In The Dolphin's Wake: Cocktails, Calamities, and Caiques in the Greek Islands , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 506min
An amusing and erudite account of Harry Bucknall's 183-day journey through the Greek islands from Venice, in the West, to Istanbul, in the East. In the summer of 2006, Harry Bucknall travelled from Venice to Istanbul - a journey across the Aegean of more than 5,500 miles that included the glories of Mount Athos, 36 islands, and every island chain in the Greek Archipelago. It also involved 57 sea passages on 35 ferries, 4 landing craft, 3 hydrofoils, a fishing caique, a sea plane, 11 buses, 2 trains, an open-top Land Rover, and a duck-egg-blue 1961 Morris Oxford. Recounted with humour, pathos, and at times drama, this is not only a journey through the Greek islands but also a journey through Greek history, mythology, custom, and folklore - a Greek island companion loaded with adventure, mishap, and laughter offering a contemporary image of Aegean life today. ungekürzt. Alexander Graham Bell , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 49min
The biography of the teacher of the deaf who, through his knowledge of music, human speech, and hearing, invented the telephone. Alexander Graham Bell was a pioneer in many fields that aided communication over distances. He worked tirelessly to help the deaf communicate with others (even Helen Keller came to him for help). After the telephone, Bell invented the photophone (a device that uses a beam of light to transmit sound wirelessly), and developed phonographic sound recording methods. As a spin-off from his work with the telephone, Bell also invented the metal detector. A supporter of man's "Pioneering Spirit", Bell became one of the founders of the National Geographic Society. Bell felt that flight would be an effective way to bring people together. Forming the Aerial Experiment Association and working with a team of aviation pioneers such as Glenn H. Curtiss, Bell's Red Wing was able to make the first public demonstration of powered human flight in North America. Unlike the deadly Wright Flyer, the Red Wing could take-off under its own power without the need of a supplementary catapult, and could make turns safely. One of Bell's aviation inventions, the aileron, is used on all aircraft to this day. Bell also experimented with hydrofoils, culminating in the marine speed record setting HD-4. ungekürzt.
