The Professor of Secrets: Mystery, Medicine, and Alchemy in Renaissance Italy , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 672min
In the tradition of Galileo's Daughter and Brunelleschi's Dome, this exciting story illuminates the captivating world of the late Renaissance - in this case its plagues, remedies, and alchemy - through the life of Leonardo Fioravanti, a brilliant, remarkably forward-thinking, and utterly unconventional doctor. Fioravanti's marvelous cures and talent for self-aggrandizement earned him the adoration of the people, the scorn of the medical establishment, and a reputation as one of the age's most colorful, combative figures. Written by Pulitzer-prize nominated historian William Eamon, The Professor of Secrets entices readers into a dangerous scientific underworld of sorcerers and surgeons. Meticulously researched and engagingly written, this gripping narrative will appeal to those interested in Renaissance history, the development of science, and the historical thrillers so popular today. ungekürzt. Embodied Morality: Protectionism, Engagement and Imagination
In this book the broad, interdisciplinary theory of Triune Ethics Meta-theory is explored to demonstrate how it explains the different patterns of morality seen in the world today. It describes how human morality develops dynamically from experience in early life and it proposes that the methods in which humans are raised bring about tendencies towards self-protective or open-hearted social relations. When the life course follows evolutionary systems, then prosocial, open-hearted capacities develop but when the life course goes against evolutionary systems it should not be a surprise that self-focused values and behaviors develop such as violent tribalism, self aggrandizement and a binary orientation to others (dominance or submission). Many humans alive today exhibit impaired capacities in comparison to humans from small-band hunter-gatherer societies, the type of society that represents 99% of humanity's history. TEM is rooted in ethical naturalism and points out how to optimize human moral development through the lifespan-toward the ethics of engagement and communal imagination.- Shop: buecher

The Magickal Moment of Now: The Inner Mind of the Advanced Magician , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 48min
In this book I'm going to deal with what magick is, I'm going to go into why magick works when you actually perform a ritual, of course it does involve spirits and it does involve supernatural powers but there is another reason. If you notice that the more intention you have towards the ritual, the more effective it is, so there is an individual component in every single ritual. In many ways Aliester Crowley was right to say "Do What though wilt shall be be whole of the law" but I'm going to say, yes, unabashed individualism is fine, but it's unabashed individualism within the collective and we have to remember that. No man is an island and those who persecute you are also part of you. We will discuss individuality, embracing of the dark side, being present in life. We will discuss how formality in magick is actually destroying it and making it harder for people to perform it. We discuss the dangers of making magick a form of escapism and of self-aggrandizement. You will learn about embracing your individuality. You will also learn how group consciousness affects your magick. I will also get a bit more personal about some of my own life experiences. With that, let us begin. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Baal Kadmon. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/060042/bk_acx0_060042_sample.mp3. The Great Wall of China: The History of China's Most Famous Landmark , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 76min
The Great Wall of China is perhaps the wonder of the world that has most captured the human imagination, and as the quotes about it indicate, the wall has acquired special significance even outside of China. The places and ways in which it has taken hold vary greatly, but one thing is certain: The Great Wall of China is as amazing as it is mysterious, and it's as mundane as it is magical. Naturally the Wall has become the most recognizable symbol of China, used for both aggrandizement and criticism. Nationalists see it as a symbol of China's peaceful nature, engineering capability, and historic longevity while detractors see the wall as the embodiment of China's backwardness, closed-mindedness, and hubris. While history allots arguments for the claims of each side, both of them are colored by Great Wall mythology and current geopolitical concerns. Though the wall can symbolize all of these things about China, it is important to remember that the many long walls, upon some of which the current landmark was constructed, were put up by specific people for specific purposes. The first step to a more accurate conception of the wall is getting a better understanding of its name because "The Great Wall of China" is a misleading label. More accurately it may be called the "Great Walls of China," for several dynasties beginning early in Chinese history built fortifications of some kind, usually to the north. These constructions were alternately expanded, connected, dismantled, or neglected depending on the circumstances and preferences of those in charge. ungekürzt. Language: English. The Rock of Chickamauga: The Life and Career of General George H. Thomas , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 115min
