Purpose- Analyze This
TANK aka Jason Lipp began spittin back in the late 80's...Really the hip hop vibe might be said to have been born in him, as he was the dude breakdancing at the kindergarten recital when everyone else was doin somethin else. You could call that hammin up the spot or jus plain ol releasin energy.. Prolly, it's a combination of both that could predict future events. Spittin his way thru cafeteria lines, cafeteria courtyards, English classes, gym classes, science and math classes, TANK LIPP brought hip hop and rap to the high school arena early on. Shortly after the times when he was breakdancin up homecoming dances handin the DJ copies of CRAIG MACKs flava in YA EAR, and spreadin the sounds of MOBB DEEP's Shook Ones thru the hallways of Oviedo High School- TANK aka JASON LIPP- neighborhood knapsacker set up shop to spread his own flava in peoples ears..After recordin his first joints at the age of 13 with Omar Radwan and Fred Hamilton, TANK LIPP put notice out on the streets that he was serious about trying to do this rap thing. In 1997, after polishin up the craft, and maturing wiser in age- TANK LIPP and OMAR RADWAN ( back then- PHAROAH MAGNETIC) linked up with SUPER SCIENTIFIC aka DANNY D. (who is known today as UNKNOWN SUSPECT).. The three dabbled into there explorations on the techniques 1200 and triton keyboards- each finding a niche that they would later contribute to the group.. The three linked up with other emcees FARENHEIGHT and TONY MILLZ ( now TONE DA REFEREE) - forming a group back then known as TEAM EXTRAVAGANT aka TEAM ELEMENTAL aka FIFTH BREED ( which is now reffered to today as (the CALICO SILO).....TEAM EXTRAVAGANT was an immense concoction of raw talent and energy, whom spent cipher pon cipher strengthening skills day n day out, night afta night.//From rockin porches to libraries, school buses and parties, hallways, bathrooms, closets( literally to enhance mic sounds when recordin), smoked out cars, fields and meadows, beaches, the ciphas reigned hott and magnetic always. In fact, there was soo much energy surroundin this group that it was just assumed that after high school an album was gonna be put out, and just a matter of when..Well, 'when', somehow dissipated, and people moved on to different jobs and work and school, and business ventures and a strong fan base in '98 of local oviedo and orlando heads dissipated as they grew into a group that seemed like it might never reunite...The love for hip hop neva died, but the act of makin music temporarily ceased.....With the acception of freestyles TEAM EXTRAVAGANT stopped puttin out mixtapes and rockin the recordin aspects..In 2003, TANK LIPP and OMAR THE RADWAN aka ( DJ 4th Dynasty aka PHAROAH MAGNETIC established new quarters for the ol TEAM to reunite as the CALICO SILO in ( THE CALICO SILO)..Calico SILO was the name given to the studio rebirthed in 2003..The talents joinin in the festivities were TANK aka JASON LIPP, OMAR THE RADWAN aka DJ 4th DYNASTY,TONY MILLZ aka (TONE DA REFEREE) and WARREN ELLIOT.. EGGED ON by fan members such as EWDEGE STEPLORD aka MIKE EVANS and LOU 'ROCK' - the SILO pumped out an EP/ MIXTAPE sort of GIG. It neva was formally pushed into the public, but the select people that it was passed around to got outstanding reviews....From the ill cuts, to the selection of beats spit on, to the mastery of the rhymes, to the stepping up of new productions on the tritons etc.-it seemed like the raw talent was still there...The team just needed the time to be alloted and with everyones schedules and separate lives being led, a dope revival of an ol school dope HIP HOP movement -TEAM EXTRAVAGANT - was progressively dissipating again...In October of 2003 TANK LIPP lost his father, and the SILO known AS CALICO SILO temporarily shut down.....The spirit of TANKs' dad was moving TANK and 'O, but between grief and movin on and living life there still seemed like little time to make any dreams happen..The dreams were still there and the talks between em were inspirational and motivational..'O set out for a lil hiyadus in Egypt and when he returned TANK LIPP and OMAR 4th DYNASTY RADWAN, teamed back up with SUPER SCIENTIFIC aka UNKNOWN SUSPECT and went to town on the debut TANK album REINCARNATED which was released last APRIL 2007.. That was a meaninful rebirth on many different avenues for all three of us...The album was a very personal debut TANK album that just happened to feature a great amount of contribution from two of the original members of TEAM EXTRAVAGANT- OMAR THE RADWAN and UNKNOWN SUSPECT..The concept was to show that no matter wut struggles life hands you, that there is always a reason to keep pushin thru, whether it's losing your dad in TAKE ME TO MY DAD, or realizing that there are plenty of fish in the sea after a bad breakup in WHORE, or that every day on earth is a gift and blessing we must cherish in TODAYS A GIFT, or just to hang tough and not give up when running in circles with the same problems in RUNNING IN PLACE..Due to the personal and highly emotional at some points -content of the debut of the REINCARNATED album it was probably a little difficult for people to feel the total energy and fire in this dope TEAM EXTRAVAGANT hip hop movement renewed by