The Immoderate Temper of Mrs. Chen's Daughter is the story of a woman who knows how to use a cleaver. It is an exploration of the Chinese proverb "to hit is to kiss, to curse is to love". It is a tale of China and Jews, of passion and politics, of revolution and mah-jongg. The author has traveled extensively in China. In this novel he writes of a time when Chinese history and Jewish history collide in the Shanghai ghetto. One reader called it a cross between Portnoy's Complaint and Kill Bill. If you enjoyed The Good Earth, Wild Swans, The Tin Drum, or The Painted Bird, this book belongs on your listening list. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Robert Sultan. Barbara Gowdy's outrageous, hilarious, disturbing, and compassionate novel is about the Canary family, their immoderate passions and eccentricities, and their secret lives and histories. The deepest secret of all is harbored in the silence of the youngest daughter, Joan, who doesn't grow, who doesn't speak, but who can play the piano like Mozart though she's never had a lesson. Joan is a mystery, and in the novel's stunning climax her family comes to understand that each of them is a mystery, as marvelous as Joan, as irreducible as the mystery of life itself. In its compassionate investigation of moral truths and its bold embrace of the fractured nature of every one of its characters, Mister Sandman attains the heightened quality of a modern-day parable. ungekürzt. Early in the decade of 2000, the Department of Human Services of the Ellsworth, Maine, Child Protective Division, along with other municipalities, came under scrutiny for their questionable policies and immoderate tactics. Discover how a toothache led to a two-year nightmare for this quiet and law-abiding family. (Well...kinda quiet and law-abiding). Sky is a multi-emotion-provoking love story about a mismatched couple and their struggle to save their marriage amid their valiant battle for custody of their child against this powerful but once highly criticized state agency. This is an essential listen for any parent who has picked up a drink or a drug. Interspersed with actual documents from the case, including brief news clippings, highly personal letters, and court decisions, Mr. West offers, in a chronological exposé, a passionate exploration of and stark contrast to the realities of substance abuse and parenting, with mental illness and morals and with his occasional awareness of the presence of God. Written with wry humor seemingly, at times, to mask his own heartbreak, West lays out his perspective with blunt, piercing honesty while allowing the listener to be the ultimate judge. ungekürzt. "Rooted in historical, site-based, narrative, and political accounts, Full Surrogacy Now is the seriously radical cry for full gestational justice that I long for. This kind of gestation depends on realizing the implications of knowing that we all actually, materially, make one another, and that this labor continues to be exploited, extracted, and alienatedunequallyat every turn in Capitalism and Patriarchy. Full of brilliant, generative, and also shamelessly biting critique of both bourgeois and communist tracts, feminist and otherwise, Lewiss voice is unique and bracing. I need it; it fills my whole self with reimagined possibilities for making oddkin who are not property. Lewis set out to write an immoderate, utopian, partisan, anti-authoritarian communist defense of surrogates and surrogacy in ramifying registers of meanings and practices, and she has succeeded. Lewis asks the necessary questions, Can we parent politically, hopefully, nonreproductivelyin a comradely way? Can we become full surrogates for and with each other? In a book full of fierce demystifications and sharp dissections of injustice masquerading as humanitarianism, nonetheless Lewis convincingly and radically affirms: Everywhere about me, I can see beautiful militants hell-bent on regeneration, not self-replication. The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire has always maintained its initial appeal to both the general public and scholars alike. Its sheer scale is daunting, encompassing over a millennium of history, covering not merely the Western Empire from the days of the early emperors to its extinction in AD 476, but also the Eastern Empire, which lasted for another thousand years until the Turks vanquished it in 1453. But Gibbon’s style, part historical fact and part literature, is enticing, and the sheer honesty of the man, who endeavors to be scrupulously impartial in his presentation, endears him to the listener. In this recording, David Timson incorporates the most salient of Gibbon’s footnotes. In Volume IV (Chapters XXXVII–XLVI), Gibbon explores the state of the Roman provinces after the dissolution of the Western Empire, and examines the reasons for its fall - not excluding its ‘immoderate greatness’. He then moves to the Empire in the East and its rule under Justinian (527-565), whose formidable leadership saw the re-fortification of Constantinople and the frontiers of the Eastern Empire. However, dangerous times remain ahead as the Persians make attempts to siege Constantinople. Gibbon ends with the state of the Eastern Empire in the sixth century and its weaknesses after a long war. Amoris Laetitia (Latin for The Joy of Love) is the postsynodal apostolic exhortation by Pope Francis. Dated March 19, 2016, and released on April 8, 2016. It follows the Synods on the Family held in 2014 and 2015. Its introduction and nine chapters comprise 325 numbered paragraphs. Quotations are drawn from earlier popes, documents of the Second Vatican Council and regional bishops' conferences, St. Thomas Aquinas, and Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. It includes what is thought to be the first reference to a film in a papal document, Babette's Feast (1987), along with references to works by Jorge Luis Borges, Octavio Paz, Antonin Sertillanges, Gabriel Marcel, and Mario Benedetti. The Joy of Love has an introduction and nine chapters: Introduction Francis begins by noting a division of opinion during the synods: "The debates carried on in the media, in certain publications and even among the Church's ministers, range from an immoderate desire for total change without sufficient reflection or grounding, to an attitude that would solve everything by applying general rules or deriving undue conclusions from particular theological considerations." He did not propose to resolve those differences by imposing unity: "Unity of teaching and practice is certainly necessary in the Church, but this does not preclude various ways of interpreting some aspects of that teaching or drawing certain consequences from it. This will always be the case as the Spirit guides us towards the entire truth" (paragraph three). He warns the listener that the document addresses many issues in many different ways, and therefore, "I do not recommend a rushed reading of the text." He asks the listener to consider the text "patiently and carefully" (paragraph seven). ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Bill Fike.
