'What Ned hasn't seen on a sports TV channel isn't worth knowing about.'Gabby Logan'From falling out with Mourinho to flying with Gerrard, this is a wonderful journey through football.'Henry Winter'A great read by one of sport's good guys.'Jonathan Liew'A beautiful love letter to a love no longer felt.'Adrian ChilesSquare Peg, Round Ball is a candid, insightful reminiscence on a life in football. From time to time, as I lurched from training ground to player's tunnel, I'd be glared at by Alex Ferguson, clapped on the back by Arsène Wenger, taken out the back by Alan Pardew or banned by José Mourinho. In the time it took for the Golden Generation to come of age, dominate, disappoint and retire, I fell in - and ultimately out - of love with the game, as I was granted a uniquely privileged insight into the backstage comings and goings of the professional football circus.Although best known as ITV's commentator on the Tour de France, Ned Boulting has spent most of his professional life covering football.Follow Ned's journey from football supporter to reporter - from criss-crossing the country in a banger of a car hoping for a word or two from the latest big signing, to the glamour of the Champions League. Essential reading for every golfer from the sport's most acclaimed course developer-a comprehensive, firsthand account of restoring the inherent satisfactions of this centuries-old game, from the beauty of natural courses to the joys of walking the course "Mike Keiser is the best thing to happen to golf since the Big Bertha. He's the guy who single-handedly saved us from the Fake 100-foot Waterfall Era. He gave us back nature, walking and buddy trips. This is a fascinating read on how in the world he did it."-Rick Reilly, golf writer An avid golfer with a demanding career in the greeting card business, Mike Keiser found a new calling on the authentic links courses of Scotland and Ireland. Seized by the beauty of the landscape and the holes running through it, he determined this was how golf was meant to be: inclusive, not private; played on foot, not riding a cart; the courses natural, neither lavish nor contrived. Vowing to transplant this experience to the States, Keiser entered the golf business and, ignoring the advice of experts, built a true links course in Oregon. Bandon Dunes has redefined the game here and become a destination for golfers everywhere. Those same convictions have now produced other top-ranked courses by Keiser-in Wisconsin, Nova Scotia, Tasmania, and elsewhere-whose magical allure demonstrates what the world's most gifted golf course architects can accomplish by working on designs that hew to the natural landscape. Keiser's further commitments-to the caddies, greens crews, and staff at his resorts; to the communities in which they're located; and to deep environmental stewardship-enhance the singular appeal of these immensely popular courses. At once an account of inventing a new, life-changing business, a guide to historic course design, and a paean to the sport that has recently experienced a surge of growth, The Nature of the Game is essential reading for every golfer.

The most unlikely Hall of Famer Dave Bancroft should not be in the Baseball Hall of Fame. He emerged from his Iowa hometown as an undersized shortstop without batting skills. Signed by one of the 300-plus minor league teams at age 17 in 1909, he lasted only three weeks before being cut, then joined another team and was released again. His rise to become enshrined in Cooperstown as one of baseball's all-time greats was unfathomable. More importantly, baseball placed Bancroft at the game's best vantage point across nearly one century. This view allowed him to observe the modern evolution of the game through international travel, the fallout of two world wars, racism, women's rights and the Great Depression. He met practically every renowned person connected to pro baseball . . . and countless others with astounding backgrounds and fates. He greeted royalty and presidents, film stars and music sensations, boxing champs and snake oil chumps, needy kids and spoiled moguls. Along the way, Bancroft:--Changed how shortstop was played--Became a groundbreaking switch hitter--Earned the flattering but bizarre nickname "Beauty"--Delivered the most precise support of the designated hitter 50 years before it happened--Played in a 51-minute, 9-inning game--Managed three women's professional baseball league teams--Suffered one the sport's most vicious attacks from another player during a game--Appeared on what may have been baseball's first TV broadcast--Played every inning in four World Series, including three extraordinary matchups between the New York Giants and New York Yankees in the early 1920s--Attended several of the earliest night-game experiments--Holds the longest-standing season record for fielding chances by a shortstop--Remains the only player to hit six singles in a nine-inning game and score in four straight innings. Bancroft thrived as a major New York sports hero and languished on dangerous bus rides as manager of the minor league St. Cloud Rox. With his health failing on January 31, 1971, he ate a chicken dinner with his devoted wife, Edna, of 60 years when the phone rang at their modest northern Wisconsin home. Dave listened and spoke softly. "Oh, my God," he told the caller, "that's the nicest thing I've ever heard." He made the Hall of Fame.
