The Trouble to Check Her: The Queen of Rosings Park, Book 2 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 620min
Lydia's last chance. Will she improve when someone takes the trouble to check her?Running off with Mr. Wickham was a great joke - until everything turned arsey-varsey. That spoilsport Mr. Darcy caught them and packed Lydia off to a hideous boarding school for girls who had lost their virtue. It would improve her character, he said. Ridiculous, she said.Mrs. Drummond, the school’s headmistress, has shocking expectations for the girls. They must share rooms, do chores, attend lessons, and engage in charitable work, no matter how well born they might be. She even forces them to wear mobcaps! Refusal could lead to finding themselves at the receiving end of Mrs. Drummond's cane - if they were lucky. The unlucky ones could be dismissed and found a position...as a menial servant.Everything and everyone at the school is uniformly horrid. Lydia hates them all, except possibly the music master, Mr. Amberson, who seems to have the oddest ideas about her. He might just understand her better than she understands herself. Can she find a way to live up to his strange expectations, or will she spend the rest of her life as a scullery maid? ungekürzt. Using Declarative Mapping Sentences in Psychological Research (eBook, ePUB)
Using facet theory and Hackett's pioneering development of the declarative mapping sentence (DMS) as a qualitative methodology, this volume explains the process of formulating and applying the DMS to critically assess female representation in science fiction. Using a comparative approach to the development of female roles in Western science fiction films and television, the authors illustrate how the DMS is formulated and used to analyse the psychological and behavioral profiles of female characters. By maintaining the common structure of the DMS across films while adapting its content for each female role, the text demonstrates the flexibility of the DMS in providing a structure for varied research domains, enabling results to be uniformly compared, contrasted and classified. This insightful and thought-provoking volume will appeal to researchers, academics and educators interested in psychological methods and statistics, qualitative research in gender identity, and research methods more generally. Those especially interested in behavioural psychology, gender and cinema, and science fiction will also benefit from this volume.- Shop: buecher

Surviving Solitary (eBook, ePUB)
Twenty to forty percent of the US prison population will spend time in restricted housing units-or solitary confinement. These separate units within prisons have enhanced security measures, and thousands of staff control and monitor the residents. Though commonly assumed to be punishment for only the most dangerous behaviors, in reality, these units may also be used in response to minor infractions. In Surviving Solitary, Danielle S. Rudes offers an unprecedented look inside RHUs-and a resounding call to more vigorously confront the intentions and realities of these structures. As the narratives unfold we witness the slow and systematic damage the RHUs inflict upon those living and working inside, through increased risk, arbitrary rules, and strained or absent social interactions. Rudes makes the case that we must prioritize improvement over harm. Residents uniformly call for more humane and dignified treatment. Staff yearn for more expansive control. But, as Rudes shows, there also remains fierce resilience among residents and staff and across the communities they forge-and a perpetual hope that they may have a different future.- Shop: buecher

Summary, Analysis, and Review of Margot Lee Shetterly's Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 31min
Please note: This is an analysis and key takeaways of the book and not the original book. Start Publishing Notes' Summary, Analysis, and Review of Margot Lee Shetterly's Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race includes a summary of the book, review, analysis and key takeaways, and a detailed "about the author" section. Preview: Hidden Figures begins with a prologue recounting author Margot Lee Shetterly's childhood in Hampton, Virginia. Her father worked for National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Langley Research Center, and Shetterly was surrounded by an upwardly mobile black community. Given her father's job as a climate scientist and the similarly successful lives of her extended family, Shetterly experienced a comfortable middle-class upbringing removed from the palpable pain and strife that has engulfed so many other black communities in America. As she writes, Shetterly "knew so many African Americans working in science, math, and engineering that I thought that's just what black folks did." As Shetterly grew up and left Hampton, she became fascinated by the people she had grown up with and the individuals her father had once mentioned in passing. The popular conception of NASA was that of an organization staffed almost uniformly by white men; so who were the people that Shetterly's father had worked with, and where were they now? ungekürzt. British Legends: The Life and Legacy of Charlie Chaplin , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 103min
Only a select few actors become international stars in their time, but none had as unique a career as Charlie Chaplin. Chaplin was the first true film star, and he managed to do so even when films were still silent. He has been honored with too many awards to count, and the fact that his name remains instantly recognizable nearly a century after his first film is a testament to his influence. Even today, Chaplin's films are arguably more recognizable than those of perhaps any other actor or director; everyone is familiar with the famous "Tramp" costume and persona, and even the casual film enthusiast has likely seen films such as City Lights (1931) and Modern Times (1936). Chaplin is known for the singular blend of pathos and humor evinced by his films, and it is not uncommon for audiences to laugh and cry at alternate points of a Chaplin film, a trait that continues to endear audiences even to this day. For this reason, in his review of Stephen Weissman's biography of Chaplin, Martin Sieff noted, "It is doubtful any individual has every given more entertainment, pleasure, and relief to so many human beings when they needed it most." As Sieff's comment suggests, Chaplin's career coincided with the two World Wars and the Great Depression, but while Chaplin the actor was popular, Chaplin the person became controversial in the final decades of his life. In fact, there is a wide discrepancy between the almost uniformly enthusiastic praise of Chaplin today and the subversive identity he cultivated toward the latter part of his career. ungekürzt. 7 Checklist Items for Success: A Guide to a Richer and More Successful Life , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 318min
“A US Navy physician shares his secrets for a more successful life in this self-help work. Mathurin conceived of his debut book when he realized how critical checklists are in the worlds of naval aviation and medicine. Itemized lists, he says, help avoid flight mishaps and operating room errors, so he wondered, ‘Why not apply this same concept to people’s lives to help them achieve their highest potential?’ That epiphany resulted in this book - a kind of instruction manual for living that breaks achievement into seven ‘checklist items: ‘Goals’, ‘Take Action’, ‘Courage to Consistently Commit’, ‘Value Resources’, ‘Investing in Yourself and Others’, ‘Giving Back’, and ‘Create a Legacy of Service to Others’. An introductory section helpfully explains each of the core concepts, in brief, and these same blocks of text are repeated at the beginning of each of seven chapters. The items themselves are unlikely to be new to most readers, as many of the ideas are common in self-help literature (such as ‘Have the courage to go the extra mile with everything that you do, each and every time’). But the presentation of the material feels more novel, as the overarching checklist concept isn’t taken literally; the book’s merit derives from the idea that one can systematically address several broad areas in the quest for a fuller life. At the very least, this notion gives the book a highly focused structure that makes it easy for readers to navigate. Unsurprisingly, given the author’s military and medical background, there’s a sense of logic and precision to this book. Each chapter’s content is uniformly positive and always emphasizes proactivity, but it’s also clear that the book isn’t intended to highlight step-by-step procedure. Instead, it offers a wide-ranging, general discussion of each list item, using examples and personal anecdotes to illustrate specific points. To that end, Mathurin writes from a very personal perspective - sharing, for example, how he grew ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: J.D. Hart.