TANK...Certainly, the deep insights and writing talents of TANK LIPP were appreciated regardless of the fact that it wasn't really an album packed with numerous BANGERS. The beats were hott too, but it lost some of it's HIP HOP banga swagga due to the somber moods of many of the tracks. Nonetheless it put TANK and crew back on the map, respected, and definately gave a chill supply of audio (13 tracks) fa people to sit back and ponder about life and decisions that are made and the consequences of those decisions- and ultimately that there is always a reason to push on-because what doesn't keep u down at the bottom, only makes u stronger when u rise back to the top... Instinctively realizing that REINCARNATED didn't completely captivate everything that TEAM EXTRAVAGANT always stood for over the years, including ill ass scratching, and more rugged hip hop tracks, the immediate release of REINCARNATED left TANK simultaneously back in the booth firin up new tracks...This time the goal was to simultaneously supply an answer to the 'HIP HOP IS DEAD MOVEMENT' that circulated around the nation instigated by artists such as NAS..The debate was heated and many sides, angles, and opinions to the debate were shared by a variety of well known industry artists-NAS, LUDACRIS etc... TANK had his views too, and invigorated with motivation to show OZONE and the rest of the world the natural HIP HOP fire in him, he didn't want to leave the status quo as personal from just REINCARNATED, but he wanted to embrace the status HEATED wit his own hip hop flare-from more hip hop sounding beats, doper hip hop punchlines, more raw flows and hooks, and tighter rhyme schemes combined with an ever progressive TANK sound which can only be understood if u listen to the distinctive voice that is TANK when he raps...There is a BIG POPPA swag to the voice, wit rhyme scheme mucho PUNN-IAN ( BIG PUN) lol, making TANK a pleasurable sound to underground and commercial listening ears. Unfortunately at the time of this albums recording and production phase the CALICO SILO didn't split apart in spirit and friendship, but in actual physical location-AGAIN. Omar moved back temporarily to the middle east getting high tech over in ABU DABI, and UNKNOWN SUSPECT moved out of ORLANDO and out of state to a location that needs to be left unknown :) ..( yeah that's right the beats to hott and u will want to jack him for the production-so the location can't be disclosed :) ..So the goals of giving the project that TEAM EXTRAVAGANT sound with the ill nasty cuts and scratches wasn't possible...Instead of trying to shop a style that we could distinctively create on our own-with our own scratches, there is minimal scratches on this album..Sorry to disaapoint...W- Shop: odax

Blood and Biscotti
Fundamentally, B & B are both children of Rock 'n' Roll, but the repertoire of original songs they've cooked up together combines a variety of musical flavors, from folk to rock, from ballads to blues. The 'meat of their musical stew' is the solid backbeat of rock and roll. Add equal measures of jazz and pop, season the mix with a touch of Cajun spice and a dash of Bluegrass, and lace the whole concoction with a wee dram of the Celtic. 'Frankly, neither of us could survive on a diet of any one particular musical recipe so we just call our tunes 'Northwest Originals!'' -Dr. Biscotti.- Shop: odax

Culmination
'Culmination', the title track for this 2010 internet release, is scored for his world-jazz group 'Hybrid Project', consisting of acoustic guitar, ney, alto sax, trumpet, cello, bass and drums. The composition, originally written for chamber orchestra and jazz rhythm section, won an award for jazz composition from the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, D.C. Notes from Francesco Martinelli: fmartinelli@tin.it Istanbul is still a city of wonders. Behind the great metropolis with his fumes and traffic jams, it's noble profile defaced by urbanistic crimes and it's unique memories apparently under attack from all sides, there's still a spirit fueled by the traditions that met - and fought - there over the centuries. There's unmistakably a buzz in today's Istanbul, a vibe generated by young generations eager to be open to the outside world, and often brought to reconsider their country's recent and ancient history. Artists are stimulated by the atmosphere, and among a group of musicians currently tapping the energy of the Bosphorous town is guitar player and composer Donovan Mixon. Tall and athletic, Donovan could be an ex-basketball player, and his serious face is ready to open in a sweet smile - his students say he's pretty good at frowning too, but I haven't experienced that. What I know is that of the American jazz musicians that I've met, and they are a fair number, Donovan is among the most receptive to European culture. He lived in Italy for many years, we had in Istanbul pleasant conversations in Italian, and his attitude is not a "transatlantic" one anymore. Don is thoroughly schooled in jazz and contemporary music, but in view of subsequent developments, his early connection with guitarist Dennis Sandole is especially intriguing. "Modern Music from Philadelphia" by the Sandole brothers, of Italian descent, was a landmark