[Ulysses S. Grant and George H. Thomas deserve] monuments like those of Nelson and Wellington in London, well worthy to stand side by side with the one which now graces our capitol city of 'George Washington.' - William Tecumseh Sherman One of the most unique and effective generals of the Civil War also happens to be one of the most overlooked. While there is a never ending stream of acclaim going to generals like Grant, Lee, and Sherman, General George H. Thomas has managed to fly under the radar, despite having an unusual background as a Southerner fighting for the Union and scoring almost inconceivable successes at Missionary Ridge, Franklin, and Nashville. Thomas also skillfully fought at Perryville, Stones River, and in Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. Despite all of those successes, however, Thomas is best remembered as "The Rock of Chickamauga". Thomas had one of the most stellar records of any officer in the war, was instrumental in the Union's ultimate victory in the Western theater, and scored the kinds of decisive victories that eluded more celebrated generals like Lee. So why does Thomas fly under the radar? A stern military man, Thomas eschewed self-promotion and aggrandizement, and though his methodical generalship was almost always successful, it sometimes annoyed General Ulysses S. Grant. With Grant's star rising as his relationship with Thomas was cooling, Thomas was on the wrong end of history. And when he died in 1870, Thomas had burned his papers and had not written memoirs or an account of his participation in the war, missing his final opportunity to directly leave his mark instead of having others write it for him. ungekürzt. The Most Dangerous Branch: Inside the Supreme Court's Assault on the Constitution , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 995min
In the best-selling tradition of The Nine and The Brethren, The Most Dangerous Branch takes us inside the secret world of the Supreme Court. David A. Kaplan, the former legal affairs editor of Newsweek, shows how the justices subvert the role of the other branches of government - and how we’ve come to accept it at our peril. Never before has the Court been more central in American life. It is now the nine justices who too often decide the biggest issues of our time - from abortion and same-sex marriage to gun control, campaign finance, and voting rights. The Court is so crucial that many voters in 2016 made their choice based on whom they thought their presidential candidate would name to the Court. Donald Trump picked Neil Gorsuch - the key decision of his new administration. The newest justice, Brett Kavanaugh - replacing Anthony Kennedy - is even more important, holding the swing vote over so much social policy. With the 2020 campaign underway, and with two justices in their ’80s, the Court looms even larger. Is that really how democracy is supposed to work? Based on exclusive interviews with the justices, Kaplan provides fresh details about life behind the scenes at the Court: the reaction to Kavanaugh’s controversial arrival, the new role for Chief Justice John Roberts, Clarence Thomas's simmering rage, Antonin Scalia's death, Ruth Bader Ginsburg's celebrity, Breyer Bingo, and the petty feuding between Gorsuch and the chief justice. Kaplan offers a sweeping narrative of the justices’ aggrandizement of power over the decades - from Roe v. Wade to Bush v. Gore to Citizens United. (He also faults the Court for not getting involved when it should - for example, to limit partisan gerrymandering.) But the arrogance of the Court isn't partisan: Conservative and liberal justices alike are guilty of overreach. Challenging conventional wisdom about th ungekürzt. Language: English. Strings of Hope: A Companion of Hope , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 135min
The waves and wind that produce the storms of our lives are real. The struggle is real. In life we sometimes face issues that really challenge our discipleship and faithfulness. At such moments hope begins to wane and we live on the edge of hope. Options become limited and one gets stuck, overwhelmed, and crying out for help without a clear answer on the way. What do you do? Do not allow your fears hold you back when you are living on the edge of hope. They will trap you. Activate whatever measure of hope and faith that is left to keep your head above the crashing waves. Faith does not necessarily save us from storms, trials, tribulations, or suffering. What it does is to give us strength to face them. Faith gives us hope when despair threatens us. Our hope in God is not a bookmark in the Bible that is consulted once in a while. It is a way of living because hope puts its hands to work How lovely on the mountain are the feet of those who bring good news (Isaiah 52:7).These words are even more relevant in our times and in our nation: The reality of dwindling and weakening faith, "diluted" and misinterpretation of scriptures, use of scripture, and the word of God for personal aggrandizement, unbridled innovations in living out the Christian life, and so on, throw a big challenge at people's interpretation, understanding and living out of the scripture. These challenges notwithstanding, the word of God has to be preached. The call for all to witness with a good life has its foundation in a good interpretation of the preached word. This ought to be proclaimed in and out of season. One who is grounded in the word will naturally teach the word and even live it out. Like Romans 10:14 remarks; “how then are they to call on him if they have not come to believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard him? And how will they hear of him unless there is a preacher?" Buy this audiobook now. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jk Gregg.
