Robert L. Humphrey was an Iwo Jima veteran, a Harvard graduate, and a cross-cultural conflict resolution specialist during the Cold War. He proposed the dual life value theory of human nature. From the experiences of childhood in the Great Depression, trips as a teenager in the Panamanian Merchant Marines, national-class boxing, the awe-inspiring sights of selfless sacrifice on Iwo Jima, and finally 15 years in overseas ideological warfare, Humphrey observed that universal values exist and ultimately control human behavior. Humphrey is a graduate of Wisconsin University, Harvard Law School, and the Fletcher School of Diplomacy. At the beginning of the Cold War, he left a teaching position at MIT to help lead the struggle against Communism. Finding that US education was contributing to rather than reducing American overseas problems, he developed a new leadership approach that overcame "ugly American" syndrome among hundreds of thousands in crucial third world areas. More recently his methodology won commendations for educating the alleged uneducable: Mexican American street-gang youths in Southern California and Canadian native teenage dropouts. Until Communism's fall, Humphrey kept his new methods confidential. Those methods are significant: (1) From his experiences with young infantrymen in heavy combat and with the peasants in many villages of the world, he perceived humankind's basic goodness that philosophers have missed or underrated. (2) In place of compartmentalized, primarily mental education, Humphrey has developed a human-nature-guided (moral, physical, artistic, mental) approach. ungekürzt. Language: English. Ooh, ah, Ray Parlour! Nicknamed the Romford Pele for his solid but unglamorous image, Ray Parlour is one of the most well-loved Arsenal players of the last few decades. A loyal club servant for over 14 years (1992-2007), he is revered among the Arsenal faithful for his down-to-earth Essex charm, his mischievous sense of humour and his hardworking performances on the pitch. Often in the shadows of his flashier teammates, he didn't have the flair of a Pires or an Henry, but he worked tirelessly to become an integral part of many of George Graham's and Arsene Wenger's greatest sides, including the Invincibles of 2004. In this wonderfully funny and candid autobiography, full of side-splitting stories, Parlour looks back fondly on his life and career. From the all-day drinking sessions and banter of the Tony Adams years to the antics he got up to with his more cultured continental teammates, teaching Thierry Henry cockney rhyming slang and Dennis Bergkamp how to play golf, this is a portrait of a man who was as loved as much for his personality as for his often underrated talent. From his days as a schoolboy working on market stalls to playing alongside the world's finest players in the Champions League, it is also the rags-to-riches story of a career that spanned enormous change in British football, the likes of which may not be seen again. ungekürzt. If people knew how hard I had to work to gain my mastery, it would not seem so wonderful at all. (Michelangelo) A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? When historians are asked to pick a point in history when Western civilization was transformed and guided down the path to modernity, most of them point to the Renaissance. Indeed the Renaissance revolutionized art, philosophy, religion, sciences, and math, with individuals like Galileo, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, Dante, and Petrarch bridging the past and modern society. In Charles River Editors' Legends of the Renaissance, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of the most important men and women of the Renaissance in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known. It's possible that Michelangelo is the most famous artist in history, but it's also possible that he's an underrated artist. The vast influence of his career is reflected by the fact that he is not only known for his own art but has also come to embody an entire epoch of Western art. Along with Leonardo da Vinci, there are no other artists who so fully capture the spirit of scientific and artistic discovery that characterized art during the late 15th and early 16th centuries. ungekürzt. Dean Acheson was one of the most influential Secretaries of State in U.S. history, presiding over American foreign policy during a pivotal era - the decade after World War II when the American Century slipped into high gear. During his vastly influential career, Acheson spearheaded the greatest foreign policy achievements in modern times, ranging from the Marshall Plan to the establishment of NATO. In this acclaimed biography, Robert L. Beisner paints an indelible portrait of one of the key figures of the last half-century. In a book filled with insight based on research in government archives, memoirs, letters, and diaries, Beisner illuminates Acheson's major triumphs, including the highly underrated achievement of converting West Germany and Japan from mortal enemies to prized allies, and does not shy away from examining his missteps. But underlying all his actions, Beisner shows, was a tough-minded determination to outmatch the strength of the Soviet bloc - indeed, to defeat the Soviet Union at every turn. The book also sheds light on Acheson's friendship with Truman - one, a bourbon-drinking Midwesterner with a homespun disposition, the other, a mustachioed Connecticut dandy who preferred perfect martinis. Over six foot tall, with steel blue, "merry, searching eyes" and a "wolfish" grin, Dean Acheson was an unforgettable character - intellectually brilliant, always debonair, and tough as tempered steel. This lustrous portrait of an immensely accomplished and colorful life is the epitome of the biographer's art. