Diana, a little black cat, is bored by the long, cold days. Cyrus, her older and wiser friend, tries to keep her out of trouble with regular lectures, but temptations are everywhere. From sliding on the kitchen towel to "capturing" the sewing room tape measure, Diana is on the prowl for fun, when what should she discover but the most amazing tree she has ever seen - with "pretty bobbles and balls just begging to be knocked off and batted around the room." When their mischief is discovered, the two house cats have a night out in the snow to look forward to. But it is, after all, the Christmas season, with charity even for two ornery cats. ungekürzt. It was the year that Joe DiMaggio set his 56-game hitting streak, that Ted Williams batted .406, that the Dodgers and the Yankees battled each other in a classic World Series, and that America went to war. In this look at what he calls "the best baseball season ever", Robert Creamer skillfully intertwines all these epochal baseball happenings with an informal history of a pivotal period in American life, as well as with his own memories of what it was like to be 18 and a baseball fan when a looming war and the game he loved vied for his attention. For all who love baseball, Baseball in '41 makes it clear why the game is still the purest representation of the American Dream. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Tom Parker. Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams, distinct but similar-type players, were arguably baseball's greatest player and baseball's greatest hitter. In their first major league seasons, Joe scored a rookie-record 132 runs, and Ted drove home a rookie-record 145 runs. More than 70 years later, their records still stand. Joe should have batted .400 in 1939; Ted did hit .406 in 1941. Batting .412 in early September, the Clipper suffered a serious eye infection, and his average plummeted to 381, which was still 21 points higher than Jimmie Foxx, the runner-up hitter in the batting race. The year 1941 was a mystical one in baseball history. DiMag hit safely in a record 56 consecutive games. During Joe's sensational run, Ted out hit him, .412 to .406. Unbelievably, at the All-Star Game, Joe's streak stood at 48 consecutive games, and Ted was batting .404. You can believe that they got the attention of the other stars that year. Ted won Triple Crowns but not MVP awards in both 1942 and 1947. (There are two stories there.) Joe beat out Ted in the 1947 voting, 202 to 201. The Kid hit the game-winning walk-off home run in the 1941 All-Star Game. In the 1946 Mid-summer Classic, he got four hits, including two home runs, one of them the first ever four-base blast off Rip Sewell's celebrated "eephus ball" pitch. Early in 1947, co-owner Dan Topping of the Yankees and owner Tom Yawkey of the Red Sox agreed on an even-up trade of Joe for Ted. If it had been made, it would have altered baseball history considerably. Joe and Ted were known for their gallant comebacks. In his last three years (1949-1951), the Clipper returned from either injury or illness to lead the Yankees to three consecutive world titles. In his last three games of the 1951 World Series, his final one, he batted .545 with one home run and five RBI. In his last major league at bat, he doubled off the right center field wall at Yankee Stadium. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Troy Klein. In the heart of Ashington - a bustling Geordie mining town - a handsome red-brick vicarage, surrounded by rambling gardens, stands proudly among the rows of terraced houses. It is the perfect place for playing games, keeping secrets, and chasing the ghosts of previous occupants, and it will be nine-year-old Barbara's new home now that her father is to be vicar in this strange new place. In this charming memoir, Barbara Fox recalls a childhood where parishioners knocked on the door at all hours of the day and night, and where no one batted an eye at the collection of waifs and strays who regularly joined the family at the kitchen table. This is a warm-hearted, classic tale of family, community, and the unforgettable thrill of childhood adventure. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Janine Birkett. Ted Williams defined excellence in whatever he took on. Whether he was playing left field in the major leagues, or flying an airplane, Williams would not settle for second-best. He played 21 seasons with the Boston Red Sox in a career interrupted two times by service as a Marine Corps pilot. He is widely considered one of the greatest hitters in baseball, was a two-time American League MVP, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. In 1941, he batted over .400 in a single season and no one has touched the record since. Ironically, Williams attributes the secret of his success to 'pure luck.' Here, Williams is interviewed in Boston during All-Star Week by Ann Liguori, award-winning luminary in sports broadcasting with a celebrated career that spans two decades. Liguori has interviewed some of the most legendary sports personalities, drawing out their success stories, their opinions on a variety of issues, and their love of the game. Language: English.
