Here Comes Exterminator!: The Longshot Horse, the Great War, and the Making of an American Hero , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 509min
The father of the Kentucky Derby called him "the greatest all-around Thoroughbred in American racing history". Sportswriter Grantland Rice simply called him "the greatest racehorse". Now Eliza McGraw tells the story of how a gangling, long-shot Kentucky Derby winner named Exterminator became one of the most beloved racehorses of all time. Here Comes Exterminator! draws listeners into the golden age of racing, with all its ups and downs, the ever-involving interplay of horses and people, and the beauty, grace, fear, and hope that are a daily part of life at the track. Caught between his hotheaded millionaire owner and his knowledgeable trainer, Exterminator captured fans' affection with his personality, consistency, athleticism, and heart. Exterminator's staggering success would dramatically change the world of horse racing. He challenged the notion that American horses would never live up to Europe's meticulously charted bloodlines and became a patriotic icon of the country after World War I. And his longevity established him as one of the public's most beloved athletes, paving the way for equine celebrities like Seabiscuit and showing Americans they could claim - and love - a famous racehorse as their own. ungekürzt. The Snow Queen and Other Fairy Stories , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 297min
Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales have become so much a part of the Western culture that they are often assumed to be a part of folklore and not credited to the strange and gangling Dane who wrote them. Several years before the fairy tales came out, the Brothers Grimm had published their tales taken from the folklore of European stories, but Andersen was to change the understanding of what a tale can achieve. His tales were not the black-and-white moral fables of previous fairy stories; here there was ambiguity. Very often the bringer of truth and understanding would be a child, not a good fairy or an angel. And, most surprisingly for his readers, more often than not there would be no happy ending. Many of his stories deal with the concept of being different or misunderstood. This is presumed to be a direct reflection of Andersen's life. He was a strange child and grew into a man who seldom felt he belonged. This is beautifully explored in stories like "The Ugly Duckling", giving a form to that very common feeling of not being recognised for what we are. His indeterminate sexuality is often ascribed as one of the main driving forces behind his writing - "The Little Mermaid" is said to be one of his explorations of impossible love. "The Snow Queen" is the longest and most intriguing of all his stories and is almost a Pilgrim's Progress, with the heroine battling temptation and wickedness to free her less virtuous playfellow from the clutches of the gloriously evil Snow Queen. These are not the fairy stories of the pink princess in the sparkly palace. They are, however, some of the most popular and powerful of all stories. They have been copied and adapted almost continuously since he wrote them, and we think you will love them as much as we do. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Greta Scacchi. The Moon Shines Red : Heart of Darkness, Book 1 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 541min
Award-winning author, Pamela Sparkman's fantasy novel is tantalizingly wicked, drawing the listener into a world of forbidden love where nothing is quite what it seems.Lord Lochlan was cursed in the womb, condemned by the perceived crimes of his parents. On the 13th year of his birth, the red glow of the moon washed over land and sea like a faded bloody stain. A constant reminder of the curse that marked him before he was born. Every night he gazed at it like he was lured and haunted by it. It followed him, it beseeched him. It called out to him. Just once he wanted to see the moon glow as everyone else saw it. Bright and illuminating. But he knew that would never be possible. The all too familiar feeling of despair suffocated him, like long gangling fingers squeezing his neck, cutting off his air. He fell to his knees and begged for the sky to fall on him. He had suffered long and tirelessly and he was desperate for it to end. And yet, he fought to breathe. He fought to stand back on his feet. Because fighting back was as instinctual to him as breathing. He had come too far to let his loneliness and despair get the best of him now. He was battle worn and weary, but he still had a reason to live.Or so he hoped. He stood back on his feet and he fought against the doom that hovered over him since the day he was born and he stared up into the darkened sky.At the moon that shines red only for him.I should have stayed away from him. But I couldn't. HE was my love...my life. And he just might kill me. I suppose that means...he may also be my end. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Steven Ritz-Barr.
