Ivanhoe , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1193min
This is one of Sir Walter Scott's greatest adventures, set amongst the roaring battles of the struggle between the Normans and the Saxons for control of medieval England. It deals with the rivalry between King Richard the Lion-Heart and his brother, John. We follow the adventures, skirmishes and romances of the hero, Ivanhoe, a Saxon knight loyal to King Richard, as he attempts to survive the England of King John alongside the disguised Richard and, of course, Robin Hood. Author Sir Walter Scott, first Baronet (1771-1832), was a prolific Scottish historical novelist and poet. His father was a lawyer who had brought himself from the family's rural background into legal eminence in Edinburgh, married a well-born girl and was very anxious that his children should continue his process of advancement for the Scott family. Scott himself was an early victim of polio, only just surviving by dint of being sent back to what remained of the family seat to live with his grandmother. It was she who introduced him to Scottish folklore and ballads, which were to be so influential in his writing career, with novels such as Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, The Lady of the Lake, Waverley, The Heart of Midlothian and The Bride of Lammermoor. ungekürzt. Sisterly Love , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 602min
Sisterly Love is about the unique bonds of sisterhood.... This is certainly not a story with its conventional beginning, middle, and end, although all that does happen in it. But I have wanted to depict eras and places through the lives of two sisters, and these come and go at will, following the need that each of the sisters has to relate her memories or to comment on her present. So I suppose I could say that there is a story line, but it is not conventionally told. The story of their lives begins in the early years of the 20th century with the usual sibling rivalries and disputes exaggerated by the presence of an obnoxious aunt, and we revisit them from time to time, starting in the 1930s. Elsie typifies the solid, conservative, hardworking office girl. Lillian shifts with ease from one boyfriend to another, from one husband to another, from one boss to another, from one country to another, yet she always returns to take refuge by either Elsie's or Horace's (their young brother's) home fires. By dint of Lillian's wanderings, the novel moves from London to an English country village, to South Africa, to Australia, to Spain, back to London, all vividly evoked through reminiscence. It is loneliness in their advancing years that forces them into each other's company, despite themselves. It is the sadness of having nothing else in life that inevitably flings them against one another, painfully peeling away the layers of their past existences and forcing them to surrender themselves to the irritating state of undesired dependence. It is the inescapable pathos of two lives reduced by the passing years to grumpy proximity in a small bedsitter that breathes life into Sisterly Love.... My aim was to write about how youth transforms into old age with a certain humor, sadness, and sensitivity. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Diana Hutton. He was born in Tallahassee, Florida, and reared, until he was 12, primarily by his mother, Ruby, a strict disciplinarian. Then, the break-up of his home sent him to New York City to live with his Aunt Della. She was the first person to make chocolate chip cookies for him, and it was that introduction which ultimately led to the creation of his famous cookies. In both instances, he started as low man on the totem pole and by dint of hard work, climbed rapidly. American Legends: The Life of Gloria Swanson , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 88min
Fame was thrilling only until it became grueling. Money was fun only until you ran out of things to buy. - Gloria Swanson. It goes without saying that the most enduring image of Gloria Swanson is the famous shot of her in Sunset Boulevard (1950), head tilted backward, stating, "Alright, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close up." Indeed, for many, the very mention of "Gloria Swanson" conjures the name of "Norma Desmond," her character in Sunset Boulevard, directed by Billy Wilder. That the shot of Desmond requesting her close-up remains indelibly imprinted in the minds of so many speaks in large part to the power of Sunset Boulevard, one of the most revered films of its times and the most famous film of Gloria Swanson's career. By dint of her performance in the film, Swanson has become almost synonymous with Hollywood's silent era. In many respects, Swanson's status as the female face of the silent era is entirely apropos. Working in the 1920s for Cecil B. DeMille in his lavish productions, Swanson commanded salaries of more than $1 million per year, sums that Paramount was only too willing to provide for the virtual guarantee of high box office receipts that her films provided. Swanson worked with a cross section of famous silent era figures, such Mack Sennett and Charlie Chaplin (although her experience with Chaplin did not fare well) during her early years with Keystone, as well as collaborations with DeMille and Erich Von Stroheim during her more mature years. Yet at the same time, the histrionics of Swanson's character in Wilder's film belie the sophistication that Swanson brought to the screen, as well as the salient role she played in shaping cinematic representations of women during the onset of the "new woman" in 1920s America. Capital Volume 3: A Critique of Political Economy , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 3004min
After the detailed history and workings of the development of capitalism in Capital Volumes I and 2, Marx set out, in Capital Volume 3 to consider the future of capitalism, its direction and its inevitable fall from a series of crises and faults intrinsic to the system itself.Published in 1894, 11 years after the death of Marx himself, Capital Volume 3 was the product of the untiring and meticulous work of Friedrich Engels working from Marx’s outline and notes and carried the subtitle The Process of Capitalist Production as a Whole. In seven parts, Marx and Engels were determined to demonstrate that private property, competition and the market economy driven by the profit motive must lead to the demise of capitalism. They were convinced that only the curbing of the individual profit motive can lead to the end of the mass poverty and the destitution that was evident to Marx, Engels and many others concerned with the social inequities of civilisation continuing throughout history. The following comes from chapter 5: 'Capitalist production, when considered in isolation from the process of circulation and the excesses of competition, is very economical with the materialised labour incorporated in commodities. Yet, more than any other mode of production, it squanders human lives, or living-labour, and not only blood and flesh, but also nerve and brain. Indeed, it is only by dint of the most extravagant waste of individual development that the development of the human race is at all safeguarded and maintained in the epoch of history immediately preceding the conscious reorganisation of society.' The seven parts of Capital Volume 3 are: The conversion of Surplus-Value into Profit and the Rate of Surplus-Value into the Rate of Profit. Conversion of Profit into Average Profit. The Law of the Tendency of the Rate of Profit to Fall. Conversion of Commodity-C ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Derek Le Page. One Righteous Man: Samuel Battle and the Shattering of the Color Line in New York , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 782min
A history of African Americans in New York City from the 1910s to 1960, told through the life of Samuel Battle, the New York Police Department's first Black officer. When Samuel Battle broke the color line as New York City's first African American cop in the second decade of the 20th century, he had to fear his racist colleagues as much as criminals. He had to be three times better than his White peers and many times more resilient. His life was threatened. He was displayed like a circus animal. Yet, fearlessly claiming his rights, he prevailed in a four-decade odyssey that is both the story of one man's courageous dedication to racial progress and a harbinger of the divisions between police and the people they serve that plague 21st-century America. By dint of brains, brawn, and an outsized personality, Battle rode the forward wave of African American history in New York. He circulated among renowned turn-of-the-century entertainers and writers. He weathered threatening hostility as a founding citizen of Black Harlem. He served as "godfather" to the regiment of Black soldiers who won glory in World War I as the "Hellfighters of Harlem". He befriended sports stars like Joe Louis, Jesse Owens, and Sugar Ray Robinson, and he bonded with legendary tap dancer Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. Along the way, he mentored an equally smart, equally tough young man in a still more brutal fight to integrate the New York Fire Department. At the close of his career, Battle looked back proudly on the against-all-odds journey taken by a man who came of age as the son of former slaves in the South. He had navigated the corruption of Tammany Hall, the treachery of gangsters like Lucky Luciano and Dutch Schultz, the anything-goes era of Prohibition, the devastation of the Depression, and the race riots that erupted in Harlem in the 1930s and 1940s. By then he was a trusted aide to Mayor Fiorello La Guardia and a friend to First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dominic Hoffman.