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Ben Bartolone. Los Angeles and Lucifer are a lot alike. They both seduce and lure with promises of wealth, fame, beauty, or love. But those promises are often empty; and even when they’re not, there’s a price to pay. Come meet the denizens of City of Devils: Natasha is an underrated actress who goes to great lengths to win an Oscar in “Based on a true story.” In “Doom for Rent” a young man takes on a roommate to make ends meet, only to find he’s opened the door to pure evil. Geneva Hughes is a wealthy celebutant who loves her chihuahua, Boo-Boo, to death in “Ankle Biters.” Private dick Max Ryker gets more than he bargained for in “The Case of the Butchered Bombshell”. Tourist Ethel learns there’s no such thing as “Free Admission”. Child actor Cosmo Colombo finds out what he’s made of when The Big One hits LA in “Richter Mortis”. Are the paparazzi soulless? Find out in “Remote Trigger”. A narcissist devours the weak in “Depraved Indifference” while the meek fight back against a sleazy film producer in “He Was Asking for It”. Partygoers in “Abracadaver” practice supernatural sleight-of-hand during a séance at The Magic Castle. A psychic shyster gets his comeuppance in “My Mother the Carcass” while Malibu surfer Bjorn meets a malicious mermaid in “Tasty Waves”. Lastly, a lonely lady’s desperation to be thin and beautiful could cost her her life in “Alice on Wonderland”. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Graydon Schlichter. The art and science of talent search: how to spot, assess, woo, and retain highly talented people. How do you find talent with a creative spark? To what extent can you predict human creativity, or is human creativity something irreducible before our eyes, perhaps to be spotted or glimpsed by intuition, but unique each time it appears? Obsessed with these questions, renowned economist Tyler Cowen and venture capitalist and entrepreneur Daniel Gross set out to study the art and science of finding talent at the highest level: the people with the creativity, drive, and insight to transform an organization and make everyone around them better. Cowen and Gross guide the reader through the major scientific research areas relevant for talent search, including how to conduct an interview, how much to weight intelligence, how to judge personality and match personality traits to jobs, how to evaluate talent in online interactions such as Zoom calls, why talented women are still undervalued and how to spot them, how to understand the special talents in people who have disabilities or supposed disabilities, and how to use delegated scouts to find talent. Talent appreciation is an art, but it is an art you can improve through study and experience. Identifying underrated, brilliant individuals is one of the simplest ways to give yourself an organizational edge, and this is the book that will show you how to do that. Talent is both for people searching for talent and for those who wish to be searched for, found, and discovered.

Victorious! is an audiobook of encouragement and triumph for anyone that has ever been bullied or has had to deal with a challenging life event. If you have been victimized, undermined, underrated, or devalued by people in positions of authority or who were bigger and stronger than you, this audiobook is for you. First and foremost, you are not weaker or inferior to anyone. God is no respecter of persons. Which means he will defend you and anyone else that calls on Him. Whether you know Him personally now or not. Once you realize that God has always been there for you, you will never feel powerless again. Victorious! focuses on bullies found in the bible who tried to oppress, silence, victimize, harass, and destroy ordinary people. What these bullies didn't know was that these people always cried out to God in some way. And that is why these bullies were trampled and removed in every single case. God delivered ordinary people from bully bosses, family bullies, tyrants, oppressors, bully co-workers, school yard bullies, and mean girls. Each and every bully thought that they were more powerful, smarter, or better than everyone else. They felt a false sense of entitlement and that no one could bring them down. Well, each one of them met their match when God showed up and showed out! See how God handled them and be inspired...Because He will do the same for you! You too will be a giant and bully slayer after listening to Victorious! ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Tom Taverna. Chefs, Drugs and Rock & Roll transports listeners back in time to witness the remarkable evolution of the American restaurant chef in the 1970s and 1980s. Andrew Friedman goes inside Chez Panisse and other Bay Area restaurants to show how the politically charged backdrop of Berkeley helped spark this new profession; into the historically underrated community of Los Angeles chefs, including a young Wolfgang Puck; and into the clash of cultures between established French chefs in New York City and the American game changers behind the Quilted Giraffe, River Café, and other storied establishments. Along the way, the chefs, their struggles, their cliques, and, of course, their restaurants are brought to life in vivid, memorable detail. As the '80s unspool, we watch the profession evolve as American masters like Thomas Keller rise, and watch the genesis of a "chef nation" as chefs start crisscrossing the country for work and special events and legendary hangouts like Blue Ribbon become social focal points, all as the industry-altering Food Network shimmers on the horizon. A (mostly) oral history told primarily in the words of the people who lived it - from writers like Ruth Reichl to chefs like Jeremiah Tower and Jonathan Waxman - Chefs, Drugs and Rock & Roll treats listeners to an unparalleled 360-degree re-creation of the industry and the times through the perspectives not only of the pioneering chefs but also of line cooks, front-of-house personnel, investors, and critics who had front-row seats to this extraordinary transformation. ungekürzt.
