what he carried in the two canteens slung over his saddle horn. A wide-open inside straight if ever there was one, he cursed angrily, knowing there was no choice but to draw to it despite the odds. Not more than an hour behind him were nine, maybe 10, hired guns. The gambler gritted his teeth and roweled the lathered flanks of the mare. She reared at this latest outrage, plunged, and then resigned herself to the rider's choice. Gingerly, hesitantly, she stepped out onto the rocky, splintered surface. Wes Farley knew the mare was trying to warn him that death waited for both of them out there under that blistering sun. If Wes prided himself on being a gentleman, despite his disheveled finery, he was also aware that the mare considered herself a lady, and not used to the treatment she'd received over the past few days. She was a creature that thrived on pampering and was bred for speed and beauty. Wes suppressed with difficulty a natural feeling of guilt for pushing her so hard. While nothing might catch her over the short haul, almost anything on four legs could outdistance her in time...and that was a commodity Wes Farley was critically short of. A week now they had been dogging him...ever since Central City and the game.... ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Edward Easton.