of the 50's "new music" and contained compositions like "The boys from Istanbul"! After extensive studies, Donovan played professionally on the road for several years, and his activity as a teacher reflects a practical approach to the needs of a working musician. He recorded with the likes of Lee Konitz, George Garzone and Eddie Henderson, and distilled his experiences into a personal style of relaxed elegance, where notes are carefully placed in a uncluttered, transparent texture. With this CD a distinctly Turkish element enters in his music, not in a heavy concoction of "typical" sounds: the rich tradition of colors and sounds in Turkish music yields some selected ingredients - the unique tone of 'ney' (a Turkish wooden flute), some special scales and rhythms - but the agenda is not dictated by anything external to Donovan's idea of music. "Summer Of 78" slowly grows from acoustic guitar to a "chamber" sound before introducing the sound of Ercan Irmak's ney. Ercan is one of the most important and in demand players of this instrument, central to the mystical and classical tradition, he guested on this track because he especially liked the composition. His improvisation combines traditional technique with the modern feeling of the theme, and the breathy sound of the ney integrates smoothly with the ensemble in a sequence of variations and permutations. The trumpet countermelodies at the end theme played by Senova Ulker, a guest and respected soloist both in classical and jazz circles in Istanbul, seem to be improvised but they are in fact written parts. On the wistful "The Dance Of Life", Senova Ulker carries the theme with authority before entertaining an improvised dialogue with the guitar. Aptly entitled, this composition possesses a highly capricious quality perhaps due to the asymmetric construction of the main theme, harmonic rhythm and phrases. Performed with an exquisite 3/4 swing by the ensemble. "Culmination" - awarded a jazz composition prize by the National Endowment for the Arts - is Donovan's take on the never-ending fascination of jazz players with the contrapunct of Baroque music, in a dramatic growing complexity of voicings, sharp tempo changes, fast, articulated lines and a question at the end, it's most aptly the centerpiece of the CD. 'We Are Yo' Kids" - a special kind of nursery song, has a definite Latin feel: listen to the drums on this one. Ferit Odman, like Billy Higgins, is a smiling drummer, but he's listening too. This bright young man, whom I had the pleasure to have as a student in my classes, is putting under his belt an extraordinary amount of serious work, having fun while learning all the time from different sources. His light, airy swing carefully follows the indications of the composer without losing relaxation. "He let's loose in the duet with fellow percussionist Engin Gurkey, while Serhan Erkol provides rhythmic drive with his bari riffs." "Mist" is not an impressionistic piece, in fact it's the closest Donovan gets on this CD to contemporary music with a dramatic exploration of dynamics and dissonance at once. 'Mercury' opens and prominently features Jeff McAuley, an American cello player with a taste for adventure in music and life. Jeff is a classical musician, but we don't hold this against him, since he's getting more and more intrigued by the idea of improvisation. Mixon's concept of music, with his emphasis on light but well-connected structures establishing a dialectic with improvisation is the perfect point of entry for Jeff's cello, with it's careful intonation and melodic phrasing. The atmospheric, suspended prelude of "Eddi & Daniela"features Ayça Ergin on ney: a girl, quite a startling sight on a predominantly male instrument, who studied with the most important masters before starting her own career. Her performance is largely responsible for the feel of this piece that eventually concludes with a trio with the guitar and cello. "Quando Il Lupo Annusa i Fiori" - a humorous title, "When the wolf smells the flowers" in Italian - features in the intro Caner Kaptan on bass: another musician in his 20's who shows great promise. The rich tone of Ulker's trumpet can be fully appreciated in the development of the piece, at times almost alone in the acoustic space: Donovan then gets to play his electric guitar, and his proportioned, sometimes blues-tinged solo is a model of restrained intensity built through crisp, full-attacked tones, generating an equally inspired repartee by Senova. Fading in already in full swing, "Rough Translation" is the most overtly Oriental theme, limited to a quick impression of Donovan and his band passing by in their quest, giving an appointment for some further stage of the travel - this listener only hopes the next installment will come soon. Millions
