Dead Girls: Essays on Surviving an American Obsession , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 502min
Named a most anticipated book of 2018 by Bitch Magazine. In this poignant collection, Alice Bolin examines iconic American works from the essays of Joan Didion and James Baldwin to Twin Peaks, Britney Spears, and Serial, illuminating the widespread obsession with women who are abused, killed, and disenfranchised, and whose bodies (dead and alive) are used as props to bolster men’s stories. Smart and accessible, thoughtful and heartfelt, Bolin investigates the implications of our cultural fixations, and her own role as a consumer and creator. Bolin chronicles her life in Los Angeles, dissects the Noir, revisits her own coming of age, and analyzes stories of witches and werewolves, both appreciating and challenging the narratives we construct and absorb every day. Dead Girls begins by exploring the trope of dead women in fiction, and ends by interrogating the more complex dilemma of living women - both the persistent injustices they suffer and the oppression that white women help perpetrate. Reminiscent of the piercing insight of Rebecca Solnit and the critical skill of Hilton Als, Bolin constructs a sharp, perceptive, and revelatory dialogue on the portrayal of women in media and their roles in our culture. ungekürzt. Muse
Meet the unexpected, overlooked and forgotten models of art history. Who was Picasso's 'Weeping Woman'? Why was Grace Jones covered in graffiti? How did Francis Bacon meet the burglar who became his muse? The perception of the muse is that of a passive, powerless model, at the mercy of an influential and older artist. But is this trope a romanticised myth? Far from posing silently, muses have brought emotional support, intellectual energy, career-changing creativity and practical help to artists. Muse tells the true stories of the incredible muses who have inspired art history's masterpieces. From Leonardo da Vinci's studio to the covers of Vogue, art historian, critic and writer Ruth Millington uncovers the remarkable role of muses in some of art history's most well-known and significant works. Delving into the real-life relationships that models have held with the artists who immortalised them, it will expose the influential and active part they have played and deconstruct reductive stereotypes, reframing the muse as a momentous and empowered agent of art history.- Shop: buecher

The Cold Summer , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 524min
The summer of 1992 had been exceptionally cold in southern Italy. But that's not the reason why it is still remembered. On May 23, 1992, a roadside explosion killed the Palermo judge Giovanni Falcone, his wife and three police officers. A few weeks later judge Paolo Borsellino and five police officers were killed in the center of Palermo. These anti-mafia judges became heroes but the violence spread to the region of Bari in Puglia, where we meet a new, memorable character, Maresciallo Pietro Fenoglio, an officer of the Italian Carabinieri. Fenoglio, recently abandoned by his wife, must simultaneously deal with his personal crisis and the new gang wars raging around Bari. The police are stymied until a gang member, accused of killing a child, decides to collaborate, revealing the inner workings and the rules governing organised crime in the area. The story is narrated through the actual testimony of the informant, a trope reminiscent of verbatim theatre which Carofiglio, an ex-anti-mafia judge himself, uses to great effect. The gangs are stopped but the mystery of the boy's murder must still be solved, leading Fenoglio into a world of deep moral ambiguity, where the prosecutors are hard to distinguish from the prosecuted. ungekürzt. Unreliable: A Novel , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 775min
Riotous and riveting, this is the story of a charming college professor who most definitely did not - but maybe did - kill his ex-wife. Or someone else. Or no one. Irby plays with the thriller trope in unimaginably clever ways. Edwin Stith, a failed novelist and college writing instructor in upstate New York, is returning home for the weekend to Richmond, Virginia, to celebrate his mother's wedding - to a much younger man. Edwin has a peculiar relationship with the truth. He is a liar who is brutally honest. He may or may not be sleeping with his students, he may or may not be getting fired, and he may or may not have killed his ex-wife, a lover, and his brand-new stepsister. Stith's dysfunctional homecoming leads him deep into a morass of long-gestating secrets and dangers, of old flames still burning strong and new passions ready to consume everything he holds dear. But family dysfunction is eclipsed only by Edwin's own, leading to profound suspense and utter hilarity. Lee Irby has crafted a sizzling modern classic of dark urges, lies, and secrets that harks back to the unsettling obsessions of Edgar Allan Poe - with a masterful ending that will have you thinking for days. ungekürzt. Surprise Baby for Christmas: A Secret Baby Romance , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 277min
