Emmanuel Levinas

Emmanuel Lévinas (1906 - 1995) zählt zu den bedeutendsten Denkern des 20. Jahrhunderts. Als Sohn jüdischer Eltern in Kaunas (Litauen) geboren, studierte er in den 20er Jahren Philosophie zunächst in Straßburg, später bei Edmund Husserl und Martin Heidegger in Freiburg. Seine innovative und radikale Weiterentwicklung der Phänomenologie Husserls und der Daseinsanalyse Heideggers, insbesondere seine Überlegungen zum Umgang mit dem Anderen, haben ihn vor allem in Deutschland und Frankreich zu einem der wichtigsten und einflußreichsten Philosophen der letzten Jahrzehnte werden lassen. In dieser ersten auf deutsch erschienenen Biographie erzählt Salomon Malka von den zentralen Stationen und wichtigen Begegnungen im Leben Emmanuel Lévinas'. Aus einer von jüdischen Traditionen geprägten Welt in Litauen findet Lévinas seinen Weg zum Studium nach Frankreich. Zu Beginn der 30er Jahre zunächst als Ausbilder für jüdische Lehrer tätig, wird er zum Kriegsdienst verpflichtet und gerät 1940 in Kriegsgefangenschaft. Bis Kriegsende verbleibt er in einem Speziallager für jüdische Kriegsgefangene in der Lüneburger Heide. Als er erfährt, daß unter den Opfern des Holocaust auch seine Eltern, seine Geschwister und weitere Familienangehörige sind, beschließt er, nie wieder deutschen Boden zu betreten. Die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Grauen der Vernichtung der europäischen Juden wird fortan zu einem zentralen Angelpunkt seiner Philosophie.Salomon Malka gewährt zudem sehr persönliche Einblicke in den Alltag des Philosophen - er zeigt sein Temperament, seinen Humor, seine Überzeugungen und schildert eindrücklich Lévinas' Begegnungen mit so unterschiedlichen Persönlichkeiten wie Martin Heidegger, Paul Ricoeur, Johannes Paul II, Jacques Derrida oder Maurice Blanchot.