The Weapons Factory stems from the brainchild of Nick Welch, and the result of a year of intense work creating a solid bed of Electro Ambient D+B mixes as a 15 year old Computer Game and DJ mix fanatic. The mixes were created as one of Nick's bedroom studio hobbies, with the intent to produce just a limited edition for friends and to sell to a few local boutiques and specialised gift stores to cover costs. An opportunity to move to California near silicon valley and the world of computer game development put a hold on any further energies being directed to the music projects., so the CD's and mixes ended up among his Dad's CD archives. Some years later, his father, a musician and producer, revisited the old mixes, and enthused by the sounds and possibilities, brought them to IMMG's studio to explore development and re-mastering. Experimental melodic layers were added, and so began a years work of additional vocals and instrumentation. As the layers and contributing artists grew, so did the excitement around the results. By the time the fourth track was finished, it was obvious that something exciting and releasable was in creation. By the end of the year, the debut 'Weapons Factory' album 'Millions' was complete, and a further selection of tracks laid down for the follow up of WF2. REVIEW: Artist: The Weapons Factory Album: Millions Review by Matthew Forss The electronic wizardry of ambient drum 'n' bass composer and DJ fanatic, Nick Welch, is refreshingly hip and cool with all the fixings for a delicious dance session. The music is largely composed of jazzy, ambient-centered tracks with some dub, trance, and new age elements, too. Nick is joined by sax player, arranger, and vocalist Robin Welch, along with producer, guitarist, and songwriter John Perkins. The performance repertoire is diverse with many musical layers of sound that reach far into the outer reaches of space and time. "Love Don't Live Here" begins with a light percussive sound of drum set swooshes, synth washes, and a single exhaling human voice before the music moves into a scattered break-beat pattern with the addition of a few sax notes. The beat speeds up as a female voice sings a few melismatic vocals, as another voice provides spoken word accompaniment. The break-beat, drum 'n' bass sound is definitely indicative of the music from other groups, including Lamb, Maxinquaye, or Massive Attack. The fast beat sound cuts in and out with room for the spoken word accompaniment, intermittent sax, and vocal melisma. The cascading sounds of the bass-like melody, dub sounds, synth washes, and selected vocals provide a good listening experience with room to dance, daydream, or drift away to a far-off land. "Forsaken" is a song with a gritty opening of equally-measured sounds that slowly speed up into a dance-laden concoction of mixed, male scat vocals. The song takes on an Eastern flair with a bit of bluesy/Western guitar work that would be a perfect addition to HBO's True Blood soundtrack. The haunting vocals are reminiscent of a monastic choir at times, with the guitar work bordering on anything by Chris Isaak, and the dance beats of any trance group. Despite the multi-faceted depiction, the music seems to work together without reverting to anything melancholic. "Desert Dolphins" opens with a few electronic sounds, light percussive swooshes, and a sax intro before the dub 'n' bass leads the song into various directions of electronic blurbs, watery gurgles, and ambient soundscapes. The melodies merge into a heavy, dance track with electronic blurbs, sax accompaniment, and ambient washes. Though, the sax seems to be a pervasive theme throughout the song, and album, it may not be particularly necessary for a majority of the songs. This is mostly due to the electronic, ambient, dance track structure that does not necessarily need sax accompaniment. However, the sax does provide a dub 'n' bass, drum 'n' bass, and jazzy-trance ambiance that smoothes or cools the fiery dance tracks. "New Age Suite" opens with singing birds, water sounds, and synth washes, before a break-beat rhythm dives right into a heavy, dance medley with occasional ambient washes. The sax appears throughout, as muffled and staticky voices break-up the instrumental continuity. Different and clearer scat vocals are repeated a bit near the middle of the song. The electronic blurbs, ambient washes, dance beat, haunting, but indeterminate voices, and the jazzy elements seems to be something that would emanate from a 'New Age' suite. "Millions" begins with an earthy, ambient intro, light sax solo, and a frenzied break-beat rhythm. The slower, jazz elements and fast break-beat rhythm are complete opposites, but work well due to their instrumental polarization. The sax and ambient washes break-up the fast pace, though the rhythm slows half-way through the song, as a mix of radio or television interference and electronic voices take over. Nick Welch is a talented and diverse musician with a clear vision for his music. The incorporation of jazzy elements and electronic music seemed to be divergent, though the musical relationships to jazz and dance music are closer than other forms of music. Millions is an album with danceable tracks and some of the lighter, ambient fare. The scat vocals and mostly unintelligible vocals added a level of mystery to the music. At times, the sax did not seem to be a necessary addition to the songs, but it was not used too pervasively to warrant any major qualms. All in all, the album featured seven songs running around forty-five minutes. The musical arsenal of The Weapons Factory is an exciting contribution to the world of break-beat, trance, dub 'n' bass, and drum 'n' bass.
