Since Alexis de Tocqueville, restlessness has been accepted as a signature American trait. Our willingness to move, take risks, and adapt to change have produced a dynamic economy and a tradition of innovation from Ben Franklin to Steve Jobs. The problem, according to legendary blogger, economist, and best-selling author Tyler Cowen, is that Americans today have broken from this tradition - we're working harder than ever to avoid change. We're moving residences less, marrying people more like ourselves, and choosing our music and our mates based on algorithms that wall us off from anything that might be too new or too different. Match.com matches us in love. Spotify and Pandora match us in music. Facebook matches us to just about everything else. Of course, this "matching culture" brings tremendous positives: music we like, partners who make us happy, neighbors who want the same things. We're more comfortable. But, according to Cowen, there are significant collateral downsides attending this comfort, among them heightened inequality and segregation and decreased incentives to innovate and create. The Complacent Class argues that this cannot go on forever. We are postponing change due to our nearsightedness and extreme desire for comfort, but ultimately this will make change, when it comes, harder. The forces unleashed by the Great Stagnation will eventually lead to a major fiscal and budgetary crisis: impossibly expensive rentals for our most attractive cities, worsening of residential segregation, and a decline in our work ethic. The only way to avoid this difficult future is for Americans to force themselves out of their comfortable slumber - to embrace their restless tradition again. ungekürzt. Language: English. The more complacent, the more opportunity you have to change your life. I hope to change your perspective about complacency. I hope for you to connect and understand my view and find my words inspiring. Complacency is what happens to you when you are not living or being held back from a life true to who you are. Lots of times, people are unaware they are in a complacent state of mind; they see it as just being depressed and feel like they want to change their situation, but they cannot. They feel stuck, lost, and useless. Being complacent can make you have signs of depression; however, being complacent in itself is not depression. In order to really solve complacency, you have to really understand what the true core of your complacency is and begin to call it out for what it is. Many times, people may think they can set goals, take some time off to regroup, and it may work...temporarily. Too often than not, the feeling comes back. Why can’t I just be happy? It’s time to stop using band-aid type approaches to fix complacency. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Lori VanScyoc. In this magisterial history, David Nirenberg explores anti-Judaism from antiquity to the present, from the Ancient Egyptians who resented their Jewish neighbours to the ideas of Voltaire and Marx, thereby revealing it to be a mode of thought deeply embedded in the Western tradition. With intolerance and racism on the rise across the West, the central argument of David Nirenberg's groundbreaking study - that to imagine anti-Judaism to be confined to the margins of our society is to be dangerously complacent - is as urgent and as timely as it has ever been.
