A whimsical, moving novel about a retirement home for literary legends who spar, conjure up new stories, and almost magically change the lives of the people around them. Alfonse Carducci was a literary giant who lived his life to excess - lovers, alcohol, parties, and literary rivalries. But now he's come to the Bar Harbor Home for the Elderly to spend the remainder of his days among kindred spirits: the publishing industry's nearly gone but never forgotten greats. Only now, at the end of his life, does he comprehend the price of appeasing every desire, and the consequences of forsaking love to pursue greatness. For Alfonse has an unshakeable case of writer's block that distresses him much more than his precarious health. Set on the water in one of New England's most beautiful locales, the Bar Harbor Home was established specifically for elderly writers needing a place to live out their golden years - or final days - in understated luxury and surrounded by congenial literary company. A faithful staff of nurses and orderlies surround the writers, and are drawn into their orbit, as they are forced to reckon with their own life stories. Among them are Cecibel Bringer, a young woman who knows first-hand the cost of chasing excess. A terrible accident destroyed her face and her sister in a split-second decision that Cecibel can never forgive, though she has tried to forget. Living quietly as an orderly, refusing to risk again the cost of love, Cecibel never anticipated the impact of meeting her favorite writer, Alfonse Carducci - or the effect he would have on her existence. In Cecibel, Alfonse finds a muse who returns him to the passion he thought he lost. As the words flow from him, weaving a tale taken up by the other residents of the Pen, Cecibel is reawakened to the idea of love and forgiveness. As the edges between story and reality blur, a world within a world is created. It’s a place where the old are made young, the damaged are made whole ungekürzt. Language: English. After my wife, Elizabeth Church, was murdered by the bellman Alfonse Padgett in the Essex Hotel, she did not leave me. Sam Lattimore meets Elizabeth Church in 1970s Halifax, in an art gallery. The sparks are immediate, leading quickly to a marriage that is dear, erotically charged, and brief. In Howard Norman's spellbinding and moving novel, the gleam of the marriage and the circumstances of Elizabeth's murder are revealed in heart-stopping increments. Sam's life afterward is complicated. For one thing, in a moment of desperate confusion, he sells his life story to a Norwegian filmmaker named Istvakson, known for the stylized violence of his films, whose artistic drive sets in motion an increasingly intense cat-and-mouse game between the two men. For another, Sam has begun "seeing" Elizabeth - not only seeing but holding conversations with her, almost every evening, and watching her line up books on a small beach. What at first seems simply a hallucination born of terrible grief reveals itself, evening by evening, as something else entirely. Next Life Might Be Kinder is a story of murder, desperate faith, the afterlife, and love as absolute redemption - from one of our most compelling storytellers at the height of his talents. ungekürzt. Brooklyn Italian: Remembering Williamsburg will take you on a journey back in time. To a neighborhood in the borough of Brooklyn, New York, called Williamsburg. From the beginning of its existence in 1638 to present day, through the rise of industry, two world wars, the Depression of the late 1920s, the rise of the mafia and the immigrants who settled there in search for a better life. In their own words, long-time residents tell their stories of a time when on summer evenings, family and friends gathered on stoops to talk about the happenings of the day or just to share a cup of coffee, when children played stick ball, jacks, and hopscotch till the street lamps came on.... When a handshake meant trust and respect was earned. They came for a better life for themselves and their children. Many enclaves with cultural differences, yet sharing one vision: to pursue the American dream. The freedom to choose, to become, to survive. While notables such as Corning Ware, Standard Oil, and Domino Sugar found Williamsburg to be a profitable place to call home, other notables were making their mark in Williamsburg as well such as the Bonanno family underboss Carmine Galante and the infamous Bugsy Siegel and Alfonse Capone. In their own words, long-time residents of Williamsburg Brooklyn share their life history in letters telling the world what it was like living during the Great Depression, WWII, poverty, and survival. As with each generation change is inevitable and it’s change that allows us to pass on the stories of the generations before, preserving the past to become an integrated part of our future. ungekürzt. Walter Mosley and his new hero, Leonid McGill, are back in the new New York Times best-selling mystery series that's already being hailed as a classic of contemporary noir. Leonid McGill - the protagonist introduced in The Long Fall, the book that returned Walter Mosley to best-seller lists nationwide - is still fighting to stick to his reformed ways while the world around him pulls him in every other direction. He has split up with his girlfriend, Aura, because his new self won't let him leave his wife - but then Aura's new boyfriend starts angling to get Leonid kicked out of his prime, top-of-theskyscraper office space. Meanwhile, one of his sons seems to have found true love - but the girl has a shady past that's all of sudden threatening the whole McGill family. And his other son, the charming rogue Twilliam, is doing nothing but enabling the crisis. Most ominously of all, Alfonse Rinaldo, the mysterious power-behind- the-throne at City Hall, the fixer who seems to control every little thing that happens in New York City, has a problem that even he can't fix - and he's come to Leonid for help. It seems a young woman has disappeared, leaving murder in her wake, and it means everything to Rinaldo to track her down. But he won't tell McGill his motives, which doesn't quite square with the new company policy - but turning down Rinaldo is almost impossible to even contemplate. Known to Evil delivers on all the promise of the characters and story lines introduced in The Long Fall, and then some. It careens fast and deep into gritty, glittery contemporary Manhattan, making the city pulse in a whole new way, and it firmly establishes Leonid McGill as one of the mystery world's most iconic, charismatic leading men. ungekürzt.