Baby, it's cold out. Nine months ago, I hooked up with the funniest, hottest, most amazing woman. It was supposed to be a vacation fling. She'd broken up with her ex.I don't do commitment.I was totally cool with "what happens in the skiing lodge, stays in the skiing lodge."And damn, did a lot happen. All over the place. In all kinds of positions.Over and over again.I was stupid to agree to her rules.Stupid to let her go.Then I see her walking down the fairy-lit street, a couple of weeks before Christmas. Our eyes meet and the chemistry is still hot enough to melt snow. She's even more gorgeous than I remember. She's radiant.I've got a bulge bigger than Santa's package, and all I want for Christmas this year...Is her.I'm not letting her go again. So what if she doesn't believe in love?So what if I've never "done" commitment. One look into those big blue eyes and I know she wants me too. We end up in the ER on Christmas Eve along with a few dozen drunks. But I'm sober as a judge when the doctor tells me, "She's in labor."***This twist on the Secret Baby trope is an emotionally sweet, occasionally steamy debut novel with no cliffhangers, no cheating, and a guaranteed happily-ever-after. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed writing it!*** ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Logan Anare. The Story of French New Orleans: History of a Creole City , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 544min
What is it about the city of New Orleans? History, location, and culture continue to link it to France while distancing it culturally and symbolically from the US. This audiobook explores the traces of French language, history, and artistic expression that have been present there over the last 300 years. This volume focuses on the French, Spanish, and American colonial periods to understand the imprint that French sociocultural dynamic left on the Crescent City. The migration of Acadians to New Orleans at the time the city became a Spanish dominion and the arrival of Haitian refugees when the city became an American territory oddly reinforced its Francophone identity. However, in the process of establishing itself as an urban space in the Antebellum South, the culture of New Orleans became a liability for New Orleans elite after the Louisiana Purchase.New Orleans and the Caribbean share numerous historical, cultural, and linguistic connections. The audiobook analyzes these connections and the shared process of Creolization occurring in New Orleans and throughout the Caribbean Basin. It suggests "French" New Orleans might be understood as a trope for unscripted "original" Creole social and cultural elements. Since being Creole came to connote African descent, the study suggests an association with France in the minds of whites allowed for a less racially bound and contested social order within the US. ungekürzt. Tales from Du Bois (eBook, ePUB)
Tales from Du Bois brings together critical race theory, queer studies, philosophy, and genre theory to offer an illuminating new comprehensive study of W. E. B. Du Bois's fiction from 1903-1928. Erika Renée Williams begins by revisiting Du Bois's tale of being rebuffed by a white female classmate in The Souls of Black Folk, identifying it as a failure of what she calls "cross-caste romance"-a sentimental, conjugal, or erotic relation projected across lines of cultural difference. In Du Bois's text, this failure figures as the cause of double consciousness, the experience of looking at oneself through the eyes of others. Far from being unique to Souls, the trope of cross-caste romance, Williams argues, structures much of Du Bois's literary oeuvre. With it, Du Bois queries romance's capacity to ground nationalism, on the one hand, and to foment queer forms of Afro-Diasporic reclamation and kinship, on the other. Beautifully written and deftly argued, Tales from Du Bois analyzes familiar works like Souls and Dark Princess alongside neglected short fiction to make a case for the value of Du Bois's literary writing and its centrality to his thought more broadly.- Shop: buecher

Drilled: Blue Collar Bad Boys, Book 3 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 150min
Four years ago, my buddy's dying words to me were to watch out for his little sister. I did what he asked from afar, and when she graduated and got a job teaching kindergarten, I asked her to "housesit" for me since I'm hardly ever home when I'm working on the oil rig. But now I'm injured and have to recuperate at home, and my extra-curvy housesitter is anything but safe from me.She's the homebody type. She'll make some man an excellent wife someday, be a good mother. She likes taking care of people. It would be wrong AF to take her the way I want to, but it would feel so right. When she comes to me for advice about how to get a boyfriend and how to keep him, I'm done playing her silent guardian. I'll teach her everything she needs to know about pleasing a man - me.She says all she's ever really wanted to do was be a mama. And now I can't stop thinking of putting my baby in her belly.Author's Confession: This story is trope soup and I loved every minute of writing it. Don't believe me? Older man/younger woman. First time. Roommates. Older brother's best friend. BBW heroine. Alpha real man hero. Guardian/ward. Breeding romance. Insta-lust. Heck, if I'd have given one of them amnesia, we'd have a serious drinking game! ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Candace Childs.
